rovers11 Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 My guess would be Jones too. Or maybe Todd Kane coming back in on loan.
G Somerset Rover Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Yeah gotta be Jones, or Kane. Or maybe even Evatt? Not complaining at a new signing, but really do hope we get rid of some deadwood soon too.
adz4d2 Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Where's that from??? When did GB say we are getting someone in today??
sparky12 Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Kane is in Dubai so wouldn't expect it to be him, most likely Jones good signing if so
Backroom Mike E Posted June 21, 2013 Backroom Posted June 21, 2013 Hanley doesn't need anyone to tell him how to be a blood and guts defender. He needs someone to teach him when to be a blood and guts defender and when not to be. As Givet suffers from the same deficiency i'm not sure he has it in his locker to help Hanley. Both will have matches when they win every header, challenge or block and everyone will wet themselves about how great they are. But more often than not they leave themselves and the rest of the back four really exposed because they don't know when to challenge and when to hold their position. I'm always a bit suspicious of center halves who consistently have to make last ditch blocks and tackles. They usually find themselves having to because they were out of position in the first place. This is the area Hanley needs to improve on. Still, at least he's no Scott Dann. He's crap in the first tackle and isn't clever enough to sweep up either. Lost cause that one. Maybe that could be the thinking behind Short's appointment? He and Nelsen are the 2 people that spring to mind from the last decade who have that ability to both read the game and get stuck in

ABBEY Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Signing due today, according to Gary Bowyer. Don't care if its messi ... Venkysout .
Muddboy Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 How can we keep signing players (if this afternoon's player goes through, that will make four new faces so far this preseason) when we haven't shipped out any of the first team squad? The recent released list only contained names of academy/under 21's who were surplus to requirements so by my caulculations we're even more over budget than we were last season. Do the financial fair play regs not affect us this season?
JAL Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Why do you hate players who get picked from our academy, where Gary Bowyer knows more than most? Did the academy reject you as a kid or something?Purely based on what one sees on the pitch, do they do it, or dont they, for the team to get that winning result.

Do the financial fair play regs not affect us this season? I can only guess that we have room on the wage bill to bring in free transfers with the likes of Bentley, Kazim-Richards, Sandomierski, DJ Campbell and Rekik no longer here. The arrivals so far combined won't be on the same wages that we were paying to Kazim-Richards. I know we've got a few back from loan but I think the wages of those brought in on loan would have far surpassed those going out. I can't see us spending money on transfer fees until we sell anyone though.
ABBEY Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Do the financial fair play regs not affect us this season?like venkys care about that.
Moderation Lead K-Hod Posted June 21, 2013 Moderation Lead Posted June 21, 2013 like venkys care about that. They'll have to, as our squad is far too bloated to tie in with that atm!!
sharpysharps Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Most likely gonna be Dave Jones I would say....although there is still talk of James Vaughan.
Boylerhaus Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Do the financial fair play regs not affect us this season? Not 100% on this but I thought I read on here that while FFP starts this year, sanctions are exempt the first year. So if we are fail to meet regulation next year we'll get hit but not this year. Remember thinking Murphy's contract will be up at that stage and it might be possible to pay off the likes of ethuhu to leave this year so their wages don't count for next year
OJRovers Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 I was slightly underwhelmed by Jones in the final games of last season, particularly after his great start at the club. I prefer Williamson. However, I think he's a decent signing and should be a good member of the squad for the Championship. What's going on with Murphy? Surely he's got to be on his way out.

I would say that something has got to give. Judge---Jones--Williamson---Taylor Is a possible starting 4 midfield, all either signed or given a new contract under Bowyer. With possibly Rochina, King or Dunny playing infront of those 4 it leaves Peds, Etuhu, Lowe & Murphy kicking their heels, with 3 of them on high wages. (No idea on Lowes wage tbh)
Mani Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Etuhu, Lowe, Jones and Williamson will compete for the two defensive CM spots..there's some miles in the legs there..then rely on the quality in front of them to create chances and score..Taylor, Judge, Dunny, Rochina and King should have the ammo to provide Rhodes and Best! Btw u fancy Best to come good if he can stay fit..
davulsukur Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Do we need 4 defensive midfielders on the books? As for Best, see how his pre season goes, he needs to get his head down and put some graft in. I think there are some goals in him but we will still rely heavily on Rhodes to stick it in the onion bag on a regular basis.
G Somerset Rover Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Judge---Jones--Williamson---Taylor Not a fantastic looking midfield on paper, but it wouldn't be shy of graft and hard work. A competitive midfield is something we lacked all season. Judge aside, we do need some creativity from somewhere though for Rhodes to thrive on.

(No idea on Lowes wage tbh) at Championship level, that is a decent midfield, with Rochina tucked in behind Rhodes. However, if we some how go up, then i cant see that midfield standing much chance. But for now, i suppose its okayish on paper, but will be interesting to see how they go the 1st 4 or 5 games. so we are just signing players, and letting nobody leave? Venkys sure love throwing money around, so can we all have some of that money? i would guess its one of Jones, Vaughn, or one of the Blackpool players we were linked with.. Evatt or Crainey. i would love us to make another attempt at Jerome Thomas, but i think he is joining a PL team?

But if we did get promoted we could get at least Murphy and Pedersen off the books. Then we'd have money to spend and room on the wage bill(~£80k pw) to bring in PL quality. Jones can do it a that level, so we'd look to reduce Judge/Williamson/Taylor to squad roles and bring in others to be first teamers. That's usually the route promoted clubs go for, get 5 or 6 first teams and keep the previous starting XI in the squad (then sell/release the players that were squad players in the league below). Having said that, still not convinced by that as a first choice midfield. I'd much rather have Taylor as a squad player and bring in a quality winger. I'd love another central midfielder as well but with Murphy, Etuhu and Pedersen still here we just can't afford it.
