On the plus side...

He is a hungry young manager and will want to succeed. (Yes, I know!)

He has experience working under extreme pressure. e.g. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/aug/20/michael-appleton-portsmouth

Glad it's not a 6 month contract, at least this gives us some stability - hopefully.

He's not some washed up has-been.

We have some closure - for now at least

Now...

He has to keep our good form going - the pressure is on.

He will need quickly win over the players who have enjoyed working under Bowyer.

He will have to deal with the January transfer window - and probably the loss of the good Olsson.

He will have to beg, steal and borrow to bring anyone in.

Its a total joke if Westwood is going to be assistant manager. His CV makes Judan Ali look like Mourihno.

Are the likes of Gomes, Murphy, Dunn, Dann etc with hundreds of premier league and international caps going to learn anything from him? NO

TBF Appleton's not exactly the cream of the crop when it comes to experience. WBA caretaker for 1 match, Portsmouth for a year, and Blackpool for a couple of months. he should arguably be an assistant himself at this level, not a manager. But it is what it is. Westwood is as good as he can do I'd imagine.

Think they missed a trick by not promoting Bowyer to assistant manager to be honest.

Possibly Ricky, but did Bowyer want to be assistant manager? Everything I've heard from him seems to indicate he'll be very happy going back to his previous job in the reserves.

In terms of the short term popularity boost it would have been a good appointment but would probably undermine Appleton with the players and also lead to rover needing to recruit a new reserve team coach which is a key position concerning our future seeing as we look likely to be developing players rather than buying the finished product. For me leave him where he is but give him a payrise or a bonus :-)

Certainly would have gone some way to appeasing the rumoured player requests and eased the appointment a little more for supporters

I can understand the sentiment but Berg's problem was that he didn't bring in his own men. Different situation, granted, as the previous incumbents were all Kean's men but the principle is the same.

The trouble is, this one now has to stick. If he goes on a Berg run, we can't be looking for a fourth manager in 10 games. This is the last throw of the dice.

* Gulp *

OJ, just out of interest how many international caps does mourinho have??

Nothing to do with his playing career, its the chronic lack of experience of coaching, let alone being an assistant manager:

4 months coaching at Pompey, 2 months at Blackpool - that's it.

Bring back Ray Mathias.

I've said before, we've got the highest wage bill in the league on players, why are we skimping on proper experienced coaches.

Mourinho never played at top level and was a PE teacher!!

But he did learn his trade off one of the best and most respected and successful managers in the world who had managed Porto, Barca and England amongst others.

Appleton is apparently a student of Ferguson so we have to hope he is the Batman in this particular dynamic duo.
