It didnt look that fast last season in the championship, plus there was loads of mistakes being made by the players outhere. But hey, if people want to play with a defensive midfielder in a poor division then fine. Should have added that if the defenders cant stand alone and defend well, then maybe they need replacing if they need that extra protection.

Also it should be interesting to see if DJ and Best defend from the front for the team after GB's comments about how the team should operate.

It doesn't matter what league you are in, you can't just let everyone bomb forward and expect them all to be able to get back into position in a flash.

For want of not repeating myself, fully expect everybody in the team to be able to defend that why the last line is about DJ and Best defending from the front.

And you also want all defensive players to be able to attack. So a team of midfielders.

I wonder which manager tried that for the last 2 years? ;)

i don't always agree with JAL but i think he's spot on with this and Kenny's Team that won the league was a prime example of this , and before i see the words " but David Batty" Batty only played a handful of games the midfield was primarily Sherwood and Atkins with Warhurst as back-up , the front 2 and the 2 wide men were the hardest working players in the league and upto about Feb/March when we had a wobble we were scoring goals for fun

Blimey a conversation not about targets but positions.. IMO yeah defensive midfielders are a needed/essential these days, a good def midfielder (esp given the sports science behind fitness etc) are key they train to work in a specific way, would expect a central defender to be able to pass like the best midfielder.. each position has its training and strengths but most importantly years of experience (esp in terms of positioning) and as with every employee in most jobs they have their strengths and weaknesses. To expect a midfielder to be able to pass, tackle and be everywhere is plain daft you need balance and a defensive midfielder frees up the more attack minded chaps no end.

Just take a look at our most successful sides and those of the likes of Chelsea (Makele, Essien etc) , Everton (Fellini), ManU (Carrick, Ince et al), Arsenal (Viera et al).. hell look at the best Def midfielders.. Alonso (boy Arsenal missed him), Mascherano (liverpool have not been the same), Schwinsteiger, Toure, Cambiasso, De Jong, De Rossi.. Or even ourselves.. the Axe, Savage, Batty, Sherwood, Atkins, Flitty..

It's clear we need a new left back, a winger, another striker an a centre mid ! I'd go for cresswell from Ipswich as a left back. Best in the division by a mile. Sako at Wolves is available aswell. Get spearing sorted if he's interested an look to bring in a target man, someone like Kevin Doyle.

At lb, why not go with Henley (proven performer there) or O'Connell (also a budding talent) or Kilgallon?

Also Morris and Olsson has played there under GB. Not sure if Markus Olsson played league games at back four though. We desperately need atleast one CM who would be better than current choices. How did McEachran do at Boro?

Wolves want 4 mil for Sako and he wants PL football. Fulham wanted him. we got King, Nunes, Judge and Taylor who can play wide so don't think we need another winger

No to Doyle. we got enough Forwards at Rovers in Rhodes, Rochina, Best, DJ and King.

Cresswell would cost 3 mil or so. think that Wigan got quoted. so not thanks. think Kiko is favourite is the favourite according to Unleaded.

cant see Spearing wanting to come to Rovers. he waiting for PL team or Bolton.

I think we need a left back and Goalscoring midfielder

he played left back at Leeds away last season and scored aswell.

McEachran played very well for Boro when I seen him and would be very good loan signing but is he in Mourinho plans for the season I don't know

Just selected my fantasy team and Chelsea seems to have a very strong midfield. Essien could be like a new signing. They already outloaned Romeu and Mikel could be on his way out. Even after that McEachern wouldn´t make to the bench. There are PL clubs who could give him first team football.

Another Portugese kid is not the answer at left back. We do need a natural left back, as Morris is no better than back up, Henley is naturally a right back, Kilgallon is a centre back, O'Connell is also a centre back and a kid, and Markus is barely a footballer, but you don't want him near your own net.

Don't agree that we need a goalscoring midfielder, I think Judge will fulfill that role, we need someone to dictate the midfield and control it, Spearing would have been good, as would Jones.

I see judge as beig back up to rochina, we need three players a lb, cm, and a rm if we get decent signings in this area I think we could achieve the play offs.

What?!?! We'll win the league no problem, we're unbeaten in pre-season lad!

Because Henley is injury prone an a RB aswell. Not good enough to get us out this league. Morris is back up at best. O'Connell is a centre back an him an Edwards will probably be loaned out again as its clear bowyer doesn't wana risk anything with the kids too early !

we cant cos off the new Football league financial fairplay rules coming in this season. so where are we getting the money from???

here are the rules http://www.football-league.co.uk/page/FLExplainedDetail/0,,10794~2748246,00.html

BTW, Henley is good enough for Rovers and will mainly play at Left Back with Kane at Right Back. 2 attacking full backs.

Those in bold have put in some very good performances at LB. I'm not sure 'natural' position really matters in some cases. Henley is equally adept at both FB positions (actually playing BETTER at LB imo). Re: Kilgallon, in a positional sense, he is Givet, who we were happy to have at LB ever since he arrived.

Givet...........who we were happy to have at LB ever since he arrived.

Where we? He was crap there and was regularly skinned and embarrassed and spent most of his time drifting infield. He was another make do shoved in there because the manager at the time couldn't be arsed to find a proper full back....we even converted Olsson to fill that role and he was still better suited playing elsewhere.
