[Archived] Henning Berg - Rovers Manager

If we had Gomes or Best up top with Rhodes, natural wingers with a bit of pace on each flank (ie. Martin Olsson on the left, Vuckevic on the right?) and a midfield destroyer in the Batty / Flitcroft mold, who can win a tackle alongside EITHER Murphy/ Etuhu / Dunn (could Lowe fulfil that role, or maybe bring someone like Raheem Hanley from the reserves?) we would destroy most "lesser" teams in this league and would give us a fighting chance against the better teams. Unfortunately, I don't see a place in that formation for a Rochina or a Formica and would get rid in January to maybe fund getting the midfield destroyer we so desperately need.

Berg will get Rovers up. still 26 games to go

I'm afraid I can't see anything to suggest this will happen.

Last season automatic promotion required 88 points and 75 to reach 6th place. Starting tomorrow we need to average 2.3 points per match for promotion and 1.8 for sixth.

Automatic promotion 2.3 points / game

Play offs 1.8 points / game

Season to date 1.47 points / game

Henning to date 1 point / game

Scarily Cardiff and Palace need 49 and 48 points from the rest of their games (26) for automatic promotion - that's 1.8 per match. The teams in 3rd to 7th are averaging at least 1.6 per game.

If we lose our next two games, very likely in my view, we will need to average 2.5 points for promotion or 1.9 for 6th.

Usually I'm not one for statistics, win at home, draw away is my yardstick, but reality is the table AND recent performances don't lie. We need a significant turn round in results, attitude and application to go up this year. There isn't a player I've seen in the team recently who appears to match those needs except for the Birmingham game when I thought we were very good.

Fail to beat Burnley and Cardiff and the game is up for this season. Today has disaster written all over it, cold, poor pitch, hostile atmosphere, few players, if any, who understand. Our lot will bottle it.

It is the players attitude or lack of it , that sends out out the wrong vibes to the fans ...

Main ,ones being Murphy ,Etuhu ,Richards they don't appear to give a poo ..

Berg has inherited a large squad of mainly very sub standard players , to have any chance of success he has to show some the door ....

Not easy with contracts etc ,,,We are led to believe Etuhu is on a 4 yr deal if that is true it is CRIMINAL ..

The Portugese players we never see , if they cannot get in this team , I suspect they never will ...

Today has the previous poster says as disaster written all over it !!

I was amazed Berg got the job , but I will support him until this time next season , when he should have his own men in ...

I have a gut feeling , he may just walk away if results continue much sooner....

Why do they 'have' to go on a bad run chaddy, and why do we 'have' to go on a good one. There is nothing suggesting that either must happen.

The only solace I can take is that we were in a similar position last time we went up. We were 9th when we met the Dingles at a similar time of the season. However I'd take nearly every one of those players over our current squad.

Today is the type of fixture that can change things though. This is a big game, there is no getting away from that.

Not that I'm agreeing with Chaddy but football is s funny old game Ricky. If it were so easy to predict bookies would be out of business.

It's a tough ask but we do have a chance of the play-offs.

Keep the faith.

and although we were 9th in December 2000 we were on the rise and looking good.

Then there's the small matter of the people running the club then compared to now.

We certainly were not! We had a pretty poor run of form going into the game.

Reading this message board reminds me of how overly negative some of you are. Yes, we've had two dreadful years under Kean, but that's no excuse to carry on dulling down everything that Rovers are trying to do to get out of this situation.

I don't agree. I thought we'd turned the corner a few weeks before the 2000 away game. We'd played Fulham away just before the dingles and played really really well. We were desperately unlucky to lose 2-1. I felt our season started with that game.

That season, we'd won 7, drawn 3, and lost 1 of our previous 11 games (24 points).

From our last 11 this season we have won 3, drawn 4, and lost 4 of our previous 11 (13 points).

Granted, we weren't in the peak of our good run when we played Burnley, but drawing any comparisons are futile. This is a worse team, with a worse manager, at a worse time, at a worse club.

not what Souness said in the LT on friday

We'd dropped to 15th after the 2-1 defeat to Fulham in October. I'd call the six consecutive victories after falling to our lowest position in the table all season "turning the corner."

Talk about 'cutting where convenient.'

When we don't win promotion (nothing suggests we will even make the play-offs) do people think Berg will be here next season?

Depends imo on the progress the team has made. Like Hughes Berg has been left a poor squad. Watch this and then tell me how many of Bergs squad would have even got on the bench of this promotion team? Ternent admitted it was Ferrari's v Mini's. Rem Souness even added Berkovitz in the New Year.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRKdtm6LjSs

The quality in our squad turned Ternents team into a bunch of thugs. Ball on Dunn was a bad challenge but Paytons on Friedel was even worse and more cowardly imo . btw that was the only time in his entire career that I have seen Duff react like that.

Ternent commented whilst at Burnley and to try and silence their boo boys "Burnley fans have champagne taste but beer money"...... Not the only ones are they?

Berg can sod off as far as I'm concerned. God knows why he's still leaving out Givet and Simon.

Either he's letting the powers that be pick the team for him and he's just another stooge, or else he's just as clueless as the last incumbent.

Whichever of those two reasons apply, I have very little time for him as manager of our club.
