Napier caught the eye when he played for Workington and scored two goals in the league cup, at Ewood, when they beat a strong first division rovers 5-1. That was a pretty dour evening.

A gate of 5000 I think, of which I was one. Anyone else?

Yes Den. I was there. I could not believe it. We drew away 1-1 (I think). We all expected an easy victory. What a humiliation!

It was worse than losing away 3-1 to non-league Oxford Utd.

I didn't know that Napier had been playing for Workington, though.

Oxford were in the 4th Div then not non league and captained by Ron Atkinson. Good report and a good clip of the action (for 1964) with a small reminder of Duggies control and body swerve. Seems crosses were our downfall that day too and even with the excellent Mike England at CH! I didn't rem this but if we had won it would have set up a local derby for the 5th round at Ewood against PNE!

btw I rem this most because I actually dreamed that we would lose 3-1 the night before! How spooky is that?

They've given him time already of a fashion. I've never known a press conference to unveil a new manager take this long! It almost seems the club is either somewhat reluctant or if not that they are determined to underwhelm the supporters. Given that one of the head honchos is reckoned to be a PR expert everything that they do is just wrong isn't it?

why r ppl bother about some stupid media conference??

Pretty much what I've thought since fans used to go through Allardyce's interviews with a fine tooth comb and then use material from them to criticism him for the rest of the season.

Press conferences, interviews, newspaper columns, radio shows (poor old Jason Roberts), all are given far too much importance. 99% of what matters is just winning matches.

I'm betting after this press conference there'll be 50-100 posts praising how Appleton came across and listing things he said that mean he's the right man for the job. Bit like there was after Berg's.

I would have liked to see Bowyer left in charge and allowed to bring players in in Jan.

Appleton is a gamble, simple as that. He doesnt have a successfull track record as he hasnt managed for that long. I would have prefered we had a proven manager reducing the gamble.

He will have my support as he is now our manager but I will judge him on results - simple as that. If he gets us winning games I dont care what style of football we have etc

Our last 4 games at least show we should be competitive even if there are obvious issues with the make up of our squad and 3 out and 3 in would balance the squad substantially. (at least one combative midfielder and a commanding central defender would certainly help).

Its time our managers were judged on results.

Sam - decent results - never should have gone.

Baldie (wont say his name) - poor results in first season should have gone then.

Black - mixed results but not completely convincing . Right to have not left him in charge

Berg - poor results not good enough (I still respect him immensly though).

Bowyer - best results since Sam - players responded to him - therefore should have stayed in charge.

Appleton - lets see.....

Come on Hypnotoad, its part and parcel of the game today. Press conferences, interviews, etc etc.. in a normal world and at a normal club, he would have been unveiled after signing or at least the next day. Fans would deffinately like to get his views and vision for the club.

Yeah that's the thing.

Obviously none of us really care about the actual interview, it's the fact that it's symbolic of the shambles our club is at the moment. Any other club would have done the press conference by now because that's what normal football clubs do.

First official picture with Appleton in Rovers clothes showing "Probiz"

http://www.rovers.co.uk/news/article/probiz-extend-shirt-deal-604311.aspx

I wonder if Rovers' new PR gurus instructed him to wear long sleeves to cover up his unsightly tattoos. ^_^

(Reading that story, I noticed that the Academy games had been called off because of the weather)

Personally if he wanted to manage my club I'd have insisted he had them removed.

Personally if he wanted to manage my club I'd have insisted that I don't give a feck what you look like as the only thing that matters in football is the bloody result after 90 minutes

+1

Something like tattoos have absolutely no relevance to a person or how suitable they are for a job.

Particularly a job in football, where it's more uncommon to be un-tattooed.
