If you are going to use the laptop for gaming then it'll struggle, it would be able to run a game like Football Manager 2012 but not on full settings. You should also look at ebuyer for example this model http://www.ebuyer.com/388471-zoostorm-laptop-7873-9038 is more powerful than the John Lewis one and cheaper, but you won't get the 2 year guarantee.
mac Posted September 5, 2012 Author Posted September 5, 2012 Thanks Kamy, I thought the same but its for the parents and the most it will be used for is booking flights and the 2 year guarantee swung it for them.

Pretty much any new laptop will handle all those tasks (and more) with ease. How about this: http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/toshiba-satellite-c850d-107-15-6-laptop-15119705-pdt.html?srcid=369&xtor=AL-1&cmpid=aff~HotUKDeals~

Biddy Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 I'm looking for a new laptop and have been advised to steer clear of Toshiba. Not sure why. I've got a Toshiba work laptop that I've had for 5 and a half years now (cheap skate company!) and it's still going strong. I'd love to keep it after they get rid of us but it appears they would rather take a zero book value item back and shred it than give them to staff they are getting rid of.
LeChuck Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 I'm looking for a new laptop and have been advised to steer clear of Toshiba. Advised by who Paul? Never had a problem with Toshiba myself.
Paul Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 The guy who supplies our (small) business laptops and PCs which have been faultless for five years. We have HPs at work and aside from HP he suggests Acer or Sony for home use. Says he comes across more problems on Toshiba than any other make.
SouthAussieRover Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 Yup,I'm quite happy with my Toshiba too.
Brfcrule1 Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 mac I have had my dell for 2 years now and have not had any problems so far I have even took part in the brfcs podcast with this laptop and it handled the skype conference call fine the machine I have is the Dell inspiron 15R you can get switchable lids and can confirm the laptop comes with skype already pre-loaded on the machine and mine looks quite nice with the Rovers laptop skin.
CapeTownRover Posted December 2, 2012 Posted December 2, 2012 Asus are doing some nice stuff these days. Im also thinking why the bad rep being given to Toshiba? Imo, they generally float quietly under the radar, but produce solid machines.
Hughesy Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 I'm looking for a new laptop and have been advised to steer clear of Toshiba. Agreed - iv had one and it was rubbish, and got worse over time. My Vaio is on the way out, its lasted around 4 years, which isnt great (I dont think anyway?) - the battery now only lasts 1 hour unplugged, and it keeps getting the odd intermittent fault which happen and then simply never come back. When I took it into the PC shop the other week to get it checked (as it kept switching off), he couldnt find any fault but did said that the Vaio's aint great. Mentioned Asus being very good.
CapeTownRover Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 yeh like i said Chris, Asus are bringing out some good stuff. The Taichi or something like that looks awesome, with its dual screen. Chris, Have you tried just replacing the battery on the Sony Vaio. Think your battery might have taken a hit after 4 years of use. Laptops and pcs normally reach the end after 2 or 3 years anyway, and then the need to upgrade. In fact, you might even have to upgrade after a year, but thats a rare occurance these days.
