29/9/2011 from Alan Nixon: "Kean wants to bring in close pal, and former Rovers player, Billy McKinlay as his assistant after ex-Arsenal midfielder Jensen’s nine-month stay ended this week"

http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Martin-O-Neill-is-linked-with-Blackburn-as-an-experienced-assistant-to-Steve-Kean-article806190.html

Interestingly the next part of the report says:-

"However the Rovers heirarchy would prefer a senior figure to come in to give Kean some experienced help".

12 months later what the hell just give him the top job.

It's a funny one. I can see why McKinley isn't wanted by some but as I posted last week he is very well regarded at Fulham. I wonder if he could make the step up. He has the advantage of not coming from within the club so his relationship will not be the same as Keans was.

Not for me thanks. If we are going to go for an inexperienced appointment (which I think is a mistake) then there would be others ahead of McKinlay for me. He is tainted and would only continue a lot of the negativity around here that Kean and his gang started.

I disagree and you still are talking rubbish..

1) No-one has been appointed yet. Let's wait and see what happens.

2) There's no evidence McKinlay is Singh's choice.

3) Even if reports of Fulham being approached for McKinlay are true, we've supposedly been rebuffed. Therefore in that respect he'd be no nearer than Sherwood.

4) Andy Neild said it wasn't McKinlay. That said if he's saying it's not Shearer either I'm not sure who he's claiming his "mystery candidate" is.

Believe what makes you comfortable. I hope you're right and i'm absolutely wrong, believe me.

He's Kean's mate. We need to clean house, not replace one over-promoted first team coach with another.

Lest we forget, Kean was a 'highly regarded coach' within the game.....

I said to my lad, if Kean went i would renew our season tickets and I did. If McKinlay is made manager then the whole circus starts again, no experienced manager just another experiment with an untried novice and if this happens I will try and get a refund on the new season tickets cause I can't accept such stupidity again!!!!!

How did it get to this!

The Shebster is seemingly aware of supporters feelings towards Billy, it appears as though he doesn't care though because it is based upon the advice of real 'football people'. That phrase is doing my head in now. When have fans of a club not been 'football people'?

Since when does a football club and it's owners need to consult other people, 'footballing people' because they are not qualified to make a decision themselves?

Such a joke isn't it?

Thing is, whilst I don't hold with the whole romance of Shearer thing, I can at least see the point of trying to make that work. With McKinlay I just don't get it. No managerial experience - coaching experience doesn't count - not a big name, seems to have burnt his bridges with many Rovers fans (though I don't know anything about the stories that surround him) no wow factor, in short nothing to recommend him at all. And then he's Kean's mate. Don't understand who thinks it can be made to work. The guy stands no chance of getting a fair shot at doing the job. Usually new managers come in with a certain amount of good will towards them but McKinlay comes with none. People will be looking for him to fail from day 1 and his first loss will bring so much booing that I just can't see what anyone hopes to gain from it, except certain people who have no interest in Rovers as a football club but want to see us down and out for their own ends and purposes.

Very good post indeed. Completely agree.

The only thing I will say slightly in Mckinlay's defence is that it is completely irrelevant if he is close friends with Kean or not. All that matters is if he's any bloody good or not. Although as you say, because he is, the fans will cut him correspondingly less slack if things start to go wrong.

Comment about Holloway on another Rovers forum -

"I coached part of the Argyle youth set up in Plymouth when Ian was in charge down here. He really set the place alight and no stone was left unturned.

Even the folks in the office had to get rid of the various Man utd, Liverpool, etc coffee cups. Ian said everyone who worked at Argyle had to have Argyle cups to drink from and we all had to believe we could reach the premier league.

Even the youth set up was changed to reflect the style of football he believed in and therefore wanted to produce. After a very short space of time his influence was felt in every corner of the club and it was infectious."

Oliie wasn't that interested in the youth and the youths best days came after Ollie and the guy he had running it stuart Gibson left.

When does the Norwegian league end? I would be prepared to wait for OGS

And so should Rovers be prepared to wait for OGS.

He is exactly what we need and will change everything from top to toe in the right way.

Looks like Bolton have snared Freedman, their number 1 choice.

He would have been fantastic for us.

All done and dusted inside two weeks - that's how you do it !

He's been given permission to talk to Bolton - that's all. Freedman is young and well regarded, but then so was Kean.

And so should Rovers be prepared to wait for OGS.

He is exactly what we need and will change everything from top to toe in the right way.

Solksjaer won't touch us with a bargepole - Sir Alex will have warned him about our wonderful owners.

What a great comment. There really is nothing that appointing McKinlay will bring apart from his inevitable downfall and a huge waste of time and resources, it really does beggar belief. Even if he is great, I don't think he will get the chance to be accepted at all, before he can show it.

Most people linked with the job will no doubt have some who don't believe in their ability, but surely you've got to choose somebody whose popularity with the fans is above 1%.

Fulham have rejected rovers bid to talk to McKinlay unless rovers agree compensation first. This is Fulham's way of making sure that Rovers will offer McKinlay the job if he wants it. Fulham aren't prepared to allow McKinlay to become unsettled if Rovers aren't serious about him being offered the job.

So what's the truth here? Some people suggest McKinlay is just a name on a three man list. Seems to me that if Rovers are granted talks with him, we can be assured that he's the man they want. You also have to wonder who's leaked this info to the press, - I can't imagine it's come from the Fulham end. There's nothing on their official site.

You don't pay compensation merely for talking to someone, you agree a compensation figure in the event of an appointment being made.

Presumably twas ever thus with Sherwood. And we don't seem to be prepared to shell out for him even though he was reportedly our number one choice and we seemed to chase him to the exclusion of all else for nearly 3 weeks.

So any compensation demand for McKinlay might put us off. That's one straw I'm clutching to anyway.
