[Archived] Clearout begins at Rovers

Recommended Posts

Orr is a poor player with a worse attitude but he's nowhere near the worst we've seen its hyperbole in the extreme

No different to saying Bowyer "loves Rovers". Hyperbole is everywhere these days.

Hell, it's used 24/7 on Skysportsnews :D

If I was Bowyer I would make some surprising decisions regarding the squad.

For instance I believe when Robinson's fit we should keep him and rotate him with Kean.

Kean still has a lot to learn and he could learn a bit from Robinson, especially an on form Robinson if we were to ever see that again.

I'd also keep Rosado and move him inside as he seems to be able to hold the ball well and is quite creative but doesn't have the pace required to be a winger in this league.

Also once Cairney goes back in January we'll have no creativity behind Rochina / Dunn so we could really do with a backup creative midfielder ala Rosado.

King meanwhile really doesn't come across as a winger to be so I'd make him a striker as he's built for that and has the pace to get behind defences.

After all that I'd keep a squad that looks something like this..

GK: Kean, Robinson, Eastwood

RB: Kane, Henley
LB: Spurr, Morris

CB: Dann, Songo'o, Hanley, Kilgallon

CM: Lowe, Marrow, Cairney, Evans, O'Sullivan, Rosado

CAM: Rochina, Dunn

RM: Judge, Taylor

LM: Nunes

ST: Rhodes, Best, DJ Campbell, King

Then I'd sign another winger like McClean on loan and sell all the names not mentioned above.

If your doing an all time worst team, surely you need 10 games plus to make a fair assessment.

One (<10) hit wonder team

Enckleman

Nolan - T.Pedersen - Berner

van Heerden - Vogel - Basturk - Witschge - de Pedro

Rigters - Thomas

I rated Vogel when he played towards the backend of Hughes's last season but he never got a chance to play under Ince who preferred the likes of Andrews.

Yes, I know that and in some ways agree with you. My argument is with the often aired view that all the higher wage earners have to go. The bottom line is that the individual wages aren't a problem - it's the overall annual wage bill that matters to the club. There are plenty of squad players signed over the last couple of years who will never play for us again who need to be moved on in order to lower the wage bill. People wanting rid of Pedersen because they think he's not good enough any more, have a valid point. However, to bring his wages into the formula, isn't.

Basically, reduce your wage bill by removing the worst players, not the most expensive.

All very trivial I admit.

Good post Den, entirely agree.

That's the crux of the argument I've been having with you over the last few years though. To flip it round, just because someone is one of your highest earners does not automatically place them amongst your best players. Losing a high earner that's a key player Shearer/ Duff/Bentley (at his best) Yakubu/Jones/Samba/Hoillet is catastrophic. Losing a high earner that is past their best and on the downgrade, Salgado/Roberts/ Nelsen/Emerton/Diouf etc is sound business practice and should be manageable.

Taking that process one stage further, Pedersen Givet Robinson Dunn Etuhu are not even regular first teamers on the downgrade, they're unlikely to feature much if at all. So on that basis they can be classed as amongst our worst players and highest earners. Sadly we're likely to be stuck with most of them until their contracts expire.

How can you agree entirely and then list a set of players that mostly have never been among our worst?

Under Allardyce and the team that finished higher than any Rovers team will now for a good number of years, Salgado was our best right-back, Roberts our 2nd-3rd best striker, Nelsen our captain, Emerton 2nd best in a number of different positions, Diouf best at right-wing.

And of the current crop, well its arguable with Pedersen, we've got a lot of average left-sided players, Olsson, King, Judge, I'd argue none have the crossing, heading, through-ball, finishing attributes that Pedersen has, all have more speed though. Givet would be our best defender if he had the right attitude. Dunn is our best midfielder, he's just injured an awful lot. Agree on Etuhu.

The worst players in our squad are the collection of Portugeesers that Kean signed and the unimpressive latest batch from the academy. Basically the guys Bowyer has sent out on loan.

I would defo let Pedersen leave/sell him. not a player we need now. Been a very good player for us and he has been very loyal to Rovers. But he is not suited to the Championship.

Hopefully Orr will be gone this week. Talking to a Blackpool fan today and he heard that Blackpool are interest in Orr as they need a right back.

I would let Givet go now we have bought in Songo'o.

Rosado, Formica, Slew can leave.

and hopefully Robinson and Etuhu will leave aswell

Chaddy, where do you think the Rovers are going to get the money to pay these players off? The Rovers gave them contracts and the players are not going to leave without the cash that the contract gives them. Sadly, no other club, due to Financial Fair Play, will be in a position to offer them anywhere near the wages we pay. The odd one might go but I suspect the others will remain until we pay them off as we did with Murphy and Gomes. There are any number of players who are being paid who are surplus to requirements - do we really need six goalkeepers for the first team and Under-21's? - but it's not as easy as saying "let them go".

QPR will be in a similar state to us, if not worse, where FFP is concerned.

The difference with QPR and many of these clubs is that their income streams will be much greater than ours. Whilst low ticket prices are supporter friendly, combined with low gates, they are not what you need for FFP. QPR, Leeds and others can charge an awful lot more than the Rovers and still have larger gates. The big city clubs will always be more attractive in terms of sponsorship than the Rovers. Whilst these might not seem important they are factors which will help to increase the gap between the Rovers and the bigger Championship clubs.

That's true of Leeds, but QPR's ground only holds 16 thousands or so....

Davies shades Grabbi as worse (for us). IIRC Grabbi tried hard for us but was unlucky, then there were the stories that Souness had signed the wrong player on the tape... for sheer uselessness it's hard to look past Modeste, though.
