Backroom Mike E Posted February 14, 2013 Backroom Posted February 14, 2013 it would be better viewing than synchronising swimming. Some of the ladies have rather lovely legs and bums though

Backroom DE. Posted February 17, 2013 Backroom Posted February 17, 2013 Wrestling has been culled because it doesn't get TV ratings - welcome to the modern day way of thinking. It's an absolute disgrace and the IOC should be ashamed that they've even considered this let alone implement it. Common sense will hopefully prevail and wrestling is reinstated.
Guest Norbert Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoSIye7AH9U Does have swearing.
Audax Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 Just wondering about how much the Olympics helps women's football. Anyone know? They say it's significant but I only think it's significant for USA and Brazil. They should do away with it, I think USA has won most of the gold medals since its been a medal event in the '90s but 2011 had the Women's World Cup, I think they should just make that one count, hold it every 2 years if it is that important. Also, I don't think the men's event seems to work very well in these modern times. ---------- They really should keep wrestling, it should be a core sport of the Olympics, I can appreciate most of the other sports so it is hard to say what should be eliminated but wrestling should stay.
Audax Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 Wish I had the wit to be a cartoonist, good point here.... I think....... do we bring back the Chariot Races too? Original Olympic Sport!! By the way, the strip is Tank McNamara and one can look it up if curious. A link posted was not working.
Steve Moss Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 They should definitely keep wrestling. How many swimming events are there? Cut a half dozen of those and keep some of the more traditional sports.
Guest Norbert Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 More cycling events since we're so good at them (and I like them), get rid of football, tennis and golf (i'd just do away with all golf myself. Everywhere.)

It's not a good point though because Chariot Racing hasn't been performed at the Olympics since Ancient Greek times, whereas wrestling has persevered throughout the centuries and adapted to modern times.

I think you are correct DE: Now if I were to be argumentative: I'd say let's have them wrestle au naturelle too! Just kidding, I guess modern horse racing would be a descendant of chariot races and there is that horse racing with carriages.... sorry, I don't know what it's called. I do think horse racing in itself is as well a grand sport. Also, let's not forget the modern Olympics started around 1896. I have a whole record book on what sports have been in the Modern Olympics.... I may get it out later, refresh my memory. Also, the French gentleman who revived it. <---- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_de_Coubertin Courbertin, revived the Olympics... Wrestling is a definitive Olympic Sport, I'm sure if they don't have it the next time, they will bring it back in the future and realize they have made a sport, still, who needs for them to "bring it back".
Al Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 Someone wants to do away with golf and another thinks that horse racing is a grand sport? What's the matter with you people. Have you totally gone mad?
Guest Norbert Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 Golf ruins the environment, and is a sport for fat accountants. I'm not doubting that there is skill, but I think the tendancy to see moobs in a sweater slightly tarnishes it as a 'sport'. It is also elitist, since an amatuer cannot win the Open, the founder of Augusta was a full on racist c_cksack and it still has a bit of a whiff of the double breasted blazer about it. Anyway, slightly connected to this thread-Frankie Boyle is at it again. http://www.tntmagazine.com/news/olympics-and-paralympics/chris-brown-v-frankie-boyle-in-olympics-twitter-fight
Hanks Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Since the filthy lucre is the be all and and end all of sport these days I see a time when unfashionable indoor sports such as / wrestling, indoor shooting events and coupled with non athletic indoor sports- snooker/darts get incorporated into the winter Olympics. The winter Olympics is the poor cousin of the main event so moving unfashionable events to pad out the coverage out and incorporating potential big TV audience "sports" should appeal to the powers that be. You could also add Bowling, several Martial arts sports, Squash and other sports into the mix, In fact the more unfashionable sports you move to winter gives more coverage time available for 20/20 Cricket, rugby sevens, golf and other potential big TV viewing audience's into the mix for the summer Olympics. Its not that I agree with any of this, its just that I am a cynical old Bar steward,

Its not that I agree with any of this, its just that I am a cynical old Bar steward, The strange thing is that there have been all kinds of sports tried in the Olympics, Tug-Of-War, there are petitions out there to bring it back, actually, I think Tug-of-war is an exciting event. I guess Tug-of-war and the likes of those kinds of games are seen as sort of like Highlands games or something, what next? Wheelbarrow racing? 3 Legged sack races? One Olympics had Motor Boat racing, yes, one of those early ones in England. In fact, Croquet and Indian Club Swinging too! This article talks about some of it: http://positivepressagency.com/2012/07/30/9-olympic-sports-that-have-been-discontinued/

I suppose you are into darts. Golf ruins the environment? Since you bring up Augusta. Have you ever seen a view like that course? If that is ruining the environment I wish they would ruin the rest of the countryside. As for being elitist, you can play most courses , without paying a membership, sometimes for less than £20. Compares well with football matches. I don't suppose weight lifters and shot putters slightly tarnish their sports do they. I know of no reason why an amatuer (sic) can't win the Open. Obviously they can't win the money.
Guest Norbert Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 They don't get the claret jug if they win The Open, or so I've been told. Fair enough about the money, but if you're Obviously you've never heard of that course Donald Trump is trying to build in Scotland, or those courses in places like Dubai where the limited water resources are being wasted so the rich can have a jolly in that decadent neverland built by Bangladeshi coolies whose passports have been stolen by their employers. Sorry for getting all Amnesty International there, but it is a point worth making Golf is obviously a game for puffed up little men with inflated sense of self-importance, and middle class Magrot types, dare I say it, like one of my sisters. Golf courses steamroller any natural wildlife into homogonised, manicured, Singaporesque levels of dull oblivion. And golf is such a boring game. Men with moobs and dodgy jumpers strolling around a carefully maintained park. And for the record, I also don't like darts, so you can pick up any spelling mistakes I have made in order to make yourself look the big man, and go back to your tedious game and genrally jog on.

You are just being silly. Golf is a game for everybody now not puffed up little men. Go to the golf courses in the UK and you will find people from all walks of life and ages enjoying what is a skillful and absorbing game. Talking golf courses in Dubai is just stupid. You may as well criticise horse racing or tennis on top of hotels. If you think golf is elitist then you have to also ban tennis, fencing, all equestrian events, clay shooting and a host of other sports that you have to be rich to learn to play. Athletics stadia, not to mention football and most other sports also need specialist places building and all are much more destructive to the environment that well kept golf courses. What has most effect on it's surroundings, Ewood Park or Revidge Golf Course. Every sport needs specialist areas in which to play them and golf is by no means unique in having to build them. Jog on to the pub Norbert. You nickname suits you.
Backroom Mike E Posted March 26, 2013 Backroom Posted March 26, 2013 Golf courses are rarely built anyway. Fence off a massive field, strategically cut it, put 18 holes at various points and Bob's your uncle.
speeeeeeedie Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Just when you thoutght they were out..... http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/09/sports/olympics/wrestling-is-restored-to-the-olympics.html?_r=0 Wrestling is voted back into the Olympics at the expense of softball. The correct decision, for me. Squash lost out though. I think it should be in too whilst getting rid of that awful beach volleyball.
Audax Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Good for you for bringing this up that the Olympics is bringing wrestling back. I can't see how people bring up old threads, I was looking for it myself.
Backroom Tom Posted September 9, 2013 Backroom Posted September 9, 2013 Good to see Personally I'd still get rid of half of the swimming events and maybe that dancing horse stuff
T4E Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Squash lost out though. I think it should be in too whilst getting rid of that awful beach volleyball. Fag.
Backroom Mike E Posted September 9, 2013 Backroom Posted September 9, 2013 Good to see Personally I'd still get rid of half of the swimming events and maybe that dancing horse stuff And quite frankly, the footy and tennis may as well not be there. As much as I enjoyed Murray's Gold medal win, allowing professionals to compete is surely against the spirit of the Olympics?
