moerpho Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 I know I keep going on about this but unless we can transform someone in the current squad to be a warrior/leader etc we won't even make the play-offs no matter who is manager. This squad along with Bolton and Wolves have gotten used to losing over the past two seasons and it's showing, but Wolves have (despicable) Henry and Bolton have Davies to grab them by the neck and demand they push on in games where they are behind. We have none! Hopefully we will get someone in that mould in in january but by then it might be too late for a promotion push. Been looking around to see who might fit the bill and available but noone comes to mind - central midfielder/center back, experienced, loudmouth and on-field leader...someone the rest of the squad will listen to and be "afraid" of. Any suggestions?

Mercer Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Let me clarify re Nzonzi. In no way was I classifying him as a 'great'. What I meant was that in the PL, when his head was right, he was a very. very capable performer. Under Sam, he was attracting attention from far and wide but, unfortunately, IMO, under Kean, he sadly lost his way and his development stopped and his career in the last few months stuttered and stalled completely owing to Kean. Potentially, he was a £10million player as he had everything and on his day was awesome. I don't think Etuhu is fit to lace his boots. IMO, Zonz is one of those players driven out by the clown Kean. IMO, Venky's and Kean have an awful lot to answer for.
forumquizmaster Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Under Sam, he was attracting attention from far and wide but, unfortunately, IMO a stroppy so-and-so, under Kean, he sadly lost his way and his development stopped and his career in the last few months stuttered and stalled completely owing to Kean was also a stroppy so-and-so. IMO, Zonz is one of those players driven out by the clown Kean the epitome of why people are being turned off top flight football. Corrected for you. In no way a dig at you Mercerman and I'm far from a Kean apologist but Sam also had issues with N'Zonzi. I have no doubt he'll throw his toys out of the pram at Stoke when things don't go his way as well. What he did at Swansea was unforgivable, and I'm glad he will never again pull on the blue and white halves.
Gav Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 'average at best'. Time will tell Gav. However the fact remains that whilst 'great' is ludicrous in the Prem compared to Etohu and Murphy in this league 'great' is no exaggeration. He'd absolutely boss other midfields in this league? The biter bit being that by all accounts he was driven out by Kean for whom the writing was on the wall. Through their own crass stupidity and stubbornness the Venky's are learning the hard way. Absolutely Lets hope Berg can find a decent midfield player come January.
Exiled in Toronto Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 At what point does Berg run out of excuses? About 4 weeks ago it seems
DavidMailsTightPerm Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 And the last manager, and the one before that... But "it's all Berg's fault" is the usual whiney crap coming from the likes of yourself at the moment. Give Hughes/ Allardyce/ even Souness a player like Murphy at this level and guaranteed they would get the best from him. Berg has started very badly. Get over it. You need to wind your neck in - I am firmly in the "give him time, too early to judge" camp. Can't think of anything I have said that would make anyone think otherwise.
majorstyre Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Berg needs time... everybody has seen the mess that the club was under when Keanscum was in charge!! Unfit & generally dead on their feet after 70 minutes of the game; tactically inept; unable to defend; no creativity; - - need i go on.... to get that mindset away from the players, takes time - a lot of time... it takes a lot of time to get rid of two years mentality.... we have seen Berg come in, try to change tacticts football is more enjoyable to watch now... the real problem with Bergs appointment was timing!!....it should have happened in the summer; it should most certainly happened far quicker than the 6 weeks it took following the removal of keanscum... this is what will cost us promotion this season... TBH, at best, i can see us only hitting a play off berth....in the long run, promotion this season could be a bad thng, as i think as a unit, we may still be underprepared next season ans end up being hammered week in/week out next season, at this level will see us as a far more efficient unit!!, and better prepared for the eventual promotion.... however club finances and lack of promotion may be the key killer.... as for those saying McCarthy has a better record, TBH he has not set the world alight at ispwich 6-0 & 5-0 hammerings???.... if that had happened here, what would the "fans" be saying?????
rossyrover Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Henning Berg needs time to sort out this teams defence and midfield we have to many weak fancydan players for this division we need players who are stronger and much fitter who can also play much quicker and we must find a better pattern of play that plays to Jordan Rhodes strengths not long high balls.
Stuart Ripley Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 He was average at best, showed glimpses of class, and moaned more than he performed of the pitch IMO. Zonzi and great shouldn't be used in the same sentance mercer. We got 3m for him didn't we? not bad business in my book. not bad business and venkys shouldn't be in the same sentence. not saying you did like
Batman. Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Henning Berg needs time to sort out this teams defence and midfield Took Eric Black one week.
CapeTownRover Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 all Berg needs, is to go find out if Jermaine Jones is still available. Midfield general sorted.
Salgado Is A Hero Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 all Berg needs, is to go find out if Jermaine Jones is still available. Midfield general sorted. I'd imagine he prefers the Champions League and being 4th in the Bundesliga.

From what ive seen so far, long balls neither apply to Jordan Rhodes game. He is what it says on the tin, a finisher, nothing more, nothing less. Jordan is our icing on the cake though the cake is far from complete nor good enough to stomach, thus the empty seats youll see in every game we play in.
Darmond Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 People took to Speedie, Savage and Diouff soon enough, all players who were detested when associated with previous clubs. I didn't take to Diouf even when he played for us. Never really got past the Bolton penalty dive.
Athlete Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 we all know Berg needs time and results haven't been great to say the least but has Berg got time ? we all know he was given a 3 year contract but in football those sometimes aren't worth the paper they're wrote on...will Venkys back him in the window with cash if so with whose cash ? will any clubs take our high earning non performing dross off us ? that's doubtfull... Reading the accounts thread it almost certain looks like promotion is an absolute must financially for the club or we are in trouble unless Venkys chuck some cash in too prop the club up ? are they preperared to do that...only time will tell I like Berg and want him to succeed been a great servant for the club but I get the feeling it may be the wrong job at the wrong time with the wrong owners unless somehow he can get this side on a decent run.....
broadsword Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Knowing Venky's, they will give him some money to spend in January, then sack him in February.
riverside returns Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Berg's first job was to stop the side leaking goals and instill defending onto the defence. He has done that and as was shown by the ommission of Etuhu at Burnley, the next job was to put in place a midfield that acts as first line defence. This is where the goals have come from. Space given to opposition who have noted our keepers achilles heal, shots from distance. The next job is to give the defence an out ball to the wing. King coming on at Burnley gave us the out ball on the left and this allowed more space on the right. Hopefully, this will lead to more progress down the wings and to more crosses and chances for Rhodes who is just waiting for the ball.
broadsword Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Berg's first job was to stop the side leaking goals and instill defending onto the defence. He has done that How many clean sheets do we have under Berg then?
riverside returns Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 The point Bryan was to show that it takes time to identify the problem and then more time to fix it properly. I would suggest this is why the defence has not been changed since Berg came in. The defence did magnificently on Sunday but first half, the midfield was shocking. Second half, there was massive improvement in the movement from midfield and demonstrated the old maxim that the best form of defence is attack.
jim mk2 Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Berg's first job was to stop the side leaking goals and instill defending onto the defence. He has done that Really ? Some of the defending has been as bad as under Kean. Black's short time in charge saw the defence tighten up considerably but Berg has made no difference as far as I can see.

Jordan is our icing on the cake though the cake is far from complete nor good enough to stomach, thus the empty seats youll see in every game we play in. After nearly 30 years of habitual attendance I stopped going this season because of Kean and the dross the collection of surrender monkey players were serving up. I also found that I didn't miss it as much as I thought I would and I enjoyed my Saturday afternoons 'on the fells' Since Kean has gone and I returned again nowt much has changed on the playing side. I miss the next 3 home games so will my mojo be big enough to bother purchasing a ticket for the home game in mid-january? The performances recently suggest it's unlikely if my head rules, but then that's when the heart rules the head. One thing I am certain of is that our league position will not be any better and the top clubs will be that much further on the horizon :-(
