A "positive" attitude is fine .... but not all the time. Sometimes pragmatism is required, such as now when England need primarily to make a decent score in order to avoid defeat. Throwing wickets away with reckless shots with more than 2 days to go isn't positive, it's downright stupid.

England may win the match from here (or may not) but the declaration will never make sense to me. Two batters with their eyes in, tired bowlers after a long day, and possibly 50 runs or more given away

Agreed. In the context of the first innings conditions and root, one of finest batsmen ever produced, already well past 100 scoring freely with Robinson no mug with the bat and then jimmy more than capable of holding out at an end. Will never know but I really think there was at least 50-100 runs there. The risk vs reward of declaring was high risk to little reward.

Stokes can take a lot of the adulation for the success of baz ball but if it doesn’t go our way he’ll need to accept the lions share of blame for not putting on those runs.

That might be it for the day - was it as dark as some are making out?

Oh yes, can’t see this starting again today, but the wind has picked up and could blow this through.

England under Stokes will continue to play the same way, being positive with the declarations and want to win games. They not interested in Draws. Stokes's declaration looks right now. They need to play attacking now.

How have we wasted it?

Because its runs and time we chose not to accept and can't get back.

Ali fined 25% of his match fee for using a spray to try to protect his blistered finger, which is a mess. He didn't tell the umpires so that was a bit silly when playing the Sandpapers.

That declaration is starting to look more suspect as our openers play  shots usually seen when giving your keeper and slips catching practice.

Time for another Root masterclass and for Stokes the batsman to turn up.

A little unfair @AllRoverAsia, the conditions were perfect for Cummins and Boland at that point with movement due to overcast conditions, but nonetheless they're out and we need to battle back today as you say, in what looks like much favourable conditions for batting.

Just on a side note, me and you have had many years following the ashes on here, mostly me trying to stay awake when played in Australia or you running to the shop for another bottle of beer when played over here!

These days I'm as dry as a bone, my halcyon days have gone .....  hence I'm just about still here to enjoy another Ashes and see proper cricket......

Talking of which I caught the Lance DLS T20 win whilst it rained in the Test so have only seen replays of how Crawley and Duckett went, playing their somewhat familiar shots.

Thank goodness for cricket, it's kept me away from the summer circus of the transfer thread at brfcs.com and my swearing is down at least 80%.

I hope the weather is kind at the Test, another good days viewing starts soon.

Ducket went the same way in both innings. He looks like he’s batting in divers boots.

I was at Edgbaston yesterday, and the conditions were perfect for the bowlers after the rain delay

It is just England's luck. That said, both Duckett and Crawley should have left everything not on the stumps. Everyone could see the massive rain cloud coming over and the wind had started to swirl. Bet that lot couldn't believe their luck

The Bairstow stumpings / dropped catches may cost us. We could have had some more hours batting in good conditions. The weather has turned now, and even today in Brum you'd like to be a bowler, so I think the pitch will have a bit more life in it

Reverse ramp attempt by Root on the first ball of the day - which went over the top of the stumps

Entirely pre-conceived shot and totally reckless

This isn't bold, attacking cricket - it's stupidity

England are trying to remain positive and win the game. We won't play for draws.

I think some people including some on here won't like the way England will play but they won't change tactics and rightly so. they went to entertain the public and won't play negative.

It's not entertaining at all seeing a great batsman like Root charge down the pitch and get stumped when yards out of his crease as if he was in T20

Suicide in not painless.

The Aussies have great bowlers and fielders and they bat deep and are in the driving seat now.

Much depends on Stokes and Bairstow.

I really like the new tactics and attitude, but I appreciate there are times when it needs ‘reining in’ and taking account of conditions/the match situation.

I actually love it when we are getting 5 RPO in a Test especially against the World Champions, and they are currently the best team all round.

Chucking your wicket away is an entirely different matter.

If we can get this to a 300 lead I'll still fancy us

The rain forecast tomorrow morning will give us every advantage in the morning session

We need to try and bat the day out though. Ali and Robinson need to produce something brilliant here imo
