Goalkeepers generally don't make great coaches or managers, in fact I cannot think of one who has been successful.

For some to suggest that Friedel should replace Robinson as first-choice goalkeeper is ludicrous.

Peter Taylor as Cloughie's no2 did ok !

I'm torn on it

It's not exactly a priority but I've never really rated Robinson despite him seeming to care, I would have rather shifted him out in summer and kept Bunn on possibly

Never heard of goalkeeping coaches, Jim?

.

I knew there'd be one.

The reference was obviously to first-team coaches or managers.

Don't agree about Friedel now. He resembles a statue at times now and has lost mobility and agility.

Astonishing. You make it sound like Samba was just a big lump who spent the game leaping up heading the ball away, and never had any other real use. I therefore have to question if you really paid any attention to his game. There are certain fans who never seem to watch defenders, and just generally don't get what defending is about. Having spent most of my time playing defence, I keep a sharp eye on them personally. Samba was excellent. He was strong, fast, courageous, great in the tackle, highly consistent, and quite cultured for a centre half. He could also score a fair few. Occasionally his position was suspect (I assume that's what you mean by 'positionally when being moved about'), but no more so than most centre halves. And this was more than compensated for overall by his other attributes and the fact he could dominate space. His main failing was that if he had to fully turn around and accelerate quickly, he could be a little slow to do so (bit understandable when you're six foot five). Once he got a head of steam on him though he was pretty quick. We sorely missed him and still do. To call him 'only average' makes me seriously question if you know anything about defending.

Excellent comment. He gave us great service, cost next to nothing and was one of the most solid centre halves in the premier league. His sheer presence lifted the team I felt and he certainly led by example. He was also a handy threat from set pieces and had "good feet for a big man" :)

Friedel ?

Has to be a joke. The guy is 40+, past his best and would be a very expensive addition to an astronomical wage bill.

We also happen to have Robbo and goalkeeper is not exactly where we need strengthening.

IMO, this is absolute nonsense.

Night as well give Bryan Douglas the opportunity to come back.

People have been writing Brad off as too old for years. Meanwhile he keeps himself as fit as he can and continues to prepare fastidiously for every game. Has played as well as ever for Spurs and its only the pressure put on by the new guy that's seen his manager capitulate.

In any case I see him as a long-term coach and inspirational figure. Just to have decent leaders around Ewood is like a breath of fresh air after the last 2 years.

I think it would be good to get Brad back and if he was at any other club I think we could get him. Unfortunately he is at spurs which means the chances of getting him are zero.

As for Robbo, most of the time I think he does just enough. His best season was when we finished 10th under Sam but since then I think he has been below his best and I still think Brad is the better keeper.

Great news, doesnt mean the end for Robbo just competition plus a great coach and motivator.

Yes it does cos we'd never be able to afford the pair of them and I'd imagine Robbo is on more money than his abilities deserve and signing Friedel would represent a saving.

Makes sense too as Robinson is the best and most accurate kicker of a ball in goalkeeping imo and Big Sam will want him to supply Carroll with the type of service which his strengths and abilities require.

Who knows cos anyway it might be Allardyce rather than Berg that has initiated this and I bet few of the above posters have even considered that.

Not really, something has to give in the Spurs goalkeeping situation, and Lloris is going to be the only winner in that battle. They still have Cudicini and Gomes in reserve.

I respect your opinion sally but I simply don't agree with your classification of Samba. At a push and all things considered IMO he was average +. Yes he had some great days and performances but he is nowhere near that second bracket of players, he is also not as good as King. He was fantastic at heading balls away from certain areas but positionally (when being moved about) he had big flaws. He excelled when we were camped in our own box because he had a good standing jump on him and this was often how we would defend - it suited him well.

Who knows? We hardly ever saw King play!

imo The problem you have with Samba is that he moved somewhat awkwardly and some people place style before effectiveness... think Crouch here.

At his age now, I'd be surprised if he HADN'T lost mobility and agility. And yet he'd still be an improvement over Robbo.

Brad would be a great piece of business. He is a better keeper now than Robbo has ever been. He is in MUCH better physical condition and I would still put him in the top 10 keepers in the country. The 'feel good' factor for the fans would also be well serviced IF this could be pulled off. He must have at least 2 seasons left in him at our level.

If it was that obvious the remark wouldn't have to be made, would it? And Nigel Adkins has done alright. Not so much this season but for several seasons past. How many outfield players go into management and never make it in the top leagues? LOADS. I don't think position really matters. It's motivation, tactics and man-management. Although keepers seem to be loners on the field, so maybe that plays a part IF there's a discernable difference?

Would it also spell the end of Mimms' time here? So even further saving (IF he's gunna be a goalie coach too).

Mervyn Day did well too as an assistant boss, Don McKay, Mike Walker did ok as managers, Dino Zoff and I think Nigel Adkins was a keeper too! -
