Sam Billings is in the mix to replace Root. I read that somewhere yesterday, probably the BBC.

It kind of more than mildly surprised me but I think Stokes has enough issues without the poisoned chalice too.

Broad and Anderson, with the benefit of hindsight, did well to give this disaster a swerve.

If a team scores runs so sparsely and collapses with such regularity it doesn't matter who the bowlers are ... they aint going to win matches.

Is Jack Leach really the best English spinner?

Next England cricket captain: Joe Root's time is up, the ECB should send for Sam Billings (inews.co.uk)

Billings would deffo be a left field appointment I spoken and posted about yesterday, similar to my suggestion of Tom Abell from Somerset. Maybe Stuart Board could do the job for the Summer test series as short term appointment 

The decision of stripping Root of the captaincy and who will be appoint as test captain will be decide by whoever gets appoint as England director of cricket and Test coach.

A different article which also said Billings would have been on the WI tour but the 'selectors' didn't want a ''Captain in waiting'' also in the dressing room. I suppose there will be a lot of such speculation.

I also thought that Billings has a bit of a history with inappropriate comments in the past.

I agree though that Root's time as Captain is up and he should be left to his batting.

Billings is 30 and has played one match in his Test career. If they're considering him for the captaincy the cupboard must be bare

I can't see that being true cos the selectors were Andrew Strauss and James Taylor. 

Strauss has said that Root's future would be decide by the new director of cricket whoever that is. It does appears to be between 4 candidates which have been reported has Durham's director of cricket Marcus North, Ed Smith, Rob Key and Sri Lanka's director of cricket Tom Moody. Which of those 4 choices would be the right candidate to become the new Director of Cricket for the Eng;and?

I can't see Billings being the replacement for Root when that decision happens. But the candidates within the squad look like Ben Stokes, Stuart Board and Left field choice Alex Lees(who has captain experience with Yorkshire and with the England Lions.

Strauss need to interview in the next 2 weeks to appoint a new England director of cricket by end of April whether it be Ed Smith, Marcus North, Rob Key or Tom Moody. Then we need a National Chief selector and Test head coach appointing within 2 weeks. Then we can sort out the England test captain situation before the New Zealand series

Atherton, Hussain, Compton, Harmison all saying after today test match loss that Root should be replace as Test Captain. 

2 names I have seen mention today and they are Ben Stokes and Stuart Board to replace Root. We need to speak to Stokes about where he is mentally and whether he wants to take on the captain challenge. If not then give Board it for summer then reassess after the Summer test series against New Zealand, India and South Africa. 

If Alex Lees can step up into the captain if he can perform in the summer and be the long term captain

Mark Nicholas like Rob Key and Michael Atherton are media types. Just because they talk a good game kin the newspapers and on TV and wireless why would they make a good administrators?

Get someone in from outside the closed and introspective English game, an Antipodean or South African, someone with practical experience to tear down the walls of the rotten edifice of county cricket and rebuild it.

cos all 3 of them know what changes need to county structure, How England should play, appointing 2 head coaches and the test captain appointment. 

Strauss had only worked in the media before he got the role and look at the improvement that happened. 

England have 5 key decisions to make before the New Zealand test and white ball series and the first one of them is who is Strauss going to appoint as The new Director of cricket. I'm sure plenty of people have applied and would have like Mike Hesson to have applied but he is not interested in the role. So out of the people that the media have reported applied for the job I would go for either Durham's director of cricket Marcus North or Ed Smith. I hope someone like Paul Farbrace has applied as I think he has good ideas and knows the international and county game. Whoever is appointed as Director of cricket need to appoint an new National selector, new test coach, new white ball coach and sort of the test captaincy future whether they back Root or moved to new captain.

A terrific effort from the England team in the Women's World Cup. After losing their first 3 games and being on the very brink of elimination, they have turned things around in superb style and have just absolutely smashed the Saffers in the semi final. Bring on the Aussies in the final now.

Yes, a good effort by England against a superb Aussie team who have been in a different class above all the other countries. The main stumbling block today was the dropped catches, especially Healy on 41. This is the area of the game England need to improve dramatically on in order to get to the standard the Aussies show in every game they play. The other area is the top 5 batters need to be more consistent. If you take away the scores of Healy and Sciver, the difference was really the 60+ runs each of the No. 2&3 Aussie girls scored. None of the England batters went beyond the twenties. It’s always disappointing to lose against the old enemy whatever the format is, but there is no denying that the Aussies thoroughly deserved their victory today. Throw another Yabby on the barbie.

Bumble’s earned the opportunity to say what he wants to say in my opinion. It just sounds to me that the removal of the other long term sky pundits has rattled him. It was a better commentary box with those guys IMO.

Surely Strauss and Harrison are close to appointing a new director of English cricket and I'm hoping for an appointment in the next 2 weeks so we can sort out the roles of national selector, test head coach and odi/20twenty head coach. Plus Root's captaincy future

Joe Clarke from Nottinghamshire
