[Archived] New Manager Part 3

Simple fact is that the only chance we have of promotion is for the next appointment to be a success.

Another fact (unless numerous posters and those who have chosen to stay away from Ewood are liars, and I don't think they are) is that the overwhelming majority of fans would have taken near enough anyone in preference to Kean.

Some are obviously going to be more impressed than others about the prospect of Berg as our manager, and everyone has every right to question what has clearly been a shambolic recruitment process. Nevertheless, I'd wager pretty much everyone sees him as a marked step up from the last two years, and given the importance of us going up sooner rather than later, it's vital that we give the new manager 100% support.

Gerald bloody Ashby... I remember that even though I was only about 10 years old...

Never heard it so hostile either... on a par with the Dingles now - both towards the United players at the start and then him for 'that' decision.

Remember the chant to other ref's for about 2 years after, following a bad decision? "You're worse than Gerald Ashby!"

I'm pretty sure it was Sharpe but Cantona probably took the penalty. He also set up Shearer at Old Trafford for what should have been a goal (with a tampon rammed up his conk!)

Mine is getting like that, it's all this Venky overload.

It was Lee Sharpe he tackled, won the ball too. Never a penalty. Was sat in the bottom of Blackburn End gutted. All refs are Man Utd fans.

Anybody who saw Keith Newton will tell you he had it all, pace, class, elegance on the ball, tackling ability, heading ability, two good feet, the ability to play on either flank without a problem, he could attack and defend, he had a great temperament, you name it - he had it. Held the right back position in the best England team I've ever seen as well as playing right back, left back, centre half , and centre midfield for Rovers. A true Rovers great and all the kean we enduring now can't and won't erase his achievements.

Smashing tribute to my all-time favourite Rovers player. A class act who would be worth a king's ransom these days.

I notice Berg has been earning a living as a TV pundit since he was sacked by Lillestroem. Perhaps his fellow pundit Shebby feels sorry for him.

Start of second half in front of the Blackburn End. Martin Tyler commentating, 'It's bedlam behind the goal'

Then Hendry scored. Great memories, even though we lost the game!

I liked Berg as a player as well, he was a fine footballer with a good mental attitude. If I'm being picky he lacked a bit of pace to be a really top full back but he had the savvy to disguise it. I've also not forgotten that he was on his toes as soon as he possible when the red rats came calling, he wasn't the only rat to leave the sinking ship though.

Played two games with Keith in the B team, he was a centre half then, I got the dreaded, 'dont call us we'll call you' message but it was tough as the lads coming through were England, Pickering, Newton etc, a number of years later, Keith and I worked together along with Ian Lawther, another ex Rover, we shared fags and memories together, yes Keith was a great player, great lad and is deeply missed!!

dont think anyone in sane mind could be impressed wiith berg appointment gally

To be fair hardly anyone knows enough about him to make that call, you could reduce Andre Villas Boas to a complete failure at Chelsea (and plenty don't rate him) but there are other reasons why that particular spell didn't work for him.

Two main points still stand.

1) 5 weeks ago, the prospect of swapping Kean with Berg would be met with mass approval

2) If we are to go up, it will be under the next manager, so it's vital he gets our full support from the off

My GUESS is that shortlist is down to 2 (Berg and another manager), this has been submitted been submitted to Pune with recommendations and that the owners will rubber stamp one of them.

Whoever is appointed I just hope that everyone gets behind the new manager and gives him a chance.

Logically (I know it is dangerous to apply logic with these clowns) the other manager has got to be Ian Holloway. Maybe Shaw & Shebby can't agree on who the number one choice is, therefore both have been submitted to Pune for them to choose, but then again surely Holloway won't want to work with Shebby knowing that he doesn't want him.

I'd describe myself as intrigued rather than over the moon at Berg's potential appointment.

I've always considered Berg to be an intelligent and studious sort of guy so I can't see any reason why it shouldn't work if he's allowed to get on with it and he must be allowed to appoint his own backroom staff. No keeping Black on or hangers on from the Kean regime.

Neither does Berg suffer fools gladly as we saw from his famous touchline row with Souness when the latter had got his tactics badly wrong. So it could work.

Could have been better, could have been a lot worse. And has the huge advantage of being neither Kean nor Black. It would do for me.

If the situation was Holloway in and Shebby out or Berg in and Shebby stays then I think most would prefer the former

SkyBet is only UK market open at this time and Berg is now 4/11.

And how many people have been odds on for the job so far? I think I was at one point!

There is a power struggle and the managerial appointment will back that up. Rookie, Shebby wins. Experience, Shaw wins. I never thought I'd want him to but I hope Shaw wins.

Surely, it has been ascertained behind the scenes that Holloway would come if asked whether Shebby is there or not.

I know we're a bit thick but surely we wouldn't want to be in be in a position whereby our final short list of two is sent off for approval to Pune, they give Holloway the royal seal of approval, then he turns us down!

I keep going back to what I thought earlier today though. We haven't even bothered asking Blackpool for permission to formallly approach Holloway so normally that would indicate to me he's behind the people who have been interviewed in the pecking order.

Unless of course that lone Blackpool poster is correct in saying he's handed in his resignation tonight which would solve that one!

Not sure it works that way, otherwise no one would ever pay compensation, they'd just get their prospective manager to resign his post and hence avoid the whole issue.

Compensation would still be payable, it makes no difference whatsoever in that respect. The figure would either be agreed between the Clubs or settled by a Court in the absence of any agreement.

In this instance it would just save the rigmarole of us having to formally approach Blackpool then Oyston turning us down if he decides to be awkward etc etc.............

Don't be so lazy and rude. It takes about 2 minutes to read it.

Absolutely right Le Chuck......Puffsan has gone to a great deal of trouble that he was not obliged in any way to do, so the least people ought to do is either read it, or if they feel they can't be bothered then don't read it. But either way don't criticise it's author who was just trying his best to give us a decent overview of HB's managerial career in Norway.

Just got home from a long day at work and have not began to scroll through todays stuff. First thing I see is Henning Berg, well excuse me but I am sorely underwhelmed.

Now I will trawl through the pages hoping to find something to tell me it's not true.

If you had actually read Cryer's tweets, you would have clearly seen that he referred to "Redknapp's camp" meeting with Rovers today, never Redknapp himself.

........................I believe we should have paid for Redknapp. His history and record is amazing. We certainly would have maximized changes of promotion as compared to past (Kean) and current (Black) management. And its not hard to guess what he wanted:

1. A large base salary (2 million?).

2. A large promotion bonus (2 million?).

3. Guaranteed transfer funds in January (10 million?).

4. No player sales without his approval.

5. No player buys without his approval.

6. No interference or limitations in team selection.

7. No interference in tactics.

8. The right to leave with little or no compensation if a better job came along.

Cryer said in this morning's LT that Rednapp himself was due to speak with the Club. Not his representatives.

I agree with you that we should have broken the Bank to get Harry until we reach point number 8 above. He would absolutely have had to agree to see out the season. There's no way we could have risked him doing one in January as soon as the jobs at QPR/Southampton/Norwich/Villa or wherever became vacant.

Someone also quoted a piece above indicating that Paul Stretford is Harry's agent. That in itself could also have been a problem. Very nasty piece of work indeed imo. Makes JA and his ilk look like Mary Poppins.
