every apppointment is a gamble at the end of the day and being pessimistic people will always find a fault with anyone we appoint however the club should be reducing the gamble by employing people who have worked in the championship and been succesful in it!the club could appoint RDM and he could do a rubbish job but the fans would agree that it was a sensible appointment and potentially a great appointment but there are no garantees in football!

Got West Brom promoted from the Championship, but was sacked in the Premier League following a poor start. Did good at Chelsea but the talent and money he had ont tap was ridiculous. Plus all the players respected the hell out of him and the fans loved him. He may struggle if given another job in the PL. Perfect for the Championship though, doubt he'd come to us. I know you was only using RDM as an example too.

Eriksson won 17 major trophies as a manager, with a variety of league clubs in Sweden, Portugal and Italy, between 1979 and 2000, and became the first manager to win league-and-cup doubles in three different countries. He later managed the national teams of England, Mexico and Ivory Coast, and two clubs in England.

I would close this thread now.

IMO, chances of appointing a new manager this season are extremely remote. Bowyer would have to do appallingly bad in next 3 or 4 games not to get it until at least the end of the season.

I agree with closing the thread - Loons are bored now, leave it to SS on a shoestring and GB stays in charge, no manager with worth would work under these conditions. Good luck, I feel play offs are best we can do, but it's a long season in this league, and we don't have the depth we need. Only bright spot is how Best performs when he comes back - I hope he's the perfect foil for Jordan.

You say that like it's a bad thing - although it depends on your definition of 4 appalling back-to-back games.

Let's say 3 points or less from 12 = appalling.

If he gets 4 draws, it's average - not appalling. A win, two draws, and a defeats... you see where I'm going with this.

If Bowyer does well, say 6 points or more then why shouldn't he get the gig? that would be 5 wins out of 7 matches. Sign him up - we wouldn't need anyone else.

On the basis that Hughes has ruled himself out, every time I hear a new (and realistic) name mentioned - including those in the poll - I've started doing a "preferable to Bowyer?" test. So far, the only one would be Curbishley. If that's realistic, time will tell.

It's all right everyone banging on about playoffs/promotion etc but even if we went up dies anyone fancy the humiliation that would follow ? This squad is about 40 million short of a prem team .

I'm not sure we are that far away, Abs.

We wouldn't be midtable any time soon but I reckon we could survive with the squad we have now.

I know a Blackpool supporter though who hated the PL experience and wouldn't want to repeat it. It's simpler for them though, they have costs which are within their means as a Championship club. Rovers do not. We probably need a couple of years as a yo-yo club to swell the coffers a bit but failing to go up and we could be in Pompey-esque strife if we can't afford to pay existing players contracts and aren't able to negotiate their sale to other clubs.

A blind man could have guided that England squad to two world cup quarter finals as a MINIMUM and since he was dumped by England his record is that of a truly busted flush.

Of course anyone could have done it. That's why we failed when McClaren took over.

"Golden Generation" my arse.

Leicester 55 games 24 wins 17 defeats.

Pretty bloody good considering out last two incumbents. Leicester were in turmoil at the time as well iirc

Over halfway gone and this squad is only mid table in the chpionship. How it is prem viable I have no idea. 40 million is fair I'd say ... 2 top defenders , 2 midfield /wingers and 2 strikers , wouldn't give you much change. Not just that but the squad needs depth .

Spent a load of dosh and then left by mutual consent'.

I'm sure his image will appeal to the goggle eyed star@#/?ers in India though.

Oh btw I will never forget Ericson's sickly smile for the entire second half against a 10 man, defensively weak Brazilian team stripped of the two Ronnies. He didn't have a bloody clue what to do with the result that we didn't have a shot on target for the entire 45 mins.

Not bad for a 'multiple loser' is it?

Sven is a fine manager and would be streets ahead of Brown and managers of that ilk.

Also can't believe that some still think that Sven diddled Jack and betrayed him.

It's well documented that Jack ripped up the contract after they'd had a chat and they remained friends afterwards.

I think we've got a decent squad who have been allowed to become unfit (although got a lot of luck at the start of the season - before many teams found us out) then we had the dour Berg unable to motivate and inspire. Now we have a man in the dugout who looks like he's got a Plan A and a Plan B and is animated and motivating. All of a sudden we've started to look like a team that should be aiming for promotion.

I agree we may need some additions although I don't think we need 2 of each as you suggest - certainly not strikers. A central midfielder and a central defender (one of which to be a leader of men) and we should easily survive in the PL - not midtable but survive. Having said that, over the next couple of years (with the new TV deal) it may still cost £40m for those two alone. If that's the case though, we may as well give up now as we cannot compete long term with those kinds of numbers. Not by 'washing our own face' under any fair play rules, anyway.

Whatever happened to "My word is my bond"? Used to count a lot not long ago but now it seems to mean nowt.

Of course he spent money. They were an established Championship club that wanted to get to the Premier league quickly. We have spent over £10m this year and where are we?

He would do well with this team and stands out from the managerial dross that we have been linked with. I'm sure the players would react well to finally being under a proper manager. Something that some of them have never had.

However no need to worry as Venky's won't cough up for a manager.
