Performance of new managers in Championship:

  • Holloway 6 matches, 13 points, averaging 2.2 points per match
  • Dyche 6 matches, 10 points, averaging 1.7 points per match
  • McCarthy 6 matches, 10 points, averaging 1.7 points per match
  • Freedman 5 matches, 7 points, averaging 1.4 points per match
  • Berg 5 matches, 5 points, averaging 1.0 points per match
  • Appleton 4 matches, 4 points, averaging 1.0 points per match

Feels like we need a minimum of 4 points from Bolton and Burnley matches to get some momentum and confidence going.

Do us a favor and tell us what the 6 games prior to the new managers got. Just curious.

Great result for Ipswich tonight though.

Down to tenth now, pressure's on again. But even a win won't see us into the top six.

The top two are starting to disappear out of sight, but has anyone actually thought over the last month or so that we could actually go straight up? I'm anticipating a draw tonight, or possibly a marginal win for us. And then a draw at Turf Moor.

I think this season will end with us finishing around about where we are now. We seem to be able to bully the weaker teams, but get found out against the serious promotion chasers.

IF we win tonight - we will actually make up a little ground on the top 2.

Talking to Blackpool fans - the second half of the season often sees the "softer", but more skillful sides start to pick up more points - as the well organised hard working teams struggle to keep up the intensity over a 46 game season. Having said that - the transfer window will be huge for us - hopefully Best will come back toward end of January, and Henning will have had the chance to assess the squad and will hopefully be given funds to ship some out and bring some in.

Will Venky's be willing to release more funds in January if we're not even in the play-off picture? I'm not sure they would have the stomach for it. Perhaps Berg could do some horse trading and get some useless sods out and some half decent players in, in any case I suspect he won't have much room for manoeuvre.

Let's put it this way, if things stay as we are, we'll not get get promoted, barring a miracle.

I see the crowd against Millwall was quite poor also. I guess Venky's are struggling to win the fans back.

Cheer up feller.

I deal in facts.

What gets measured gets done !

It's points on the board that get you promoted.

We are now past that 'good vibe' stage with Berg.

For the sake of the club and its supporters, I want him to deliver but I am not certain he will.

But we are by no means in the delirious stage which you don't ever appear to have come out of.

Might be worth reading this, ring any bells, comparisons etc?

The 1983-1984 season will go down as a genuine watershed for Everton. It had everything…including a fans' campaign for Kendall to be sacked.

Six wins in 21 league games left The Toffees in a precarious position in the First Division table and the punters voted with their feet - with just 13,659 spectators sitting through a tedious 0-0 draw with Coventry at

Goodison on New Years' Eve.

The crowd may have been sparse but the chants of 'Kendall Out' must have been deafening for a man who was desperate to turn things around.

The Chairman stood by his man, Kendall stood by his players, Kevin Brock inadvertently teed up Adrian Heath for a late League Cup equaliser at Oxford United in January, and, sure enough, the tide began to turn.

Everton reached the League Cup Final, only to lose to Liverpool, but then went one better by lifting the FA Cup, defeating Watford at Wembley.

The best, though, was yet to come. Everton's magnificent finish to the 1983-1984 season brought heightened expectations…and Kendall didn't disappoint.

The 1984-1985 Championship was won in comfort as well as style, the European Cup Winners' Cup was brought to Goodison after a memorable run through to the Final, and a unique treble was only denied the team when tiredness caught up with them in extra-time at Wembley in a second successive FA Cup Final.

Redolent of last year and people saying things like: "We're only 5 points off of tenth, FFS".

Sorry, just does not wash with me.

You must lead a very stressful life, then as there is no reason why at the moment we can't reach the play-offs given how long there is left in the season. Thanks for teaching me a new word though.

It's possible that we can reach the play-offs, but at the moment we are off the pace and not showing promotion form. That's pretty obvious. I would much rather be in the top six right now than have to rely on making a late run.

Time will tell who is correct, it would be great to go up, but I don't want to give myself false hope after 2 years of total calamity.

I reckon Henning Berg must have a more stressful life than me, for one. But I am losing my job one week before Christmas, thanks for reminding me. But I would like to think my views are informed by realism. Either I am a relentless pessimist or you are an obstinate dreamer, we shall see come May.

It's not necessarily false hope. It's putting things into context and seeing that this really isn't the time for panic stations and there is time to turn it around. We've shown glimpses of what we can do and given more time I feel we will improve. We might not do, of course, but only time will tell and it just isn't worth it for peoples sanity to constantly be on a downer when it needn't be the case. I don't think I'm an obstinate dreamer, nor you a relentless pessimist (there are some, though) as we both know it could go either way, but given the position we are in now, it's pointless being in either of those positions.

Play offs isnt acceptable, its either first or second and we are way off this target.

I'd say promotion would be acceptable.

Yes, and it wont be via the play offs.

West Ham were up there for most of the season, a late surge from Reading unfortunateley pushed them out. Rovers arent in that position.

So far Wolves, Boro, Palace and Millwall have shown that they are better sides than Rovers, do you conveniently forget this Plastics.

Not over a season they haven't.

Well it's play-offs or nothing.

I'd bet my right kidney on us not going straight up. Nine points away, we'd need some up-turn in form to get up there.

I'm guessing you wouldn't really do that. Unlikely but certainly possible.
