So after saying he was signing for: Stoke, Newcastle, Sunderland, West Ham, Palace, Bolton, Wigan and QPR, Nixon is now saying infact Rhodes is only signing for us again?!

Unless JR will sign a new contract at about 25-30% of his current remuneration then lets hope Nixon is wrong on that one too.

I get the negativity from posters it's generally either in built or developed from trauma/failure. I also get why there is lots on here.

However I don't "get" how a supporter of a club can be so against the player who has scored 3/4 of his own teams goals over 18 months..

I don't agree that he's now doing the ugly stuff better in general he's just in bad form I think, to say he's now doing what people wanted is just a mask, he's put in two great crosses for Gestede but doesn't seem to be overly working defences

For someone who reads the game so well usually his anticipation of Gestedes flick ons has been woeful.

All good players have bad patches and the break is a at a perfect time for him, I imagine they will be working on that and he'll come out firing again after the break.

isnt Rhodes already on 40k and our highest wage earner at the club.

if he signing a new contract then it can only benefit the club in the long term.

Rhodes a excellent finisher and has scored some very good goals. natural born finisher.

Rhodes work rate is still good and any claims of him being lazy is Bulls**t.

he does need to improve his partnership with Gestede tho about making the right runs and reading each other flick ons.

We've been told time and time again he's happy and won't force a move so I can't see how a new contract with a pay rise if there is one is particularly good for the club, or is his current deal running out soon?

Contracts mean next to nothing anyway

Problem I have with Rhodes is that he doesn't appear to have any burning desire to get one over on his opposition. He seems more than happy for them to outplay him for the majority of games. He might not appear lazy to you because he does half jump for a header, or he does close down the centre half at a 40% canter.

He's not NOTICEABLY lazy like McCarthy or perhaps Berbatov, but he also doesn't seem to have an inherent passion to be the best and win at all costs à la Suarez, Bellamy, Shearer, Rooney, Tevez, Aguero and moving down in quality, Dickov, Long, Ings, Rodriguez, Davies, Dempsey, Kuyt - add as appropriate. All of those players listed are not just content to win, lose or draw, they will do everything in their power to make it happen. They also all have a nasty streak in them which Rhodes seriously lacks. How many times do you hear pro's say 'you need to have a nasty streak'.

Most or all of the players in bold would kill to have the finishing ability of Rhodes.. Shame he doesn't share their willingness to graft.

Actually...interesting question (to me anyway). That first season under Hughes when Rovers were hopeless and he somehow kept us up - we played with a lone striker in Paul Dickov (God love the man). Tell me this Chaddy. If you'd had Rhodes and Dickov available for selection at that time, who do you think would have played? Now in an argument I'm certain you'd tell me Rhodes is better than Dickov but it would be interesting to see who you'd select... thought provoking.

That's an interesting point actually

If it's signed off by someone in India it could disprove the notion they will stop funding after this season

Well its not as though we have to "court" him now the windows closed, and as you say come the summer its open season again. Reward for staying? Bit over the top for that.

And whatever we might say about him, personally I have not felt the electric anticipation that we will get a goal when the ball is at his feet since the days of Shearer. Bellamy came close.

Watching Jordan Rhodes play currently gives me the impression that he is quite content to 'wait' for things to happen whereas some strikers actually 'make' things happen.

Rhodes is what he is. Do the other 9 outfield players not have an obligation?

I agree with your assessment that we've got one of the best tart liners. 'Feed the Rhodes and he will score'. GB needs to show some ambition and let defenders defend and similarly let midfielders have some attacking ambition.

Hear Hear.....

If you have the most clinical finisher in the division, it does not make any sense to do anything other than set up the side to feed him chances. Sure, players need to get involved but I for one would have Rhodes do nothing all game and save his energy for one lung busting and damning shot and goal.

If Rhodes does sign this new contract then it very clear indicate that the current owners are going to fund the club still after this season IMO. also IMO, the new contract offer has come straight from the owners, then its a clear sign that the owners want to keep Rhodes at the club for next season and beyond, unless we got a big offer(12-15 Million pounds) for him, I don't see the owners selling hm. I don't think Rhodes or his agent have ask for a new contract IMO.

Jimmy612, The question u asked to pick between Dickov and Rhodes is a really tough call. Dickov was great in his 2 years for the club. he showed passion, commitment and work rate but not the best finisher in the world or natural finisher like Rhodes. he did scored for Rovers 17 goals in 65 games. 1 goal in 4 games roughly. But I was a big fan of Dickov whilst here.

On Rhodes, he is natural born finisher and his work rate is good. Rhodes has scored for Rovers 43 goals in 73 games for us.

I would pick Rhodes between those 2 players but it a very tough call. Ideally I would like both players in my team tbh.

here are Rhodes goals from last season. my favourite goals from this Video are the goals against Forest in a 3-0 win and against Palace at home last season in 1-1 draw

Corrected it for you RR.

The regular starters we've had playing midfield this season are Lowe, Williamson, Taylor, Marshall, King and Cairney. The first 2 have zero quality on the ball, Taylor has zero quality in the final third, Marshall is very hit and miss, King has been a huge dissappointment and Cairney is a poor man's Dunn.

Lets be honest, maybe Rhodes would have struggled to get into our 2000/01 promotion team, but our current midfield wouldn't have got within a a hundred miles. If we had any £8m midfielders then I think Rhodes would find it a lot easier to look like an £8m striker.
