Although I can understand Rhodes would want to jump ship considering the state we're in and I can also appreciate without him we'd be relegated, plus that he has a lot more potential than where he currently is...

(Here comes the but) But, Rovers took a gamble when they splashed the cash for Rhodes and I think for that alone he surely owes it to us one more season and a (long) shot at promotion.

Seems to me that the Rhodes £8m was a one season gamble to get back to the PL with the insurance that we'll at least get our money back.

Invent a story that he's not happy, like many better players before him and back to Plan F. Or is it Plan R?

Stuart you may have hit the nail square on the head, with his record he's a good signing for anybody in the Championship and quite a few in the Premier League.

We are Venkys where money's concerned, Venkys can afford to buy 10 of him if they wanted to.

You're right about the 3 stooges being able to mess up nearly anything, but in this case we're holding all the cards. Long contract + no release clause = big fee. If we don't get a big fee, Rhodes sulks for a month or 2, realises he's stuck here until he convinces someone he's worth £10m, and then gets back to doing what he does. Either outcome works for us, we've no reason whatsoever to sell him cheap.

I think the opposite personally. Either we're getting a lot of money to strengthen the squad as a whole and stop it from being a 1-man team, or we're keeping that 1 man. I don't see how this can end up being a bad deal for us. We took a big gamble on Rhodes last season, £8m and 5 years would have ended up costing us a fortune if he hadn't been as good as everyone said. Well he was, and we're now in a strong position because of that gamble.

The oddity of Rhodes aside. What gives you any reason to think that Venkys will strengthen our squad?

Every transfer window has seen us weaker and this one doesn't look like bucking the trend given the previous level of our signings so far.

He has proved himself in every division from League Two to the Championship and has won 2 promotions.

Therefore my feeling is that someone is bound to take a chance on him and you couldn't blame the lad for leaving this circus. As fans we all want him to stay, but is staying at BRFC good for him?

Depending on how bad Venky's want to balance the books will depend on how much he is allowed to leave for. Any bids that are more than we paid for him and I think he'll be gone.

Yeah, I'd agree with all of that.

Seeing as the Rhodes conversation with india only happened late last night no need for a catch up , it's easy to speculate what might happen as its 50/50 stay or go .

However until last night the club had no reason to think Rhodes would have one or two issues which are bothering him .

Saying that though on the no pressure to sell anyone, that remains .

If players want to leave Rovers won't keep hold of them , they want everyone squad wise singing from same hymn sheet .

Shame about the boardroom!!

Got a feeling that Cardiff might take a gamble on Rhodes, their owner already said about 25 million available for transfers, so less than half on Rhodes could be seen as a good investment, considering finishing 17th next season could bank about 70 million in prize money.

what are the issues bothering him and who does he have a problem with? If you know say so, if not whats the point in winding people up?

Suspect Rhodes wants to have a crack at the premier league , not a hope in hell of us reaching it , so a move is his only option ...

He kept us up single handedly last season and knows he will have to do the same again !

This thread was started in May.

http://www.brfcs.com/mb/index.php/topic/29434-dj-campbell-is-here-next-season-too/

I had heard the same when I was in London earlier in the year. At the reserves many of the more knowledgable fans expected DJ to be Rhodes replacement.

here is DJ Campbell saying that he might have to leave QPR with 12 months leave on his contract

Rhodes will go. I don't think many really believed he'd stay. But he won't be going to Hull. Uncle or no uncle. A big move beckons and I think he deserves the chance. To think a striker capable of scoring around the 30 goal mark would stay at Rovers with all our baggage is mad really.

Thanks.

I'd seen that market, thought you were just on him leaving, not the potential destination.

You backed him to go to Hull then?

Come on Merce, tell us who you've backed him to go to, there's no harm in that.

Wouldn't want you to be branded an after timer when it happens.

Avoiding financial ruin aside, i cant see any benefit to flogging Rhodes. He scored for fun despite the best efforts of several managers to put him in a formation which didn't help him at all.

One of the top scorers in the league last year, we should be looking to build the team around him as opposed to bringing in 2 average plodders on high wages like Best or Campbell in the hope they can bag 15 or so goals each. Get the team set up and bring in the correct players to get the best out of Rhodes.

I'll take a guess at West Ham.

I'd be very suprised. Rhodes just isn't an Allardyce type of player imo. He's hardly target man material is he? Also he's no way as good as Nolan at playing deeper behind a target man.

According to Nicko, Hull don't have the money to pay rovers what they want. trying to bid with a couple of players in.

I

After saddling us with the hopeless Cameron Stewart all I can say is buggeroffBrucie.

Obviously somebody's gotten to him then. This is a road we've been down many times before.

Its all been pretty predictable from the start of the summer regarding Rhodes and personally I don't think goings on at the club are unsettling him and I don't think Venkys would be displaying a lack of ambition etc if they let him leave.

From his point of view he has to leave if the offer comes in cause a 23-year old striker who can score 30 goals in the Championship, can't stay at a bottom half team.

Indeed and imo his value will never be higher than it is now.

(Here comes the but) But, Rovers took a gamble when they splashed the cash for Rhodes and I think for that alone he surely owes it to us one more season and a (long) shot at promotion.

I've a feeling some on here might suggest that you are being incredibly naive.

remember last years rumour over Rhodes..Bling Venky bought Rhodes from his own dosh with a view of making a profit .If he goes for 10 million then 2 million aint a bad return for a 12 month gamble.

Not correct. £8m transfer fee, £2m in wages so far, sell on fee to Huddersfield. If they sell for £10m then they'll make a loss on the whole package. Sell for £12m and they break even on it. Sell for £15m and they make a slight profit.

£12m plus £3m add ons will probably get him. Don't see Hull paying that.

In a way thats really as it should be for any club Abbey, cos there will be plenty of occasions when players take money with them. For every Shearer or Sutton there will be a Dahlin, Jansen, Cole etc.

Surely Jansen and Cole brought value through promotion and a cup win, respectively?
