[Archived] Henning Berg - Rovers Manager

There is something else to consider. Why would Spurs, weaken their goalkeeping situation to be charitable to us. They have two top goalies vying for the no 1 slot, a very healthy option given their lofty ambitions so i dont expect them to throw us a bone. They are probably still smarting from handing us 17 million for Betnley.

Most things with Spurs come down to money.....Lloris will not stay for long if he's in and out of the team......they'll lose money on him as well as a very decent keeper...leaving them with a 41 year old who they'll have to replace soon anyway.

Friedel won't want to sit on the bench at his age so I think Levy will let him go for around 500 grand or something.....they would still have to pay his wages and Cudicini and Gomes are fine for back-up.

Only problem is if this has been leaked the head spud will spike the deal. Nobody gets anything from Spurs on the cheap.

I think the head spud and the manager will want Friedel out of the way to prevent future embarrassment and confrontation with the fans if the new bloke doesn't step up to the plate immediately. In fact I'm pretty sure of it cos by accounts the spurs fans like Brad and he could quickly become a monkey on Lloris's shoulder.

Hope the deal doesn't come off. Brad was a fantastic servant to the club but that was in the past, once again we are seeing far too much sentimentality at the club. I just don't see the point of this move.

That has very little to do with it. Any (potential) transfer should be taken on its own merits. Namely that Friedel is still a tremendous athlete who can mix it at the highest level. Swapping him for Robinson would be great business, with the added bonus of raising morale and providing understudies like Jake Kean with an excellent role model.

Makes poifect sense to me.

Bleeding Nora, for the umpteenth time someone said Friedel might be coming back as a No 2 / first-team coach and I said goalkeepers generally don't make good coaches / managers - which is true as they have been very few successful ones in football over the years. This did not mean he would not make a good goalkeeping coach, which of course he probably would.

I see your point jim, I replied before I had read the whole thread but a goalkeeping coach is a coach no? You don't usually slip with those minor details. What's Nora got to do with anything.

To sign Friedel, while letting Robinson go would be madness. Shorttermism at it worst. This only makes sense as Brad and Robbo fighting for their places, with Brad's experience being made use of elsewhere - i.e; replacing Mimms.

Do you think we can afford either of those two to sit on a bench Den? Cos I don't..

Spoken about coaching / managing in the pro game to many people in the game over the past 30 - 40 years and the the general view is goalkeepers don't make good managers. Just relaying the views of those who know what they are talking about.

You should try it more often.......... You wrote this almost 5 years ago. Since then Friedel has not missed a Premier league match until last month!

Blacklaw was okay but feckin hell, not in the same class as either Flowers or Friedel. The fact that he replaced the hapless John Barton, just 12 months after Barton joined us from Preston, says it all.

Blacklaw I would describe as 'burly' whereas Mr Barton was a tad 'portly' !

Would also put the likes of Roger Jones, Jim Arnold and Terry Gennoe ahead of Blacklaw.

Yeah both Blacklaw and Barton would make Robinson look emaciated. I'd have your three plus Paul Bradshaw, John Filan and Fred Else before Blacklaw.

Another for you Plastic.........

Friedel ?

Has to be a joke. The guy is 40+, past his best and would be a very expensive addition to an astronomical wage bill.

We also happen to have Robbo and goalkeeper is not exactly where we need strengthening.

IMO, this is absolute nonsense.

Night as well give Bryan Douglas the opportunity to come back.

Agreed.

Don't think you've ever really rated Brad though Simon have you? 2005 you wrote this........

How wrong could you be? 7 more years on and not a Premier League match missed!

MM put a keeper on a par with gennoe etc on here, technically, Roger Jones was the best keeper Rovers have ever had, he had everything, so much so, he kept Shilton out of the Stoke side and their manager George Eastham commented on Jones, 'The Best he had ever seen'

Kelbo - think you misunderstood. One poster was commenting on how his father raved about Blacklaw. I said there were several ahead of him including Jones, Arnold and Gennoe. I did not say the three of them were on the same level !!!

Roger Jones was top class and still a mystery why he didn't really play at the top level for any length of time. Remembering watching him from the BE at a time when keepers didn't always wear gloves !

This kind of warfare can be dangerous. I presume they will be searching back at things you've said too haha.

There should be a thread dedicated to misguided posts from the past.

That'd be a GREAT idea. Hopefully people would be happy to 'fess up their own posts too, so it isn't all 'you said this'.

so why mention it Jim? Its not like he has come in yet, and its not like he will be a number 2 or coach. People are just happy, that respected former players are coming in, and therfore creating a much better atmosphere.

Yes-that's my point too.

Another one---if this happens its because Berg wants it that way? Is is just possible that he knows Freidal better than we do?!!!!

Are we doubting his judgement already?

Well it's certainly not something I'm disappointed we went for. Interesting move, but more signs for me that Berg knows what he's doing to a much greater extent than who he succeeded.

Wonder how Robbo feels now that the cat is out of the bag ?? No way would we get Brad and keep him as well as we couldnt pay the wages surely. And that brings us nicely on to that other waste of Shebbys money-Sondomierski?? Clearly don't fancy him then do they??

Brad would have been a good influence and you would certainly feel calmer with him between the sticks at the Dingles place. But you can't help thinking he will be £2million a year so in reality we haven#t gone anywhere even with Robbo going in Jan and you would think there are more obvious positions that need help before the GK.

Once again -if we don't go up this year you start to worry like feck at what could happen.

It might be that Robinson is behind it. It's not impossible that our interest in Brad has come about because Robinson has a better offer on the table and has suggested that he is seeking a move in January. Lots of possible twists and turns in these matters.
