Cos the pitch was green and overcast. Ideal conditions to bowl but we didn't bowl well enough in those conditions.

Wood is not fit enough to play otherwise he would have played this game as Stokes confirmed pre match.

No its not a season too far but he hasn't had ideal bowling conditions

Surely you can see the contradiction.

What contradiction?

The conditions seemed perfect for bowling. England weren't at the races.

I really enjoy Bazball but this Australian team includes the best 3 test batters in the world and the England attack is the worst for many decades.

1. The fact we didn’t bowl well doesn’t alter the fact the conditions were ideal.

2. Therefore Anderson clearly has had ideal conditions to bowl in.

3. Therefore that can’t be used as an argument against him being  over the hill*

* Just to be clear, I don’t think he is over the hill.

Edit to add - I agree with most of the rest of your post, the bit I disagree with is that it’s our worst attack for a decade (don’t ask me to name a worse one though!)

1. Who said conditions weren't ideal?

2. I didn't mention Anderson.

3. Who said Anderson is over the hill?

4. Did you quote the wrong post or are you on your own little planet?

I don't follow cricket as keenly as I once did but I find it staggering that Anderson still gets in the squad, surely we have better options?

You asked me what the contradiction in Chaddy’s post was - I was just trying to explain.

Contrary to the spirit of Bazball the convicts failed to declare in their first innings. I wonder why. England facing a rearguard action from the off, no silly shots or giving away wickets please

Apart from Root do you think any other player from this England team would get in the Aussie X I?

I was thinking exactly that a few minutes ago!  Certainly no English bowler would.

Of the batters--yes to Root and also to a fit Stokes which we may well never see again.

In reality the gap between the 2 sides is large. Home advantage and fanatical support might get us over the line but its unlikely.

Brooks would.

I'd wager Foakes wouldn't be far off either. Carey is an exceptional wickey, but the truth is Foakes is the best in the world. It is a criminal decision he is not in

Pope on his day can knock it around with the best of them too. But with their middle order he wouldn't get in at the moment

Maybe a fit Stokes for Green too

We don't have a bad side, openers not counting, but seem to bottle it against the Aussies

I think if we go into 2nd innings having scored 400 we become favourites. We love a chase

Setting itself up nicely for Saturday and Sunday - of which I have tickets again 🙂 Going down London tomorrow night, bit of Lion King in theatre to keep her happy, followed by 2 days at Lords. Perfect weekend

I think that throughout this series our problem is bowling them out twice 🤔

True. The Aussies have a superb batting line up and bat deep, Cummins is a revelation and Lyon can do attack, prone though to throw his wicket away chasing runs like today, or bat long defensively.

Watching England currently easing along at 5 an over begs a question to you guys.

Do we think that T20 cricket and the IPL has made the modern cricketer better players than they otherwise would have been? It was the ruination of cricket when it first came onto the scene.

So many of these lads can now play either game. It doesn’t look such a massive change moving between the different formats. So my answer would be yes, it has improved players, it’s far more attractive to watch.

@den

I love Bazball! It's probably true that shorter versions of the game have added skills to the traditional test format.

However in the Ashes winning is everything and it will be interesting how we fare in this series. My prediction is a 4-0 loss.

As I write Crawley has thrown his wicket away, absolute stupidity and unprofessional 😕

Crawley given his wicket away - the stupidity of the Bazball mindset. There's no "excitement" in poor cricket.  It's a 5-day game. What's the rush? Sir Geoffrey would have set his stall out to bat for a day and a half, and it was fascinating to watch a master craftsman at work. Each to their own I suppose, but Bazball to me typifies a generation isn't prepared to do the hard slog.

What England have done is take back the initiative. Crawley's wicket was stupid again, but that attacking intent has put us well on track to win our first batting session yet again.

You expect Pope and Duckett to now bat the day out. I think this is where "Bazball" has to adapt ever so slightly. It is all well and good going out guns blazing, but at times we need to reign it in.
