Amo Posted April 10, 2013 Author Posted April 10, 2013 Surely a minute's applause would be a better compromise?

Stuart Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Blackburn could hold minute's silence for Margaret Thatcher http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/blackburn-rovers/9984937/Blackburn-could-hold-minutes-silence-for-Margaret-Thatcher.html Knowing the reaction that would draw from any football ground (the former church of the working man) it's interesting that a press story appears suggesting Rovers will attempt it.On the one hand she was honourary vice-president although I'm not sure what she has done for the club. (She may have done loads, I'm genuinely not sure). On the other hand it's a chance to show up Rovers fans as the inhumane, merciless hooligans that it's in a number of people interests to portray us as. It will also ensure yet more publicity for our owners. Even the photo in they article is of the chuckle brothers when it's really absolutely nothing to do with 'the family'. Shameless and cheap by Reading to bring Hillsborough into the equation to silence any dissenting voices. Keep politics OUT of football.

Giant Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 The thought of any tribute to the most most divisive person this country has ever known fills me with horror. Shame on the club for even considering it.

Gav Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 The thought of any tribute to the most most divisive person this country has ever known fills me with horror. Shame on the club for even considering it. The real surprise here is that first someone realised that Thatcher had an affiliation with the club! and second that someone is prepared to make a decision! SHOCK HORROR! As for the game, no wins in 11, so can’t see us breaking that trend, 0-1
Rover_Shaun Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 I was always under the impression that Thatcher as Honourary President was just a gimmick
Gav Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 I was always under the impression that Thatcher as Honourary President was just a gimmick She came to Ewood thats for sure, I can recall the pictures.
G Somerset Rover Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Still two days away until the game but I have that nagging feeling of a massive dissapointment coming our way. Rarely do I get such a strong feeling, but I'm predicting that we'll be leading for the majority of the match only for Derby to sucker punch us late on and claim an ujust draw. Very similar to the Brighton game earlier this year. I need a pint.
broadsword Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 I think Bill Fox was a fan of hers. Can't be sure though.
martonrover Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 She came to Ewood thats for sure, I can recall the pictures. Aye, she used to stand next to Mad Birdie on the Blackburn End ;-) She visited once ever and had no affection for football whatsoever.
bypass06 Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 @BenSmithBBC 3mI understand that Blackburn Rovers will now NOT hold a minute's silence for Mrs Thatcher on Saturday.
mhead Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Someone has made a decision! Mark the day in your Calendar. Would the crowd have been arsed to boo?
jim mk2 Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Blackburn could hold minute's silence for Margaret Thatcher http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/blackburn-rovers/9984937/Blackburn-could-hold-minutes-silence-for-Margaret-Thatcher.html Will be going to the match but will boo long and loud if it happens. Have always been ashamed of the club's association with her.
forumquizmaster Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Will be going to the match but will boo long and loud if it happens. Have always been ashamed of the club's association with her. I was debating whether to come down from Glasgow on Saturday, but for this reason, count me in. I sincerely hope the hag's name has been taken out of the programme by then too.
SIMON GARNERS 194 Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 A small obituary in the programme would be more than enough imo!
Proudtobeblue&white Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Thankfully, for once they have made the right decision and agreed not to have a minutes silence. Would have been gut wrenching, as it would get the loudest reaction of the day otherwise!
Atomicrover Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Well, when I was a teenager in a mining community, my mates who worked at t'pits used to take great delight in deriding me for choosing to try and get an education whilst they had the latest lambrettas, got pi**ed even weekend and looked forward to going on strike each winter to force pay rises based on power cuts, so forgive me if I dont share your enthusiasm at her passing

Was she your mentor at uni.?
West Yorks Rover Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Well, when I was a teenager in a mining community, my mates who worked at t'pits used to take great delight in deriding me for choosing to try and get an education whilst they had the latest lambrettas, got pi**ed even weekend and looked forward to going on strike each winter to force pay rises based on power cuts, so forgive me if I dont share your enthusiasm at her passing I think anyone working in those conditions deserved a decent wage, especially as she was cutting the taxes for her rich tory mates. and lets not forget how she branded all football fans as animals, more or less. Oh and while i'm at It, what about the Hillsborough cover-up, her and cabinet had their fingerprints all over that. I'll leave it at that as this is a football mb.
Ewoodbhappy Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 I was debating whether to come down from Glasgow on Saturday, but for this reason, count me in. I sincerely hope the hag's name has been taken out of the programme by then too.To balance the argument - I would have absolutely respected a minutes silence to Maggie Thatcher. Time and again conservative values have to pick up the pieces of Socialist policies & freeloaders. Work hard - gain rewards - stand up for your country when needed. Thatchers values. Hand wringers - do my head in - they ruin your country - and watch idley as damage is done. Bit like down at Ewood. (13 years of labour screwed the UK)

(13 years of labour screwed the UK) Utter garbage. who de-regulated the banks and perpetuated a " greed is good culture " ? although I will say, a proper labour government would have done something about when they got to power, but Blair was no proper socialist imo. Freeloaders, well you only need to look at football really, greed is good though is'nt it !

Hand wringers - do my head in - they ruin your country - and watch idley as damage is done. Bit like down at Ewood. (13 years of labour screwed the UK) which times are these? I know we are living in a time of tax payers (funny socialist idea that) picking up the bills it's costing the government to bail out private banks which have been left to do as they wish due to the neo conservative ideas of the free market, sure 13 years of New Labour also followed the same free market liberalism but New Labour isn;t exactly a bastion of socialism. ''Free loaders'' I guess a lot of the people working in the finance sector especially the one one still taking home 7 figure bonuses could fall into that bracket, since they are basically pocketing state hand outs, whilst at the same time I know plenty of people who work hard in full time jobs and don't really have much to show for it.. I'm sure if we lived in a 'society' that had more principles, and principles that went beyond financial gain what happened down at Ewood wouldn't have happened, take a look at German footy, but this is England and the free market rules thanks to Thatcher and unfortunaley her many millions of followers, so we have the Premier League which is all about money.
