I saw live the 3 games v Derby last season plus a few times they were on the box and honestly thought they were just about one of the very worst teams in the division. Only stand out player was the blonde young lad up front. The turn around is remarkable.

Its the usual story. Sometimes players and managers just click at certain clubs and not at others. Football is littered with examples of it. Lets be honest, its a game of fine margins. The smallest of margins can win, lose or draw a match. If this goes against you then suddenly the fans start to get restless and some of your players don't buy in to your philosophy. If its one of the senior pro's then before you know it you've lost the changing room. Thats not to say its mutiny, but if they don't 100% trust what you're doing then it shows. I would bet that MaClaren has done very little differently at Derby than he did at Forest. Sometimes it just happens this way. Thats not to detract from what i'm sure is a very dillegent job he does day in day out. Its just the way it goes.

You can inherit a squad containing players suited to your style of play, or you might be unfortunate enough to inherit nothing of the sort and have to wait until the transfer window to correct it. Sometimes managers don't even get that long. Its such a strange industry. To be judged by thousands of paying fans and a watching media on one or two 90 minute periods a week you require a fair amount of luck.

There is no magic formula. At the end of the day a football manager can only really ensure he positively effects the areas he immediately controls. Sadly for them, they don't control every aspect but are held accountable for it lock stock and barrel. Some managers seem good at tactical aspects and tighten up weak areas of the team and maximise the stronger areas. Some are better at galvanising a set of players and creating a team spirit where the players will go that extra mile for them. Great managers do both. But there aren't too many great managers about.

Many on here say that 4-4-2 don't work either. So you agree with Theno and drop Rhodes.

Rhodes should start at the moment and especially so if Dunn can be arsed to play. However as against Sheffield wed if the centre halves have bossed him and if we are being pushed back then he's worse than useless and bowyer should have the balls to sub him. Gestede and Rhodes should be one or the other and not on together.

Disagree with that last call. Gestede won't get enough goals whilst Rhodes doesn't hold the ball enough. The pair playing upfront together can work with Gestede doing the dirty work and Rhodes feeding off. It did not work on Boxing Day because Gestede was played too deep but there were a few glimpses and in the second half on Sunday to suggest they could compliment each other.

If the rest of the team were contributing goals then I would agree about taking Rhodes off when things aren't going for him but the need for goals means he has to stay on for any half chance.

Got to say Gestede and Rhodes linked up well against Birmingham. That was a unique sh@t or bust situation though.

Are you dreaming........... never ever................ did Gestede play Jordan in during the Brum game.
