LeChuck Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 We have to think further than just making do or just going up through the play offs this season, with the way the squad has been watered down if we do get promoted we will need to spend 100 million + or spend an eternity imitating a yoyo. It cannot be a case of such and such a player will do good in the championship but would be useless in the premiership. That's not true at all. You get to the PL and sort yourself out once you get there. The likes of Swansea and Norwich have almost replaced their entire starting XIs since getting promoted.

rhodie Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 We'd need 10 players bought for more than our record transfer purchase to stay in the Premier League? Really?!? We`re starting from scratch again. That's not true at all. You get to the PL and sort yourself out once you get there. The likes of Swansea and Norwich have almost replaced their entire starting XIs since getting promoted. That`s exactly my point, we would need a complete rebuild.

The Sam-ites on here should recognise that he built a squad/team to get out of the Championship and once they got there sorted the wheat from the chaff and sold on the players who weren't good enough to play regularly in the Premiership. Some of them are still there but the likes of the Portugeuse lad from Bolton don't play too often.

Mani Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Yep and all our wheat is gone, we`re running on chaff. What is your opinion based on?? As far as I can see we haven't lost a half decent player in over 12 months now! We've invested in Rhodes, have several good youngsters in the ranks including Rochina, Henley and Hanley not to mention Edwards and O'connell who was linked to PL teams last week.. We have the likes of Etuhu, Goodwillies, Gones, Murphy and Pedersen on our BENCH!! The reason that we have under performed is not because of a lack of quality because we have more than enough for the championship...it's because the club is leaderless, it has no direction and no purpose! Managers are undermined and the club feels soul-less! Don't mistake our predicament for a lack of quality...far worse teams have been promoted!!
RockinRover Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Got to agree with Mani. Can't help but feel with some stability and a good manager these non-performers from last season will start performing. Etuhu and Murphy were good enough for Fulham before they came here. I think they've still got it but it needs to be managed out of them. It's all down to Bowyer to bring that stability and manage them right now. This squad is better than a lot of teams in the Championship, so we should be getting promoted or at least challenging with them.
rhodie Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 If we by any chance get promoted the quality of the squad we have now will not be good enough to stay in the premiership, there might be one or two that make the grade but that is it, how many times do we see teams getting promoted, pasting everyone for the first 5 or 6 games, then the wheels falling off. Being competent in the prem means being consistent and if they cant be consistant for an entire season in the championship they certainly are not going to do it in the prem, regardless of the management. Bowyer has a good man management style about him and as a temporary manager last season he had two good runs, but we still have to see whether he can get past the honeymoon period and keep our lot winning. We haven`t got rid of any decent players for a while now because the heart and soul of our team has already left, Murphy, Etuhu etc would still be in the prem if they were that good On paper we have the best team in the championship but last seasons table suggests differently when we talk about their abilities on the field. I seriously think we will need mega money if we get back to the prem just to stay there.

I think there's a lot of underperformers who have the potential to improve this season (Etuhu, King, Best, Rochina) add to that the sensible signings, then we SHOULD have a decent-ish team, providing Rhodes stays and the Boardroom circus doesn't continue.

neophox Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Best and Vaughan are two different players....Vaughan is a very Quick striker unlike Rhodes and scored 14 goals for Hudds last season. Would be a good addition to the squad. Voted Huddersfield player of the year last season: http://www.examiner.co.uk/huddersfield-town-fc/huddersfield-town-news/2013/05/20/86081-33353825/
AJW Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 weren't we linked with Lee Wallace of Rangers at one point last year ? .. not sure who was manager at the time but if Ollsson does go maybe he'll be looked at again

Many of the players you've mentioned would've been fine a few years ago. The core of the squad needs to be young, hungry players. We learned that last season.

Does Bowyer rate Morris and is Henley an option on left? Bowyer knows them both well. If Jose let Kane come back on loan he is the one playing on right side. Maybe Olsson wouldn´t be replaced with new left back. Does anyone know can Taylor play more positions than left midfielder?

Henley made his debut at Left back against Liverpool and played against Man U aswell. both away. Henley can play either full back positions but prefer Right back. You have got Markus Olsson and Morris aswell who can play left back aswell. we were linked with Crainey a couple of weeks ago. He is available on a free. Taylor can play either wing and maybe in a 3 man Centre Midfield.
The Rover of Finland Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Markus Olsson was brought because Martin needed company and didn't want a dog.
Backroom Mike E Posted June 19, 2013 Backroom Posted June 19, 2013 Could we not install Givet at LB? Rather than bring another in?
Ricky Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 There's no chance of him staying here another season.

DavidMailsTightPerm Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 Could pave the way for Rhodes to leave. Or Best or Goodwillie or Gomes
RibbleValleyRover Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 Vaughan would be too much of a risk in terms of injury especially at a club with poor fitness levels/coaching. If Norwich won't put up the money for Olsson then we should look elsewhere.
Ricky Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 QPR have just released Bothroyd. Did very well at this level with Cardiff and could be a very good foil for Rhodes.
