I think we are forgetting that venkys do things cheap. so it would not surprise me if they looked at Black first with an assistant. They would see it as they would only need to employ one more person. Bringing in another manger, would mean (in their eyes) havng to pay Black off. Pay for a new manager and assistant and other coaches etc.

Paulo Di Canio is not the manager you want when what you want is a period of stability , i just wished John Williams was making the appointment

Not trying to be an ass but wasn't Ince JW's appointment, just saying, anyone can get it wrong. Maybe Mr Bancroft should still be around he made some inspired managererial appointments I think. Furphy, Lee, Smith, Kendall

Spirited defence of Hill which makes him sound like Jose Mourinho. However according to Wikipedia his record at Barnsley reads:

P58 W17 D11 L30 Points 62 Win %age 29.31

Not at all impressive and hard to see how they haven't been relegated with stats that like although I readily accept you wouldn't necessarily expect a club like Barnsley to be occupying the automatic promotion slots.

Barnsley may have ripped birmingham apart - but I saw them get ripped apart by brighton. Yet birmingham beat brighton yesterday.(which shows you cannot judge a manager just on a few matches) I do not think Hill's overall record is that much better than Kean's. so no to me with regards to Hill.

This would not surprise me , promote within is certainly something they do across many of their business , and I think I read something last year which was a quote from the family of liking to do things like this

You want a fascist sympathiser in charge of Rovers? Good grief.

Well I haven't seen the alleged quote in full and there may be a bit more to it taken in it's full context. Did he actually say something along the lines of "That Mussolini - he was a brilliant bloke." Or was it more along the lines of "In many ways he was a very principled individual. (I just happen to think he was wrong)"

Nevertheless you wouldn't potentially turn down a very successful football manager because of a quote in a book or his political tendancies would you? Or are we saying all the top Clubs who employed Di Canio as a player shouldn't have done that either.?

Good grief.

That wouldn't surprise me one jot. Give the uppity supporters a poke in the eye and do it on the cheap at the same time. Sounds like the Venkies we know to me.

Black would also be a mistake. Check out his record.

An ex rover venkys should consider imo is Simon Grayson. He also knows how to get the best out of Jorden Rhodes.

The thing is the club is on its knees. While i agree that there are no doubt some very astute managers at unfashionable clubs, our situation calls for more than this. We need to find somebody who is proven to be capable with a wealth of experience. But just as important is finding a manager the fans can trust and believe in. Because we need to get as many fans back through the turnstile as possible.

OK the football might be attractive under the likes of Di Canio, but his inexperience would be telling over the season.

All i want at Rovers now is not yet more promise. Another someone with potential. I want to know that the side is being trained all week and managed on a Saturday by a reliable figurehead. We shouldn't be beating Bristol City 5-3. The basis of any good side is being sound defensively and learning when to throw numbers into attack. That isn't to say we should sit and soak up pressure all day, but when you defend well it forces the opposition to loose their shape in frustration. A good coach can teach his players to expose those moments and with our strikers we should pick teams off. There are very few sides who can attack a side from the get-go and take them to pieces. Most solid sides get their noses in front and then wait for the moments to kill the game off. An experienced coach should be able to get this side to do that. Most of the ingredients are there. It just needs somebody to teach the basics and instil some discipline into our game.

Wow!

What a fantastic post

I have watched both of Liverpools last two games v Norwich and Man U, if they continue to play that way, they will be in the mix end of season, brilliant football, great movement, pressure on the ball and organised!!

Thats what we need, Movement off the ball, pressure and organisation, give me a manager with those beliefs and the ability to coach it and we have the ideal candidate!

Perhaps Venkys do things on the cheap but they certainly don't want to lose anymore money.

If they promote Black then they can expect gates 7-8 thousand.

This appointment could either wipe the slate clean or be the final nail in their coffin.

Watched them on MOTD last night and I was very impressed. I know Norwich aren't the best opponents but Liverpool won as they pleased. The movement on and off the ball was great, they had the desire to regain possession as soon as possible. Young players with no fear ran the Norwich team ragged. Our lot need to be shown a video of their performance.

Whilst I fear promotion from within, I think the fact they splashed out the money they did on the likes of Rhodes shows that Venkys might actually have moved away from doing things on the cheap.

We need a manager with experience of getting teams out of this league and the stand out free agent for me at this point is McCarthy. The likes of Curbishley, Souness etc have been out of the game far too long.

Whoever gets the job has to be able to hit the ground running and tighten things up at the back asap. Stability is key right now which is why I would be against a young unproven set up for now.

If they promote Black then we may as well pack it in now. I would be beyond seething.

IMO this is the most likely scenario.

I am so happy that Kean has gone, however he resigned, Venkys didnt get rid of him, there is no sign that they have leanrt from there mistakes yet.

Fully prepared for Black to be given the job full time.

I respectfully disagree Kelbo. In time this is exactly what 99% of fans would want to see. But this takes time as Liverpool have found out. At Swansea Rodgers continued the foundations which Martinez and Sousa had built and Rodgers applied the finishing touches. It's an ethos which is hot at the moment and is being lauded as entertaining and effective. But we need to get up this season and then, if that is achieved we should look to get established back in the PL before attempting to play this way. Because of the necessity to get promoted at the first time of asking i think a more pragmatic approach would suit. I'm not saying Warnock, McCarthy or dare i say Allardyce football. But imagine if we could reproduce the 'Mark Hughes' brand in this division. A strong, fit side who were incredibly hard to break down , kept their shape and when the opportunity arose, hit sides with real quality out wide and up top. We'd walk this division - no question.

Edit,

I should clarify that many of the skills required to play this Liverpool / Rodgers way are similar to the Hughes method. But it takes a long time with the same players, who have the right raw materials, to change their mindset. They need to be taught to take ownership of the ball and in doing so take risks in areas of the pitch where they wouldn't usually. Changing that mindset can take months, years or a lifetime depending on the player. I just can't see it being the quick fix answer we need to get us back up. And make no mistake, we need to get back up!
