Andy Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Robbie Fowler deserves a special mention in this category. Him, Ostenstadt and Franny Jeffers would surely make up at least 3 of the worst strikers we've ever seen at Ewood.

m1st Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Maceo Rigters was pretty bad Yes, he was; wasn't he? He was one of the few exceptions to the rule that Sparky's signings were gems. One good tournament [European u-21s Championship]; thereafter bobbins. Now still only 28, but playing in Australia. One name I'd like to add from way-back-when is Allan Gilliver, as much for the way he didn't fulfil expectations when we signed him in 1966. Mind you, that may have had something to do with the slipped disc discovered 9 games into his Rovers' career. Apparently Huddersfield Town hadn't disclosed that to Rovers so he may well not have had a [sufficiently thorough?] medical before we signed him. The case went to a League Tribunal; Huddersfield had to repay us £18,000 of the [£30,000?] transfer fee and all transfer deals thereafter had to include a medical examination.
EWOODACE1 Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 I hated andy Kennedy. Kevin Davies Want keen on Stapleton for us either Ward but he always worked harder than any one I've ever seen Fowler Modeste Grabbi
Exiled in Toronto Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 In the early 70's we signed a striker (or centre forward as they were then known) from Brentford called John O'Mara for around £30k. A few weeks before I saw him score a couple of goals against us at Griffin Park and thought how good it would be if we had a player like that. It was like Christmas for me when he joined us and I told all my mates about this 'worldie' we had signed. To be blunt he was crap and only managed a few games before the manager (Furphy I think) put him out of his misery. As a footnote some time later I went with my mates to see a soft porn movie at the Odeon called Three Dimensions of Greta (probably the first 3D film) and Brentford FC was used for some of the scenes. One of the actors mentioned Big John O'Mara in his lines and my mates reminded me of how bad he was again. Just looked it up and O'Mara scored 10 in 35. Maybe it was the expectations thing. I rmember he cost 30,000 which might have been Furphy's biggest purchase
Threepenny Bit Foot Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 David Hargreaves - played at Bloomfield Rd when we lost 5-2 in the late 70s. Missed with a shot from 1 yard out "I was pushed" he said later in The Telegraph!
Exiled in Toronto Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Barry Endean was another who came with a good rep and was useless; still can't believe we swapped Eamonn Rogers for him
Waggy76 Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 There are 3 in my book.... John O'Mara Modeste Paul McKinnon Goodwillie is not far behind ... I remember Bryan Conlan , but he played at centre half for most of time I saw him !
Tyrone Shoelaces Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Yeah there's plenty of crap there alright. Nobody mentioned Bothroyd ! What a tired illegitimate he was. The only thing I remember him doing was kicking that Norwich defender up the arse at Carrow Rd and getting an early bath. Gilliver and Britt could have been top players but came to Ewood carrying serious injuries. Britt had been an England youth international and had absolutely pulverised Tommy Smith in the F A youth cup final but did his knee. Gilliver had been a tremendous prospect at Huddersfield but slipped a disc and had his disc fused. He literally couldn't bend his back, I remember a ball coming over at waist high in front of an empty net right in front of him and he couldn't bend to head it. He just watched it sail past. Any thoughts on John Radford and Norman Bell ?
booth Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Davies Ward Modeste Special mention for awfulness must go to Per Pedersen.
T.J.Newton Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Ill be the 1st to say it then, going of today's display- Edinho. p.s. ok he's only 19 but he offered nothing and didn't seem to have any noticeable attributes(physical or footballing).
thenodrog Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 None of this lot can hold a candle to John O'Mara and Brian Conlon Frank Lord could. Alan Gilliver and Jim Fryatt weren't much cop either. All we could afford at the time. No wonder Ewood crowds shrunk to 6-7000. These youngsters who think the likes of Per Pederson Ward and Blake were bad know sweet FA about whats in store for them. The Dart Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 A man appeared one day, won a league cup medal, hung around for a bit, then went home. Yordi was his name. Maybe not a bad player but that is how you win a medal in style.
Tyrone Shoelaces Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Frank Lord ! I'd forgotten about him. Saw him make his debut at Ewood against Millwall on a freezing cold day. He was the scourge of the old Div 4 that never made the step up. Just one more of the long list of replacements for Fred Pickering, we got £ 85k ( a record transfer at the time between two British clubs ) for Fred but we must have spent twice as much in penny packets trying to replace him.
Mercer Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Barry Endean was another who came with a good rep and was useless; still can't believe we swapped Eamonn Rogers for him Good 'dumper' driver though ! We have seen some real shyte ! Really, really ineffective goes to Curry, Mckinnon & Diawara - Modeste not too far behind. Those four made John O'Mara look decent and that was fecking difficult to do ! Biggest waste of money : Davies, Ward, Grabbi - 20 million down the toilet.
Rover_Shaun Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Sean Curry, Paul McKinnon, Steve Livingston, Ashley Ward, Nathan Blake, Kevin Davies, Corrado Grabbi, David Goodwillie Plenty more
Stonesrick Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 1. Paul McKinnon - signed from a non league club and didn't have enough energy to track back with the cente half for corners 2. John O'Mara - signed for highish fee for us in those days. 3. David Hargreaves - signed from Accy Stanley and never up to the pace. 4. Brian Conlon - didn't look like a footballer/centre forward. 5. Frank Lord - overweight and lacking in every department.
Ianrally Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 I hated andy Kennedy. Kevin Davies Want keen on Stapleton for us either Ward but he always worked harder than any one I've ever seen Fowler Modeste Grabbi Always thought Andy Kennedy was a ponce. I kept expecting him to pull out a comb to re-do his hair. As Tyrone says above, after watching the likes of Fred Pick and Andy McEvoy it certainly concentrated the mind to have to put up with Frank Lord.
jim mk2 Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Blimey, we've had some bad ones..... Worst has to be a toss-up between Frank Lord and Bryan Conlon, probably Conlon because he was downright ugly too. I liked Jim Fryatt, the gait of a Herefordshire farmer but one of the best headers of a ball I've seen. In the modern era, Grabbi and Modeste stand out for their uselessness.
thenodrog Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 I liked Jim Fryatt, the gait of a Herefordshire farmer but one of the best headers of a ball I've seen. Fryatt seemed to win headers from corner kicks with ease but he invariably headed them down to colleagues (who hadn't the gumption to get close to him) rather than toward the goal. Shame really cos he could head it harder than he could kick it.
Colt Seavers Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 I hated andy Kennedy Kennedy scored something like 27 in 52 appearances.

Maybe not a bad player but that is how you win a medal in style. Lol Yordi was pretty good I remember him scoring a bullet header vs Southampton.
Andy Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Yordi bagged a few goals and was a handy big lump up front. Certainly not in the same bracket as the others mentioned in this thread,
