The one candidate that would bring mixed emotions more than anyone else would be Shearer.

Being successful with him would be that much sweeter than it would be with anybody else in charge, and he certainly wouldn't be as underwhelming as certain other names mentioned. What's more, his time at Newcastle was both too short and too turbulent to read into his ability to be a decent manager.

All that said, there's no getting away from the fact he's starting from scratch as far as experience goes. Would have much preferred Holloway, but at least he would help bridge the gap between fans and club, and he certainly won't be the Venky's puppet

Would be happy with Shearer to bring the feel good factor back. Almost a total novice though, would have preferred somebody with more experience but I would feel much more comfortable with him in charge than most of the other inexperienced candidates as he would absolutely have the best interests of the club at heart, unlike everybody else in authority there.

Enormously underwhelmed. Whilst any managerial appointment is a risk you minimise risks by appointing someone with a decent track record. Shearer is not that person. I don't get heart over head and I don't do romance or sentiment any shape or form. No thanks

A number of none Rovers sources are telling me that Shearer will be new manager and will be in place before Wednesday.

Would be a surprise but not beyond the realms of possibility.

So IF it is Shearer how would people feel?

I'd feel very very sorry for Shearer tbh. Clearly not 1st choice and almost certainly not 2nd choice either.

I know most people on here have questioned Dowie and Newell as backroom staff, but i'd say, in this scenario, they might well be our saving grace. This club is in desperate need of some discipline and those two would dish it out in the bucket load. Dowie has got Crystal Palace promoted from this division and although i can't say i warm to the bloke, he might offer some advice to Shearer worth taking.

I guess, on the whole, if it is to be Shearer, i'd hope the fickle bunch of fans who want to buy into the sentimental stuff can make their voices heard loud and clear. I don't bu into it, but if the majority do then it might just provide the bounce the club needs. Sadly, i think if Shearer comes in, we'll fall short. By some distance.

if it's as was suggested a couple of weeks ago Newell and Dowie both apparent no nonsense in their approach with players , then I would be fairly happy as some of the little princess's that have been waltzing about the pitch direction less recently will be in for a kick up the backside.

Think Shearer has a point to prove management wise and he must feel that he is ready for the challenge if it does happen.

Hope Newell does the negotiating with agents :)

After all the rumours of ali, singh mckinley would take shearer in a heartbeat best player I have ever seen at ewood legend in my eyes would never boo him or chant his name out, he would galvanize the fans!Obviously it is a massive gamble and hopefully he would bring an experienced backroom team with him but at the end of the day every appointment is a gamble and shearer is a good man so I think if it wasnt working he would walk and just apologise, good move if true

BTW I am not saying this is deffo happening, just something a few people are telling me way. Not able to verify it at present. I would be very surprised if it is him, I just can't Shearer wanting to work with Shebby/Venky's.

Shearer is one of my all time hero's, he would get the fans behind him but not sure if he is the "right" man. As i've said previously for the Championship we need someone experienced and that McCarthy would be the ideal choice.

Professional sport is about heart over head. It's a game after all

Very wise words

He'd be a good 'figurehead' but would need excellent backroom staff with him.

No matter what, I'll get behind them whatever, after the shambles we've endured.

I think this is what the majority of fans will think, although it does feel like an unnecessary risk when there are some decent established managers available(or seemingly willing to take charge).

alan shearer and mick mccarthy on match of the day 2 right now, lets see if they mention anything?

Just my two cents

The presenter said something like "and we've got our big man shearer and marcarthy who's only looking for odd jobs" no doubt I'm looking to far into it but surely that confirms Mick isn't interested in managing but Shearer knows something we don't.

Edit: oooops hadn't read kamys post..ah well shame I didn't post this 20 minutes earlier

Hey, if he did well we could look forward to loosing him to Newcastle all over again!

If you were faced with the prospect of a successful manager, but were likely to lose him after about 3 years, would you take it? Position we're in now I'd snatch your arm off

A laugh? I read his biography and the funniest thing in it was he ate chicken and beans on a match day. So funny i almost sighed!

The situation would be comical though. Venky's desperately need promotion this season, and in an environment where there are more than one pretty sure fire options to achieve this, they go for Big Al.

He has a lot of similar traits to Kenny Dalglish in terms of make-up and philosophy. So, if he does as well as Kenny did in his managerial career, we should be fine.

Dowie will be number 2 and make no mistake, the guy is a very good number 2. Not the 'smoothest' of operators but he knows the game inside out.
