JAL is from the Florentino Perez school of rating defensive midfielders (and goalkeepers, full backs etc), all about the goals. Here's what Perez said about Makelele when he left Real:

"We will not miss Makélelé. His technique is average, he lacks the speed and skill to take the ball past opponents, and ninety percent of his distribution either goes backwards or sideways. He wasn't a header of the ball and he rarely passed the ball more than three metres. Younger players will arrive who will cause Makélelé to be forgotten."

So coming back to this French player linked with Rovers are you suggesting then that hes as good as Makelele.

I think the argument is that because he isn't wanted by one of the world's richest clubs doesn't mean he isn't cut out for the Championship.

It was an analogy JAL, something not to be taken literally? Sometimes I have the feeling that you actually think that it's 1994...

But it doesn't mean he is, not that I know who he is. Remember Tim Sherwood? This league chewed him up and spat him out.

All the signings have been uninspiring but we'll only know for sure when the season kicks off.

It was an observation regarding how stupid it is to judge a defensive midfielder by his goalscoring record. Not very difficult point to grasp, surely.

That much is self-explanatory, but comparing ourselves with Monaco as a reason for not wanting a player is all kinds of daffy.

For me every type of midfielder unless thay are very special like Makelele should be able to defend and attack in equal measure otherwise we are weaker as a team.

How does that even make sense!?

I rarely post here, just been lurking for a long time lately. But I have to say that is the funniest thing I have ever read on this forum!

Reading you're recent posts we could sign Messi and you'd complain that you wanted Ronaldo Baz.

I know nothing about the french guy, all i want is proven quality. I see no harm in that?

Id much sooner sign 3 players of proven quality that will improve our side, than 7 or 8 risks. Its nothing against any of the players we have signed individually, I obviously wish them to be great signings. I just feel that currently we have a massive financial advantage over a lot of clubs in that league, but instead of using that to our advantage, we seem to be wasting it by having a squad of 30 1st team players.

Another season or 2 and we lose that advantage, thats when we maybe need to make that gamble on freebies, youngsters and people from lower leagues.

When people mention defensive midfielder it does absolutely nothing for me and just puts me off.

Understand tactics when an opposing team is strong down the middle and you want another player close to and in front of your central defenders, but other than that, with Jordan Rhodes lack of pace and DJ's ageing legs Rovers wont be able to sit deep and attack teams on the break by having defensive midfielders in the team. Thus, the central midfielders for Rovers this coming season for me have to be drivers in the team along with the full backs and wingers.

Every position should have a leader in it, a driver and a winner.

What an incredibly stupid post. Look at his post, read it, re-read it if need be. Understand what he is trying to say.

Then I scroll down to see you write this. So who else has this right to be 'special'?

That's a little more of a reasoned argument, JAL. You're saying we already have too many water carriers and not enough.... I can't remember the other half of the metaphor. What you said before that, however, was cosmically stupid.

with all due respect to bowyer, he isn't going to attract any decent player as he has no proven record as is a complete unknown so they only way he will make signings is mediocre lower league players or cast-offs from other clubs, therein we should not expect to be challenging for promotion let alone top half, we have no cash, fair enough but I don't see this team improved one iota from last season, its just been filled up with more squad players.

On paper it looks like that but these guys will be more hungry than some of our overpaid and underachieving "stars" who almost relegated us. Young, plenty of spirit, and a manager who hasnt done an Incey interview, grinned like a deer in the headlights or look like he is uncomfortable in his own shoes. This league is about commitment passion and grit. I feel that we are "fit for purpose' to coin a tired corporate term. I feel happier this year than i did last year.

I don't think we can assume that these players are hungry and have spirit just because they have been playing quite well in the lower leagues for years. They could have failed to make it previously because of a lack of hunger and spirit because that is often what singles out a top sportsman from the mediocre. Who knows until we have seen what they can do.

As Donald Sutherland said on Kelly's heroes many times, "whats with the negative vibes"
