[Archived] Michael Appleton - New Rovers Manager

We are all under the assumption here that if we don't get promoted then Appleton will get another crack at trying to get Rovers promoted next season. Remember we are dealing with Venky's here, IIRC Balaji was quoted just before Appleton was appointed that he still had aspirations of promotion for Rovers this season.

If we don't go up I would give him another season, will Venky's?

This is nonsense.

Of course it's pertinent to talk about Steve Kean. His numerous mistakes are a big part of the problems Appleton faces. Just because he's gone doesn't mean the damage he inflicted over his two year stay suddenly evaporated too. Appleton's job is in many ways going to be defined by how successfully he repairs the damage caused by Steve Kean. His spectre still looms large over the club and just because he's still discussed doesn't mean people are "depressed", it's just looking at things realistically. I swear some people genuinely think that now we've hired Appleton everything is good again and we'll be back in the prem in no time. There are still so many problems at this club, some of you really need to take your heads out of the sand and realise the nightmare isn't over yet. It's just a little easier to endure at the moment because we have somebody with a clue in the manager's seat.

I'm not saying everything is all of a sudden fantastic. Clearly the damage done by the fat bald pig will takes years to repair.

My point is he is gone and we have a new manager who may or may not be the right man to fix most of the problems created by the aformentioned pig. I want to discuss how MA is going and what he is doing to rebuild the club. I think the depression which covered the club is lifting and that Appleton is in a large part responsible for that.

I think this season is a write off and was so the second the fat one was left in charge after relegation.

But can we talk about our CURRENT manager on this tread and what he is doing for the club (both good and bad). I do actually agree with you that the club is still up to its ears in it and that until the chicken farmers clear off that will be the case.

But discuss kean in his tread.

Surely we're not so simple that we can only talk about one of Appleton and Kean? I agree that this thread shouldn't become clogged with comments about Kean, but if the discussion is relevant to Appleton's position I see no reason why both can't be discussed tbh,

I effing hope so. He's looking like he can stabilise the situation at least, and if he was to be given the boot in the summer, it'll be yet another crazy merry-go-round with God knows who in charge (I'd put a tenner on Jim Smith coming out of retirement since we've had so many bald managers). The most important thing is to keep a solid platform for next season, whichever division we're in.

I've had a bit of time on my hands today and as a consequence have read through a few threads and made a few posts. I'm a tad concerned that if I post again I may be accused of being influenced by Mrs Robinson.;-)

However, I am in agreement that Appleton has had the courage and conviction to try to sort our mess out. It would be great if by some fluke we could worm our way into the playoffs but the only time to realistically judge him is next year.

I take comfort in the fact that at last we appear to have someone at the helm with nous, balls and integrity who wants to get back to basics and build from that. With what he's currently got, he can't work miracles.

For me, a cup appearance or two this year at Wembley would be fantastic but the time to really stand in judgement of Appleton would be next Christmas. Hopefully by then we'll be 10 points clear at the top of The Championship and not 10 points adrift at the base of The Premier.

Our financial position would be greatly improved if we were 10 points adrift in the PL at Christmas.

Right now I'd take that if offered. If we have to be a yo-yo club for a few years to get us steady then so be it.

And I bet there are 23 other teams in this league who would accept the same.

So would I on the premise that if we were there we may not be 10 points adrift and even if we were at least we'd have another 2 years parachute payments to fall back on to regroup.

Clearly your ultimate comment is a given.

I was thinking of the "even if we were" part of your post to be honest.

No one wants to be bottom of any league but it would buy us 12 months breathing space if we were promoted this season.

3 years in reality, assuming we were relegated in the first season.

£? For the year in the PL and 2 years parachute.

All hypothetical really because unless we manage 10 wins from last 14 games, it ain't gonna happen.

The financial reward of being in the Prem is so great now that it would be worth going up even if we were guaranteed to lose every single game, just because the money alone would bring huge stability to the club's long-term future.

Which is pretty sad, really.

You're spot on. Oyston and Kilby would certainly endorse that sentiment!

My be wrong thread, but what happened to Bowyer when Appleton came in? Did he go back to the reserves or did he leave the club?

he went back to being reserve team manager.

Appleton wanted him to be first team coach but Bowyer wanted to stay as Reserve Team Manager.

Bowyer is still involve in the pre match training before the games and Watches the games in the stand for home games. hes got a tv monitor in front so he can relay messages to Appleton and rest of the coaching staff.

Thanks for the info Chaddy. I was hoping it was something like that. It would be foolish to let him go, but then again we are dealing with Wenky's...
