[Archived] possible transfer targets summer 2013

We should get this done we seem to have no problems landing few transfers its when its a cash deal we can't seem to get it done for love nor (and more importantly) money

Can't get excited about it as I've never heard of the bloke, he sounds ok enough but its another harsh reminder of what the owners have done to us when teams like Swansea and Southampton are signing the likes of Bony etc and we go for Alex Marrow and Tommy Spurr

why have you got that quote as your signature when you constantly harp on about the past? We all know where we are, we all know how far we've fallen (the most overused phrase on here). It's not nice, nonody likes it.

As for never hearing of Spurr, even a fleeting acknowledgement that football exists outside the Prem would tell you that he has been highly thought of at both Donny & Sheff W. Being on a free doesn't equal cr*p.

In most cases a free transfer in the lower leagues does equal cr@p. my step sons a Sheff Weds season ticket holder and reckons he's ok, but no world beater.

Sadly this is the market we're in due to those rats in Pune.

Only in your opinion. I am sure people can see different things and retain an understanding of the game. Unless you are alone in your indepth understanding? ;)

Anyhow..........Is Spurr 26? Spent most of his career in league one......anyone notice a theme?

Haven't got the numbers to hand but he has spent the majority of his life at championship level not league 1.

You are correct. Just saw he's played for two league one clubs and assumed. Never heard of him though, but that's not always a bad thing.

At least he's a left back rather than the utility "jack of all trades master of none" we've been using

Seriously here as well Ricky. Asking me who I would sign is a very pointless comment because none of us know who would be available and willing to come here. It does seem to be the position of some posters though, that criticism isn't welcome. Well this is a message board and all viewpoints should be acceptable.

For me, The club should have looked around for the best manager available, but because Venky's didn't have the ability to do that, they settled for Bowyer, who's record as caretaker has been exaggerated IMO. I was sceptical about his abilities in the transfer windows - and I think that's showing now. To me, coaches, or coaches made up to managers tend to believe that they can bring in players of lesser talent and improve them enough to build a decent squad - just as Brian Kidd believed. That's inbred in them because that's what they've always done. The more experienced managers have a much better understanding of what's needed.

I don't see any ambition at Ewood this season. Venky's could do much better than they currently are doing, but appear to me as though they have simply run out of ideas and just don't know what to do. I don't see Bowyer as the man who's going to move Rovers forward, certainly not by bringing in free transfer signings from a very poor league one, or by signing ex rovers academy lads.

Negative? Yes, but that's what I think.

Yes, but on it's own, not enough.

Den I can see where you are coming from.

But look at it another way, if Bowyer keeps adding players who have played well in the championship, players like Taylor and now Spur who both performed well and would have be viewed as amongst their better players by their previous clubs then potentially you end up with a decent championship team with a decent chance.

Neither would be players that that there current teams wanted to lose. Spur performed better at Doncaster. The key is having some players of a higher standard technically such as Rochina, Nunes, Dunn who can do something a little different. If the rest of the team is solid and hard working it allows those type of players a little more freedom. It is still critical we get in a higher standard cm though.. a midfield including Marrow, Lowe and judge at the same time maybe just ok against the weaker championship teams but wont be good enough against the better teams. The standard of cm we have been going after is encouraging, that fact we haven't managed to get them is worrying.

SW fans say he's a CB, and as a left back not as good.

Your first point is fair enough, you got me there but its hard to let go of what should be.

I hope he'll be an asset to us but can't see him being the difference maker we need, he should help plug a hole though.

Just land us that midfielder Mr Bowyer

yes, the post from the Sheff Weds messageboard doesnt make happy reading - "caught out of position", "cant defend the back post", "short of pace", "really a centre back but does a shift at left back"..........ominously familiar - a bits and pieces player rather than a first name on the teamsheet 'proper' left back.

First choice starting eleven to be specialists please, subs are allowed to be versatile.

Is it really so difficult to fill that position? its getting like picking the goalie in the school team, - over the season everyone has to have a go.

Well Shef Weds are always skint so he'll have been on shirt buttons for wages. That will be why we've signed him. Hopefully he'll be a steady championship left back but he sounds like a left sided Bradley Orr :(

Playing style and ability wise Spurr seems like a left sided Orr to me(hopefully without the attitude) not a bad thing, he has also been made captain a few times in the past and we defiantly could do with more leaders. Solid signing.

EDIT- just noticed tomphil has spotted the similarities with Orr at the same time ad me(but with the opposite feelings towards it haha)

Yes I've read that too and have noted that there are more positive posts than negative. You cherry pick the negatives if you wish. I'll wait and judge for myself when I attend the matches. A few posters on here should just go and slit their wrists and leave the rest of us in peace.

Not another left back filler. We have a team of utility men

Surprised you have not already slit your wrists. At least it would relieve us of your negativity.

Not referring to you TJ

Again before the lad has even put a shirt on there is a stream of derogatory comments, Jesus Christ give it a rest. Oh and while I'm at it instead of going off what SW fans are saying why don't you give him a chance to show us what he can do and give him a warm rovers welcome (if he has signed).

It's not negativity AL...........ITS A FACT

We have a team of utility players who are average at a few positions but masters of none. It's showed last season and it will likely show again this. It's called reality. You may want to come back to it now and again.

I don't think you can describe all of Bowyers signings as utility players. Taylor is a wide midfield player who performed well in the championship before we signed him. Spur is a decent left back - we are trying to sign him to play as left back. Bonus that he has played as a cb. Both were well liked and well rated by their previous fans. I admit the jury is out on Marrow and Judge.
