[Archived] Henning Berg - Rovers Manager

King impressed in his first game but not the one after.....Vukcevic impressed against B'ham but not today.

These things happen and prove nothing.....nobody can predict the future....so there's no need to be condescending.

Quite right.......... So best for some people not to even try then I would suggest, and especially in the manner Sydney Rover employed.

I think he has the contacts but will he have the finances to get them in, as for the backroom staff, I am struggling to understand this and think we may see changes quite soon!!

I think you are in the same boat as many fans !

You do begin to wonder if it's the cost that is the real factor. Speculation was that Berg would be allowed to bring in just one of his own men and, IMO, the club has been down a few rabbit holes with that one !

Going back to the future in the hope that a freeloader like Pedersen can improve your fortunes is a recipe for certain disaster,

Harsh that. Just as an aside which of the squad would you NOT describe as a freeloader Simon? You are worse than Shebby for picking on MGP when imo there are far more deserving cases for the title of 'freeloader'.

I'm really disappointed in all the criticism and moaning from a substantial number of people on this board. When Kean was here there were genuine grounds for that and the club was brought to the edge of a very deep hole. Venkys unfortunately are still here but we have to live with that. We now have a new manager who is the exact opposite of the last joker. He appears to be honest and have the best interests of the fans and club at heart. Not even the special one could turn our club into a successful outfit in a month and yet we have fans on here calling for his head already and telling us in as many words that Kean's results are better than Berg's. The results at the beginning of this season were a flash in the pan and every season we've seen how teams who have started well have not often finished well. Are there people on here who really thought we'd have stayed up near the top of the table with Kean in charge all season. Dream on.

If Henning Berg turns out to be a poor manager by the end of the season then fair enough let's look for a new manager but surely it's too soon to be wanting a change at this stage. For god's sake get behind the manager, the team and the club.

Easily the best post on this whole thread, well said sir.

Who's the box to box midfielder? Honestly.

The one playing very well for Stoke.

If they don't want to pay up and decide to sell, I'm OK with that too!

Me too.... but have you considered who will buy? It took the trust 3 years and a knock down price to get rid... and we were a top half financially sound Prem club back then.

Vukcevic.

He can pretty much play across midfield. Decent passer, likes to arrive late in the box, takes people on. Stick him with someone like Lowe in the centre and we might actually create something.

I'm suprised you can say that given the amount of time we have seen him on the pitch. imo there is something wrong there.

PLease do elaborate.

Hardly any need is there? Arry would rather have stuck pins in his eyes every day than manage us. We were just a rather lame stalking horse for his ambitions.

Can't believe people are calling for Berg to be sacked. He hasn't had a great start but I can't stress enough that he took over a team who had just had 2 years of Steve Kean. He is changing the style of the team, trying to get the balance right, and trying to get the fitness up to scratch.

The biggest problem at the moment is that Rovers have a lack of players who can get stuck in. The amount of time teams are able to get a shot off on our goal without being closed down is scary. When we are under the cosh, we don't have enough defensively minded players to be able to cope with a sustained amount of pressure. That is why we have conceded so many late goals. This will be addressed by Berg in January and the return of Best will enable us to build attacks more effectively with his hold up play.

We are not that far off from being a good team.

Theno, you ask who would buy us. The 2 Ians are still interested I assume and the Trust can win part-ownership. That's one possibility I'm aware of, there might be others I'm not.

One thing I do know is that BRFC will continue to exist in one form or another. Somebody will, the current owners will take something rather than continue the huge losses and have worse than nothing.

Allot of people are overlooking a managers prefered formation, to me it was the biggest flaw in going for Berg in the first place (not a flaw of Bergs style or ability.. as all managers have prefered formations/styles of play) as simply put we did/do not have the players in the positions to play a 442 formation with out and out wingers (which has been stated as Bergs prefered style according to our Norweigan contingent and his previous clubs)...

I really can't see how Berg can turn things around given what we have at our disposal other than to make some radical changes and play well out of his 442 comfort zone and maybe hope to bring in the players we need in Jan.

As for people quoting Keans start to this season.. for me that is extremely unfair, most teams would of been scared to death by seeing the likes of Gomes, Rhodes, Murphy and a host of other internationals and we certainly started to see the results turn just prior to Kean leaving.

While the start hasn’t been good, personally I think that it is way too early to judge Henning.

However, I suspect that internally he might come under pressure as he has been told that the requirement this season is to get up, especially if results against Cardiff and Blackpool go against us, both of whom I expect to be in the top 6 come the end of the season.

From what I have gathered, the players are impressed by Henning, he has got them doing different type of training and they can see what he wants to achieve, they are being given different patterns of play and the way he wants them to play in very different to what they have been used to. That kinda thing takes time to implement, maybe he should have taken a more pragmatic approach and gradually changed the style of play etc? But a lot of work is being done at Brockhall at the moment however whatever work is being done on the training ground isn’t yet yielding points. I also wonder if Henning needs to freshen up his coaching staff, too many staff from Kean era are still there, maybe new staff who are familiar with his philosophy might help take things forward.

So in a nutshell, for me too early to judge. But I suspect that if results don’t improve over the next 2/3 games then he might come under pressure internally due to the goal of getting promoted this season which he has been given.

Maybe those pressurising him, would show him how to do it?

Having said that Kamy, I reckon he was impressive at his interview simply because he told Shebby that he could get us up. That's all that Shebby wanted to hear and that's what he heard. Interview over.

From my perspective, Henning Berg is something we've lacked the first couple of years- a proper manager. It takes time to repair the damage. While I know the pressure is on, we need to give him that time.

Having said that, part of the repair (and which may save us some small amount of time) is Berg getting his own backroom staff in. What is the hold up? Why is a coach or three posing a problem?

I think the players have to stand up and take some of the blame. 99% of people on here wanted Pedersen back in the team ahead of King, yet Ped was useless and we only got playing as a team when he was replaced by King, who looked really good (first time i'd seen him).

As someone else has said, we're not far off a decent side (for this league), I think that when Dunn and Gomes are back that will give us more options in supporting Rhodes.

Still worried about Murphy though. He was nowhere in the first half. Bringing Lowe in was a good move, he got around everywhere yesterday in the second half.

The defense looked good yesterday too, they had to be on their game in the first half. I will give credit where its due to Scott Dann for his headers and blocks.

Can someone point out the people in this thread who have called for Berg to be sacked?

I really don't think a manager who has had a mediocre/poor record in the Norweigan League and who has presided over such a poor start is likely to lead us to promotion. I without doubt would say given what was on the table, he was the wrong choice as manager.

However now he's here, I would never say we should think about getting rid after seven games.

Indeed, I haven't rated him since his arrival (though haven't slagged him off) but he appears to have transformed recently. Happen its with the amount of defensive class in the backroom staff.

Who said he was?

And I know you have a hatred for anything that comes out of Brockhall, but who would you propose partners Simon?

Murphy? Etuhu?

Jason Lowe is certainly no Simon Barker. As for the three you mention, transfer them and get some new more capable players in.

At this moment in time we have no engine room for the team to build any kind of success on.

Never thought of that.

Now for the small matter of shifting Murphy & Etuhu from their bloated contracts.

And, of course, Venky's funding the purchase of the "next Simon Barker".

Anymore enlightened suggestions, JAL?
