True Blue & White Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 That's why I said "directly offends". The idea that we all go to heaven does not directly offend anyone. If people chooise to get offended by it then that's their choice, but nobody can be directly offended by because it's not aimed at anyone. Saying disabled people are being punished is directly offensive to disabled people. This really is basic stuff, I don't want to continue being off topic so I'll leave it there. Are gay people not offended by the common religious belief that homosexual activity is an abomination? Go read the Old Testament or the Koran if you wanna see what directly offending someone is, both books' contents make Hoddle's comments look rather politically correct.

I think that's best, getting into religious debates is probably never a good idea. The best thing he could have done if he does have those views is probably to have kept them to himself.

I don't recall any manager coming out and saying homosexual activity is an abomination. Apologies if I've missed a reference there.
True Blue & White Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 I don't recall any manager coming out and saying homosexual activity is an abomination. Apologies if I've missed a reference there. We are comparing beliefs not statements. You said you didn't want Hoddle here because that what he "thinks" not because that's what he said.
Andy Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 I don't recall any manager coming out and saying homosexual activity is an abomination. Apologies if I've missed a reference there. And if one did, they would (quite rightly) be strung up and struggle for future employment. A la Hoddle.
Black Burn Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 I don't recall any manager coming out and saying homosexual activity is an abomination. Apologies if I've missed a reference there. I think True Blue and White is trying to criticize religion as a whole and make a point that it shouldn't matter what religion the manager believes in because his beliefs will in some way or another offend a marginalized group of people, intentionally or unintentionally. Of course, they don't go out and announce their beliefs to public, but that's besides the point. While I see his point, I do confess I have to disagree with him a little. Christians and Muslims are more liberal nowsadays and they don't believe every single word in the Bible or the Quran to the letter. Some Churches allow gay marriages. The Pope himself has said evolution and aliens are possible. Religion while still strong and mostly conversative, does compromise with marginalized people. That said, I will respect the beliefs and religion of whoever the new manager is, be him Muslim, Mormon, Catholic, Christian or Buddhist. Just not Satanist, or he'll have our players drawing pentagrams and slaughtering goats and virigns as sacrifices before matches for our victories.
booth Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 As many ITK'ers have been saying all along we haven't got a manager because Shaw and Shebby can't agree on an appointment. Shebs wants someone young with potential, Shaw wants experience. And Kean me, we are now talking about religion...
deftangel Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 I think what our 'ITK' posters need to bear in mind is to take what they are being told with a pinch of salt. Just because they are being fed a line doesn't automatically mean it's true. Anyone who know's Redknapp or who has followed his career would know there was an infinitesimal chance he would join a championship club north of Watford. Any talking up of this prospect, either by his camp (to put pressure on other clubs) or by Rovers (to reassure supporters we are going for big names) should have been reported with the appropriate disdain. That might seem harsh, especially when we are starved of good news of late but getting up false hopes benefits nobody besides those dishing out the kool aid for their own egos/ends. Nixon doesn't have a 100% record, no journo will have but there's a reason he gets paid money by a National to be right at least some of the time.

LeChuck Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 We are comparing beliefs not statements. You said you didn't want Hoddle here because that what he "thinks" not because that's what he said. Because it's obviously a strong part of what he thinks. Or, at least it was at the time. Why else would he come out and say it? I'm not sure you can make much of a seperation between beliefs and statements...how else do you know what someone believes unless they come out and say it? Most religions have some elements of outdated prejudices. It doesn't mean that everyone in that religion harbours the same prejudices. Until someone explicity comes out and says something, isn't it fair to give them the benefit of the doubt until given a reason otherwise? It was an inexcusable thing to say, and I'm amazed people are defending it.
RoverScot Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 Nixon was being pedantic though by saying Redknapp wasn't being interviewed but then admitted his agent was having the talks. I would do the same if I had an odd story linking Maradona and Zola to the job.
dwayne cage Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 Harry over the phone on SSN on the Blackburn Job " It is a good job for someone, but not a job I am interested in. When the right job arrives I will return to management."
Clitherover Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 Jesus wept! Are you guys really arguing about religion in a Next Manager thread? Cue part 4...

Just not Satanist, or he'll have our players drawing pentagrams and slaughtering goats and virigns as sacrifices before matches for our victories. The problem is it's not that Christians/Muslims have become more liberal over homosexuality, they've just found a way of saying the same thing is a more flowery way. The usual line now is "We hate the sin but love the sinner" which is obviously a cop out when you think about it, they're still saying they hate the very idea of people being actively gay, but you're alright so long as you abstain. I've worked with people who have made this very argument and it doesn't seem to affect their job status, never seen anyone sacked for holding that view either but I find it just as abhorrent as what Hoddle said back then. But let's not forget, Hoddle made those comments over 13 years ago, are we saying that people can't change their opinions or that once you've made admit sake you should never be forgiven no matter how many decades pass?
rovers11 Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 I believe they will appoint tomorrow. Interviews are now over. I'm slightly nervous as to who they pick. Berg seems to fit the bill of what Shebby wants so he's probably favourite. I'd certainly take Hoddle.
braddock Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 150 pages IS a nice round number. And we could do with a new one after the Harry Bombshell and since it's supposed to be 24 hours to the appointment!
RoverScot Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 Preview of tomorrows press conference with Glenn(Pegden and Hoddle possibly) and Shebby

I second this, though the new thread may hit over a hundred in 24 hours the way things are going
davulsukur Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 If the appointment is set to be tomorrow, might as well wait till then and start a new thread for the new guy. (Should it happen)
braddock Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 If the appointment is set to be tomorrow, might as well wait till then and start a new thread for the new guy. (Should it happen) I'm sure he'd get a new thread to himself anyway.
RoverScot Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 Northern Rover @Northern_Rover Hmmm NRK who are Norweigen state media are in town tomorrow and want to interview me about impending managerial announcement. Berg?

Good old Arry eh, gets himself in the spotlight enough for the sky cameras to go to his home, Rovers never, really what he's saying is come on QPR or Southampton I'm bored sack one of your managers and I'll take over. We have been used and abused again.
rovers11 Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 Norweigan press coming over according to Kamy on twitter. Must be Berg or Solksjaer for the managers job. Some seem confident it's solksjaer. Would be happy with that!
sns4ever Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 after all this henning berg is the man very underwhelming however he has my 100% backing he was a good player for us knows how to win just feel this appointment could have been made after 2 weeks
