[Archived] Fracking, for or against it?

We shouldn't forget Cumbria rejected nuclear waste storage despite the promise of huge investment because "evidence from independent geologists that the fractured strata of the county was impossible to entrust with such dangerous material"

http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2013/jan/30/cumbria-rejects-underground-nuclear-storage

Surely fracking down the road from Sellafield, with the potential for earthquakes, is a little flawed?

Its not earthquakes that were the problem in Cumbria (nor inLancashire), more that nuclear waste would leak, is liquid and then would follow the existing fraturing in the rock formations, and then into groundwater.

Ah OK I get that. I'd rather assumed the already fractured nature of the strata made it more liable to "damage" for want of a better word.

The fracking exploration in West Sussex has been suspended, due to police advise as the locals are revolting.

Wonder if the same would happen up here?

They arent even fracking in west sussex yet. Its an oil drill ..

Im all for it. We badly need investment up here. I wonder if you could fit any jobless scrotes down the wells ?...

No they are drilling for shale gas (fracking). They know theres no significant oil, they just dont have the permit to legally explore for fracking, so are exploring under a different already granted and historic license before going through the courts to get the correct permissions.

I think you'll be disappointed if you think it will bring thousands of jobs at each site too.

Don't know enough about it but looking at the brigade of plug ugly dollopers who are against it is swaying my judgement in favour of it. I haven't seen such a hideous bunch since Greenham Common, the Poll Tax riots and that load of rag tag gypo's at Dale Farm Makes me think the Govt and large corporations are funding the protesters in some way in order to sway public opinion.

Or the news people are finding all the soap dodging munters, and ignoring the hotties for a change.

Never be taken in by the British Bull Corporation or Sky. Yes the rent-a-mob were there today. But alot of decent tax paying folk were also there and they kept the protest peaceful. Ive noticed the decent lot are just labelled NIMBY's now for kicking up a fuss.

I know what you mean but hopefully coming under the heading of 'decent(?) and tax paying' speaking personally I'd rather suck worms than be associated with Norberts 'soapdodgers' and aged hippies.

I don't see lighting tap-water as a problem in the UK Steve, however I do see bigger potential issues with groundwater pollution.

I think the study this article refers too answers that question.

http://oilprice.com/Energy/Energy-General/Duke-University-Study-Links-Fracking-to-Ground-Water-Contamination.html

In the UK, because of the media coverage it would generate, theres no way the government would allow the gas levels to become high enough to light tap water.

Personally, im concerned at the long term pollution of groundwater, caused by pumping chemicals into the groud.

Just a thought but as 65% of the planet is covered by sea water why not do all this fracking under the sea and then nobodies tap water will be affected?

Dangerous levels of radioactivity found at fracking waste site in Pennsylvania:

http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2013/oct/02/dangerous-radioactivity-fracking-waste-pennsylvania

And the same scientist finds that there is no contamination from fracking in Arkansas. http://wunc.org/post/duke-study-shows-no-contamination-near-fracking-wells-arkansas

Apparently the risk of contamination is associated with the surrounding geology, something we should be taking better note of.

Here's an interview with Dr. Vengosh. http://www.smartplanet.com/blog/intelligent-energy/scientist-gas-industry-is-withholding-hydro-fracking-contamination-data/6179

He sounds like a proper scientist, unlike the clowns at the IPCC.
