I have always rated Newell, but would his problem with agents (even though I think he is 100% correct) be a real problem, perhaps not as a number 2 and he and Shearer were very close as players, similar to Clough and Taylor and that would be a massive help, we then have a link with both club and supporters and two younger ex players who know the game!!

Newell is very shrewd tactically, a friend in Luton says he is the best manager they ever had, got the team together and playing well, the downside came when promoted, players were wanting massive increases through their agents, despite being unproven at the next level, thats when Newell kicked off!!

Field is very limited because the owners won't want to spend money on compensation for a coach or manager employed elsewhere. Cheapest and simplest option is the current assistant manager who will have been given an endorsement by Kean. The next manager of Rovers is Eric Black.

I'm hoping that the fact that the owners backed Singh with Rhodes (apparently), that they will back Singh's ambitions with the manager.

I'm also hoping it's family money and not bank debt being saddled (somehow) on the club!

Family money? I very much doubt it, this is business.

I think when you look at the whole picture - I don't think he is. Under Black a number of fans would return - but he will always be tainted by his association with Kean - and will have to win matches quickly to win fans over. He will offer little in terms of getting potential sponsors back either.

Compare this with the Newell/ Shearer dream team - or even Benitez - gates would increase, as would sponsors. It might cost them more money up front - but is likely to be the more lucrative overall.

I think we are forgetting that venkys do things cheap. so it would not surprise me if they looked at Black first with an assistant. They would see it as they would only need to employ one more person. Bringing in another manger, would mean (in their eyes) havng to pay Black off. Pay for a new manager and assistant and other coaches etc.

Not wrong!! Eric Black with self appointed Shebby is not beyond these toss pots. That would just about nip the euphoria in the bud. But the top thing , despite all the fantasies on here that must be remembered is that IT WILL BE A CHEAP OPTION. I dont think there is any more in the piggy bank with this lot.

then allow yourself to ask ''who in their right minds with any ounce of self respect would want to work at Billy Smarts?''. The thing has become so public half of em wouldnt come because they are scared of the fans-as wrong as that is.I think this has all the hallmarks of a long drawn out mess because nobody here can make a decision and Venkys couldnt make a decision and act on it if their lives depended on it-as we have seen this week.

I think names like Redknapp/Dalglish/ Benitez is very far fetched-sadly the Flitcrofts/Hill's/ are far more likely if only for the fact we can forget about anyone where paying much compensation is involved.

Why would McCarthy have Tugay as his number 2, wasn't aware they knew each other?

why do they have to know each other.

Souness didnt know Parkes before he join the club but appoint him his number 2.

Daglish didnt know Ray Harford but appoint his number 2.

McCarthy would come in as manager and have Tugay his number 2 with MM bring in his own first team coach like Terry Connor.

Why this constant obsession with ex players - just because they used to play for us does not mean they are the best candidates for any job.

Legends as players does not automatically mean they are good coaches/managers. Little or no experience is so risky, we should have learnt that by now.

Think he likes the booze a bit to much, not the best example to set in my opinion.

I agree. Newell did have some success in his managerial career but he also had an equal amount of disasters too.

Shouldn't be touching him with a bargepole, for me.

Big Al on the other hand - a lot seem to be writing him off and judging his tactical acumen based on a handful of games in charge of Newcastle and his work as a MOTD pundit.

Madness.

The man is a living legend and by far the greatest forward ever to grace Ewood Park. What the man has forgotten this week, people like Kean will never know with regards to football.

His professional persona is completely, completely different to his public one and he would start kicking backsides of wasters like Dunn and get players like Hanley and Robbo in good shape.

With an experienced number 2 (Terry McDonald / Derek Faz / Ray Wilkins), Shearer would have every attribute to potentially be a huge success at Rovers.

Failing him, it's certainly worth making a call to people like Rafa and even sounding out people like Guardiola...if Venky's are prepared to pay the right amount of £s...
