[Archived] What are your best Rovers memories?

Recommended Posts

I apologise for starting the thread if it is considered inappropriate and should be in nostalgia.

Its just that in such desperate times as we now find ourselves to be in, I would guess that revisiting memories of following Rovers evokes so many good memories. Great to share them, for me always brings a smile and something to relate to.

Vale Park? Anfield? Gigg Lane? Meadow Lane? Spotland? Stadium of Light? Home Park? Vetchfield? Gay Meadow? Turf Moor? Plough Lane? etc.

Share your memories................................................................

Nothing will ever beat that day at Anfield in 1995.

I remember turning round and straining to listen to someones transistor radio's commentary of the West Ham v Man U game for the last ten minutes. I even didn't turn around when they scored their second from the free kick. Only turning round to face the pitch on conclusion of the West Ham match, jumping up and down, going ballistic.

Simultaneously almost, our entire section was doing the same. I remember looking at the players, Shearer in particular, looking at us, then looking at the bench. Dalglish turned to his staff, for a second or two they were still, then they started jumping around too.

Eyes back to Shearer, who when he saw this started jumping and running around. Other players were doing the same. Liverpool started attacking but no one cared.

The ref just ended the game. Early I think.

The high lasted for weeks, the pride lasted for years.

No doubt, went after the game to The Clock Face in Huyton - Thwaites pub, run by Evertonians. We set Ceefax onto the top of the Pl, froze it and sat and had a pint whilst staring in disbelief!! Came home, bought a bottle of bubbly from Threshers, and sat and drank it. Wasn't much good for owt the Monday morning!

Worthington cup final or that day at Everton when we knew we were staying up again. Total strangers leaping on you, kissing and hugging you. Wasn't at Anfield

but remember listening on the radio and hearing the Liverpool goal go in and being so downhearted for my kids and husband that i turned off and then remembering it didn't matter as long as Utd didn't win turning it back on and celebrating

Catching the train from Brig to Mill Hill back in the day and walking down with the away fans. Swaying on the Blackburn End as those higher up pushed us down. Watching matches with my Grandma and Uncle, both now gone. Celebrating at Ewood after winning the league. Singing the Speedie dived song coming back up the M1. Hendry at Wembley a long time ago. Friedals brilliance at Cardiff. Any save from Terry Gennoe. Any pass from Tugay. Any goal from Garner or Shearer. Taking my mother and my boy to the matches the last decade or so. Any away win. Watching the ground be re-developed. Jack Walkers tears of joy and tears of sadness. Any KD interview. Play off dramas under DM, Bobby Saxton's decency, Don Martin's penalties, Scotty Sellars dribbling and pin-point passing.

Are you reading Venky's? My favourite memory since you arrived will be of you leaving and taking all the chancers with you.

There's been some good ones with obviously the ultimate winning the Prem. For me though i think having started watching them in early 80's as a kid and being used to small crowds etc going to Wembley and winning the Full Members cup was unreal. Then winning promotion at Wembley in the play offs i still shudder at the feeling because i never ever thought it would happen. They are the ones that always stick out for me then of course the Prem title was quite surreal.

Stood on Blackburn end fence watching for the copper coming around who was going to tell us to get down. Spending my 6 week holidays hovering with my mates outside the old players entrance at the old Ewood....players would come and go all day..Patterson etc..they would send us to lings chippy or leavers for a pie for them and abottle of milk from trotters newagent...and tip us a bit for going...

Drinking Tottington * dry on the way to Wembley in '87, League Cup final, beating Burnley 5-0, Derby in the play offs and countless away days in the 80s.

I hope lads and lasses in their teens and twenties have as much fun following this grand old club as I have had.

* not the place near Bury, the place off the M1 north of London that I can't quite remember the name of!

The big win against Plymouth on the day Dalglish & Harford took over. That's when I knew we were going BIG after Jack became owner. Before that it was all speculation about Lineker and all the big names we tried to sign. When we got Dalglish I knew it was for real.

The day we won the championship. I didn't make it to Anfield. I watched in the Sir Charles Napier with a multitude of friends and fans. Steve Winstanley (RIP), The Landlord had attached loads of balloons in a net to the ceiling weeks before in prepararion of us winning it - they'd been up there for weeks. Shearer scored at Anfield, my pint went skywards! Final whistle at Upton Park I was standing on the table shouting 'champions, champions'. Then out on the streets around King Georges Hall outside the Jubilee - a sea of fans celebrating. I still get goosebumps remembering ....

The folllowing season when Man Ure came to town. The shared Darwen End with home and away supporters. Singing 'Who's the champions now scum, who's the champions now' to the tune of 'Tie me kangaroo down' at half time. All the missiles they threw over the partition - pies, pints....

Hope we can get back there someday - it will take a miracle now though.

Seeing Jordan Rhodes collecting his player of the season trophy, reminded me of the real impact players that we have all loved at Ewood.

Shearer of course comes to mind, but would we ever have got into the play offs in '92 without the goals of David Speedie.

Away toPlymouth in the last match of the season; what a long journey that was, especially when I thought of the return trip if we had lost. We had to win that game to secure 6th spot, a great away following and Speedie delivered with a hat trick.

Derby at home in the first leg of the semi. Two nil down in no time. Sellers free kick and a wonder strike from Newell to make it 2-2 by half time. Speedie with two more in second half to drive us all wild.

The final, the longest 90 minutes of my life but yet again Speedie was the hero when he was felled in the box with a brutal tackle.

He may not be the best player to have worn our shirt but he was without doubt a very important one in that historic year. I was gutted when he went as part of the Shearer deal. He deserved better.

ALL the memories of being a Rovers fan Pre Venky's I cherish dearly.

Yep I honestly can't think of THAT many bad ones up until the last few years.

No matter how much they screw our club up though, nobody can ever steal our memories.

Yep, agree in principle but this is actual memories. Who could forget that fantastic strike by Bryan Douglas at Burndon Park? Kevin Herd picking the ball up just outside his own penalty area and slamoning through to score at Ewood. Shearer scoring two of the most wonderful goals ever seen at Selhurst park. Include Steve Read at Wigan? For a header, George Sharples at Ewood against Preston from a corner, he must have ran 30 metres to meet it. Anyone who witnessed these or know these, dream just dream! Bloody hell, got me going now, no sleep tonight!

I was too young for Anfied '95 and couldnt afford Cardiff in 2002.

So, in no order:

A cold Tuesday night in 2005. David Thompson. Charlton away. League cup. 35 yards out. I had Jack Straw jumping into my lap when that went in.

My first Ewood experience watching the likes of Hakan Suker, Damien Duff and Tugay beat Arsenal 2-0 in 2003.

The noise when Roberts equalised against Chelsea in the 2007 Fa Cup semi at Old Trafford.

Fulham away in 2004. The Amoruso, Stead and Cole show. Still the best game I've been to.

Friedel scoring at Charlton

This seasons Fa Cup tie at Arsenal. My fingernails haven't recovered.

Worthington Cup Final for sure.

Gotta mention the season where we beat Spurs away 4-0 on the last day to get in to Europe. 2003 I think? We had a hell of a team then.

Probably the best away performance I've witnessed..

On a funny side too, I remember being told off by a steward for taking pictures with a digital camera as its illegal to take photo's. imagine enforcing that now?

Vilnius away was pretty epic via Warsaw.
