thenodrog Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Thats the problem though is'nt it, none of us can speak for America, but we have had there greedy, violent culture pushed down our throats for decades, via tv and cinema, whilst our politicians kiss their arses and follow them into wars at the drop of a hat. One fact that is quite shocking, is that the yanks spend more on weapons than the rest of the world put together. Well if world history hadn't worked as it did and it wasn't the septics brand of Democracy who influenced us post WW2 it would have been the Russians and we'd have been part of the Warsaw pact under mass murderer No 1 Joe Stalin, and the alternative twist if neither the above then German would have become the language of the world and naziism the politics under mass murderer No 2 Adolph Hitler. Which alternative would you have preferred West Yorks Rover?

thenodrog Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Please don't do that ever again!! Just the mention of his name brings back a flood of long suppressed memories, and still makes my blood run cold. It seems the old Schoolteacher Priests at St Mary's Catholic College still hold an everlasting grip of terror over their ex pupils.......... ......... So it's all true then!!
wolfie Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 I was 10 in 1965. I remember Blackburn much farther back when we had industry and jobs were plentiful. Walk through the town back then and it was rare to see men during the day cos they were all at work, and most of those you did see were on nights. Mothers picked their kids up from school on foot, people packed into pubs and churches and the community was much closer. The average monthly mortgage was usually covered out of one mans weekly pay packet. The quality of the shops in the town were better with no scummy £shops and stores specialising in used games and assorted cheap tatt. Sure there were still dickheads, scroats and hardmen about but the entire town was self sustainable and there was an air of pride about the place, nowadays it just seems to live off central govt hand outs. That was when there were jobs to go to, Gordon, before the Torys smashed the manufacturing base and turned us into a service economy.

I too remember those days Gordon, unfortunately Thatcher's government thought mass unemployment was a price worth paying, they just left millions to rot on benefits, even to the point of suggesting to the long-term jobless, that they should sign-on the sick, where many remained for years or until they retired. Thats when the real benefits culture kicked in !

Which alternative would you have preferred West Yorks Rover? Going back a bit far there are'nt you Gordon, I was talking about Reaganomics and Thatcherism (same thing really) Besides everything the yanks did in WW2 was for their own benefit ( took them long enough to get involved) Thank God we had uncle Joe and the Red Army to sort-out Adolph in the end. I still say the Americanisation of the world was not a good thing and it was'nt a question of them or the Ruskis it did'nt need to be either IMO. and the towns population in the mid 60s was what? Virtually the same as it is now, give or take a thousand.
Al Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Please don't do that ever again!! Just the mention of his name brings back a flood of long suppressed memories, and still makes my blood run cold. Holy Joe was brilliant. I used to love his tuck shop.

Just about an average human lifetime is a blink of an eye in history. Careful what you wish for. Going back to the kick point of where we are today, WW2...... "Thank God we had uncle Joe and the Red Army to sort-out Adolph in the end." http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/historic_figures/stalin_joseph.shtml So thats Stalin and Hitler both held responsible for 20-40 million deaths or the Septics responsible for Elvis, Woodstock and The Simpsons? Is it still Dictatorship over Democracy then for you WYR?
rigger Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Look I'm being honest, myself an friends are taking flares an smoke bombs to away games starting at derby, is this really guna @#/? people off ? They'll be set off when we take the lead, it's not guna be a every 10 minute thing So that's on a par with, letting off bangers and chucking ticket rolls onto the pitch in the 70's. That was mainly done by ten to twelve year olds. So, you are just following a very old trend. I doubt it will @#/? anyone off, most won't even notice.

I remember a few bangers going off at Sheffield United and someone nicking a policemans helmet back in the 80's. ' Propa Nawty '
adopted scouser Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 JK89 is wearing flares at a football match ? 70's hooligans need platforms and a feather cut an 'all
Ewood Spark Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 I remember seeing SMC games master Tommy Duckworth watching an SMC pupil put a window out on a train. Death would have been easier for that pupil Good job it wasn't Joe Stewart Never understood how he ended up in the Marist 'hippy wing' of the 'God Squad', always thought he would have been more suited to the Jesuits.
Fife Rover Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Holy Joe was brilliant. I used to love his tuck shop. Hmmmm.....never actually experienced that....must have come after my time. However...did you also love his swearing (in both English and Latin), and did you enjoy having the blackboard cleaner bouncing off your head Al ? To say nothing of being called the longest list of the most unmentionable filthy names I had ever heard from anyone let alone a so-called Catholic Priest and teacher.
Neil Weaver Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Well ET, quite a few of the away games I went to last season (Mboro, Sheff Wed, Huddersfield, Barnsley come to mind) were 'sit anywhere you like' so if you ended up close to an unsavoury mob you could move no problem. Realise that won't be the case at some games though.
West Yorks Rover Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Whenever I've been to local away matches I find it really uncomfortable being around "the vocal ones". I won't call them supporters or even fans because they're there for their own entertainment and it's not football. I think the behaviour has become gradually worse. From throwing bins in concourses and killing someone to bawling at our own players and shouting racist remarks... Unbelievably I think there's worse to come, particularly if fans think it's normal to take smoke bombs and flares to the ground. It's a shame for many of us because I'm sure we find away days more exhilarating than home matches but short of buying all the tickets before "The Others" do, what can you do? All seater stadiums the biggest problem, you just can't always get away from the nutters like you could with terracing.
Butty Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 You weren't at Bayer Leverkusen then? I was and I saw two rovers fans beating the kean out of each other!

Never actually got me with the board duster. I must have been a good boy. Actually he doesn't sound like the same guy. Tall guy, well built who taught us Religious Knowledge and brought out a tray at break time with chocolate bars etc. I'm 71 years old. Did I attend at the same time as you? I certainly remember Tommy Duckworth. Red faced and played water polo.
ABBEY Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 It was a lot better back then . It was a good night out . Now it's embarrassing. Even live lounge is shutting down.
