Ricky Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 I'd like to think not but who knows. Lets just get a win tonight out of the way first.

heysham rover Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 We were only ever told Kean was well respected by Venkys and JA, I dont seem to remember anyone else shouting it from the rooftops, regardless, he may well have been a well respected 'coach' but thats all he had ever been, he had never held a position above the role first team coach (I think he was coach rather than assistant at Fulham and Cov, may be wrong). Appleton has held manager positions at 2 championship clubs (both very very testing clubs at that) and been assistant manager at a premier league club under the now England manager not to mention working with the West Brom youth teams for 5 years, oh and he was regarded highly enough to take the reigns as West Brom's caretaker manager when Di Matteo left. To compare the two is ridiculous and is done so only to meet certain agendas.
Elegia Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Expectations are lowering and people are accepting ever decreasing standards. Once Appleton is eventually potted I wouldn't be surprised if we ended up with Judan Ali, by conditioning us into accepting less suitable managers each time they may just eventually get their man! It looks like Appleton will be announced as manager today and it is about time a decision went right.........for the sake of the club I love I really do pray it is this one......just like I did with every other decision the loons have made. Time will tell I guess........
Parsonblue Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Conveniently forget that the ony two managers to get us into the top flight in the last 40 years were both experienced managers who had achieved things. You get nowhere employing wet behind the ears novices The two years we had under Howard Kendall were hugely successful.
47er Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 The only way I can see this being a better option than keeping G-Bow on, is if Appleton is actually allowed to make some swift January purchases. Rumour has it he's been angry at the lack of backing at Blackpool, maybe he has assurances he will have a budget here for the remainder of January. We are desperately short at centre back and central midfield, while a winger would be a nice treat. Let's not forget we are likely to lose Ollson, Givet and Robinson in this transfer window. Chance of us strengthening seem remote. Unlikely to remain on par IMO.
Rover_Shaun Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Putting their similar poor records to one side the only real comparison needed between Kean and Appleton is that neither were what the club needed when they were appointed.
CapeTownRover Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 why do people continue to point out his win % ratio? would anybody have done any better at a Portsmouth team, who only had a few players left, and where he basically had to throw in kids to get a team on the field. He has only won 2 games at Blackpool, but again only lost 2 out of 11 games...
LDRover Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Also comparisons to previous appointments is irrelevant as the board structure was robust and the people making the decisions fully qualified to do so in those days.
broadsword Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Yes, but only won 2 out of 11. There was absolutely no need for this appointment. Bowyer's just won 3 on the trot. What is wrong with these people, do they have chicken @#/? for brains? Don't they ever keep their word? An unnecessary gamble.
Steve Kean's Hypnotoad Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Appleton is Shagnew's puppet in exactly the same way that Berg was Singh's. The only reason he got the job is their Preston connection and this "jobs for the boys" ethos that's been going on at the club since people realised how easy it was to make money out of Venkys. We're being taken for another ride and to be honest its embarassing how much of our support is happy to yet again jump on board. Burnley fans were probably dreading the prospect of us getting someone like Davies, and must be laughing their asses off at who we've got instead. That Appleton's appointment is being justified in some sections is incredible. Another rat has come to gnaw at our carcass, thats all this is.
tomphil Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 It will be attractive for them the way he worked with a tiny wage bill at Pompey and the notorious tight gits the Oystons. Im sure the ultimate aim here now will be to screw the wage bill into the ground after this season whether we end up in admin or not. The parachute money is 48 mill over 4 seasons so they will be looking at a profit at the end of that with player sales being used as well to run the club and re-invest, promotion would just be a massive bonus but i don't even think they are that bothered anymore. Getting a guy like Appleton in who could get in freebies etc and get the best out of what he's got whilst they bring young players through and foist young foriegn players on him to go straight in the squad for a quick turnover is the way it looks like going. If it works well they don't even need to be in the Prem for the next 4 years !
M-K Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Don't forget Mark Hughes who had not managed a league team previously. International manager with Wales, one of the club's senior pro's, played at the very highest level, learned his trade under some of the best managers in the business, appointed by a competent board that backed him in the transfer market, etc, etc...
neophox Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 How come Oyston has let Appleton slip away with so ease? Reallly strange.
JMillZz Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 We were only ever told Kean was well respected by Venkys and JA, I dont seem to remember anyone else shouting it from the rooftops, regardless, he may well have been a well respected 'coach' but thats all he had ever been, he had never held a position above the role first team coach (I think he was coach rather than assistant at Fulham and Cov, may be wrong).Appleton has held manager positions at 2 championship clubs (both very very testing clubs at that) and been assistant manager at a premier league club under the now England manager not to mention working with the West Brom youth teams for 5 years, oh and he was regarded highly enough to take the reigns as West Brom's caretaker manager when Di Matteo left. To compare the two is ridiculous and is done so only to meet certain agendas. Well you're talking codswallop. I have no agenda at all. If you read my previous post I am supporting the fans getting behind him and hope he does well. People like Sir Alex etc initially did come out about Kean. I am just saying being respected in the football world doesn't transcend into being a good managerial appointment.
LeChuck Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 How come Oyston has let Appleton slip away with so ease? Reallly strange. Apparently Appleton is a strong character and is not happy with Oyston not giving him any funds to the point where he won't even repair a badly damaged playing surface. Holloway wanted out of there badly as well so I think the problem is definitely with Oyston.

Appleton: Is it more experience to be an international manager than a Championship manager ? He didnt play on the highest level, but instead have spent time learning coaching and man management (its hardly negative is it?). Learned his trade under Roy Hodgson and was well regarded at WBA. Its not Appletons fault that he has been appointed during this regime.

They think he's rinsing them for all their worth and investing zilch back into the side.

When they were in the Premier League didn't he take millions out of the club and put it into his parent company? I remember seeing something on North West Tonight about it and Oyston was defending the decision saying he had put millions into the club previous to that.

Also sold the ground to one of his other company's then sold it back to the company that own Blackpool for a massive profit when they had Premier league money, wonder if he has any Indian relatives

Yeah, he paid himself an £11 million pound salary for the season they were in the PL, and wouldn't give players their bonuses!

I remember seeing something on North West Tonight about it and Oyston was defending the decision saying he had put millions into the club previous to that. Took something to the tune of 12 mill out of the club from their Prem money. They refuse to reinvest and that's what jacked off Holloway and now Appleton, although to be fair they appeared to prop up the club for years in the lower divisions and probably would do so again so they may see it as justified. Not sure most of their fans do.
bigbrandjohn Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Time is now. History is not destiny. Lets just hope his battling qualities raise the team to another level. As someone said we have a good squad for this division and three wins on the bounce prove we can win with a positive attitude. The mess in the boardroom experienced v young, end of January v this weekend are as much a part of our life as Rafa, Torres, Bruce Buck etc. Even the richest clubs in the World have these traumas that try the emotions of their fans. I am not happy with the way the club is run nobody is , but the tide is turning in our favour as other fans see the split and total incompetence. Lets thank Gary for a job very well done and support the new manager in a positive way. Let the Football do the talking for a change.
BigBar Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Really undecided about this one, not gonna slate the fellow without a fair crack, he hasnt done anything yet but people say he has the potential..the way i see it is if he manages to get us to the playoffs he will have done a great job, if he doesnt but comes close he will go into the new season with a bit of momentum and well settled in..if he carries on as berg did, he will be gone in the summer and we can start the search for a new manager...again!
