sorry puffsan, that article means nothing, its a huge step up from working with amateur players in the norwegian league and dealing with multi millionaires in the championship, egil olssen was supposed to be norway's answer to bobby robson but he failed miserable at wimbledon, too big a step up in my opinion, may as well gone for someone from the lower leagues

you cant compare Egil Olsen with Henning Berg. Egil Olsen is a exentric communist who are extremely focused on defensive dicipline and cant even raise his voice. He was set to manage the crazy gang. It was bound to fail. Also calling the norwegian league and players amateurs is a bit uncalled for. The best teams in norway would compete with championship clubs.

I will like to add that i very much doubt he would take this job at any cost. of course its a huge oppotunity for him but he would have set some demands as to freedom on what players and staff to bring in etc.

i dont know if he has been offered any jobs in norway, he has been linked a couple of times in the media but i think he wanted a break and wanted to wait for the right opportunity.

mercerman i have already said im a huge fan of him but i can add it up to one sentence (or two)

he is just what rovers needs now. Stability, organization, common sense, ex history in the club which hopefully can bring the fans together

Horses for courses. I thought Berg was an extremely consistent performer during those heady days. He read the game very very well imo. Maybe thats what Ferguson liked? Anyway, i guess this isn't the Henning Berg appreciation society thread. But for all his points eraned during his playing days (which i clearly value more then others) he has done enough to earn a duration of support from me. But i'll be honest to admit, Berg was well down my personal list of candidates. I can't help feeling this is an opportunity missed.

Totally agree that he was consistent but I think we got very good money for him at the time considering he wasn't the finished article at Rovers. He was immense at times at Man Utd and we got a great player back off them. It sticks in my mind what a fantastic challenge he put in on Sharpe when he wrongly got sent off against the Scum.

*obviously I realise that the challenge was first time at Rovers.

I thought he was a very run-of-the-mill player in our championship side. Ferguson identified his potential and transformed him from a steady and capable right back to an excellent, match saving, centre back. I also think his return on loan (alongside that of Berkovic) were the two missing sparks that fired us onwards during the promotion campaign.

I'd agree with that. Definitely made a difference to the promotion team.

I know nobody is over exited at the news that Berg is going to be manager but most people have done exactly what Shebby planned, accept that it's ok and get behind him, I dont disagree with that and he will have my backing too but ask yourself this if his name was Oleg Barnstrom with the same experience as Berg would you all be so happy to accept him?

If he had'nt played for Rovers would this appointment be a good one? consider names that were being touted around, consider that Harry was interested for the right price and lets not forget that after Kean left Shebby had the chance to totally unite this club fans and players.

Berg will be cheap, no compo settlement, eager to work here so will compromise with backroom staff and so on and probably wont mind young Ali coming in to work with him, Shebby has played a blinder here and done exactly what he set out to do.

One of the most relevant posts all week and you can't be arsed to read it!!

Sheesh!!

It's because it doesn't end with "what a sad state of affairs....blah blah blah".

He already knows about Twitter. It's where he gets his "tips"

Really? I thought it was a coincidence that he often writes "understand that.....(something that has appeared on twitter moments earlier)"

IF it is Berg I will give him a chance, we will all HAVE to.

It's most certainly not the appointment that will get the fans back on side though after having much more suitable names mentioned in the past month.

General feeling on twitter/fb/here suggests there's going to be a lot of unhappy fans should berg get the job.

You mean reduce our fan base even further ? How many stay aways will this appoinment encourage to return ?

Puffsan, many thanks for your thoughts above.

I was not being rude or ignorant about your previous posting which has earned some great reviews. I just prefer brevity which is why my daily paper is the 'I'.

Oh the opinions on here are wide and varied and the doom mongers are more numerous. It beggars belief that some of the posters on here have not made strides to own the club or at least pitch in for the vacant managers role as they are so able to understand and know what the owners are thinking and need to do.

If it is Berg then someone is going to have a massive job to "groom him into being the next Mourinho" and incidentally who (as if we did'nt know) is going to carry out this "grooming".

If it really is Berg I think it could work and he does reportedly have a genuine affection for the club which is a strong motive to succeed, however the interesting thing will be if he brings (or is allowed) his own staff with him.

It does remind me of the gimmick of re-naming the Blackburn End to curry favour with Rovers fans after so much had gone wrong.

Clearly, ability to get Rovers promoted this season has not been the only criterion at work here, and perhaps other criteria have taken precedence.

I'd be interested to see whether Judan Ali does end up on the coaching staff at Ewood, if he does then you'd have to say that that again was a gimmick.

Just a rich man's plaything ...

Judan Ali! The next manager after this? Venkys determined to Indianise a Lancashire town club with a nearly 200 year history. It won't work.

I don't think they will rush back but so long as we win games people will identify that Berg is everything Kean isn't and should steadily return. I personally think Holloway would get the gates up quite sharply thpugh.

I want nothing more than the fans happy on the terraces and supporting the team. I'd like to think that whoever is in charge (so long as there is genuine reason for their appointment) will be given a clean slate and we can reboot this once-respected and great club.

As a footnote, I have an awful feeling Hughes will be sacked this weekend and we will end up ranting about Venkys not holding on another week!

I'm pretty sure it was Sharpe but Cantona probably took the penalty. He also set up Shearer at Old Trafford for what should have been a goal (with a tampon rammed up his conk!)

Crikey. my memory is shot!

Mine is getting like that, it's all this Venky overload.

no problems man.

I don't think Henning has any backroom staff ready to bring in. based on what he has said in different media articles and interviews i think he would want people who shares the same football philosophy as him. if he decides the current people in the club doesnt work well with him i think he will replace them. also based on many inteviews he has done in different newspapers he would want to change how the club is run to post venkys era, and bring the good old principles back that made us a successful club for over a decade

Don't understand this obsession with Hughes. Did great for us, found City difficult, did okay at Fulham after inheriting a decent team and is making a dog's breakfast of it at QPR !

His career is in a downward spiral, yesterday's man, like Big Mick !
