Offer Jordan Rhodes to any other manager in the Championship and they would snap your hand off. All the other clubs in this division know what he is capable of and would dearly love to have him in their squad, some here think we would be better off without him.

Any player who guarantees 25-30 goals a season at any level of football is worth his weight in gold. We are lucky to have him. Yet some supporters would endorse selling him on the basis of some theory that he could be replaced by someone better for less cost. This being the striker who has scored more goals than anyone else in England in the last four years. Quite a gamble which more often than not doesn't pay off. He and Gestede are building a partnership which this season has brought the club 35-40 goals and next season with a full year together I think they could outstrip 50. That could easily be the difference between achieving something and not.

Anyone think Rhodes will get over 20 next season? I have my doubts

What is there to suggest he won't? Over 100 goals in 4 seasons says he will. I seem to remember at the start of the season someone saying that Rhodes won't even reach 10...

Probably memory tricks but the end of this season seemed far more barren than last.

Plus we now have an alternative up front

A hell of an alternative who has made a star of Conway too. Bloody hope we can keep him!

Good point, as good as Conway has been I can't think of many strikers we've had in a long time that would have finished as many of them as Rudy, he and Conway are complimenting each other perfectly.

I would now be more worried about losing Rudy, he does loads of work for the team along with scoring goals and taking the pressure off Rhodes the worry is we bought him cheap and may be tempted to sell for a decent profit and could lose him relatively cheaply.

The partnership with Rudy is going to be the best we have had since SAS, There is a saying, be careful of what you wish for because once they have gone you then realize what you are missing.

Can't agree with that. We're playing at a far inferior level than the PL, nothing that happens in this division is the "best since..."

Sutton and Gallacher, Jansen and Cole, Cole and Yorke, Santa Cruz and McCarthy. All miles better than Rhodes and Gestede.

I'm not sure who's serious or not, but I would never accept Torres for Rhodes. Not in a million years.

You might not but I think every other Rovers fan would.

Where's the story by the way - the Beano or the Dandy ?

Our recent history would have been different I suggest if allardyce had had the services of gestede instead of kalinic.

In what way? We finished 10th, 11 points behind Everton in 8th. Maybe Gestede could have pushed us up to 9th, although I still think its pure speculation to suggest he'd have been better than Kalinic in the PL. Kalinic was hardly prolific but his link-up play certainly got the best out of Dunn. After that, saying things would have been different would suggest Gestede could somehow have prevented Allardyce being sacked.

Gestede has been awesome this season, but his career prior to that consisted of sitting on the Cardiff bench and a few appearances in the French second tier. There's nothing to indicate that 5 years ago at the age of 20 he'd have been ready for the PL, he's not even ready now in my opinion until he proves this season wasn't a one-hit wonder.

His goals scored are brilliant but are you saying that he doesn't need to improve other aspects of his game pete? Surely you cannot be happy with his all round contribution to the team effort and his teamwork?

I am hoping as he matures as he gets better, some of his all round play this season was an improvement on last season but yes i agree there is room for improvement and hopefully that will be coached into him day after day on the training pitch, i am sure he himself wants to get better.

Doh sorry, i am meaning the best we have had since the ones you have mentioned, not that they are better.

the haters gonna hate.

I will wager wherever he ends up he will score 20 + unless he gets injured.

or if Appleton had Shearer :P

Just been looking at some stats with Rhodes and Gestede, Rhodes on his own scored 10 and assisted 0 until Gestede arrived. After arrival Rhodes has 15 and 4 assists and Gestede has 13 and 3 assist. With a whole pre-season i think they will gel even better and hopefully Rhodes will develop the other sides off his talents even more.

until he proves this season wasn't a one-hit wonder.

I know you meant the other lad, but this is precisely why Jordan Rhodes is worth as much as he is. Proven goal scoring pedigree, regardless of his impact in other parts of the game.

It is the reason every manager in this league would have him. Guaranteed goals.

In that Allardyces tactics would have been more productive and sections of the support would not have turned against him therefore making it much more difficult for Anderson or whoever to get rid of him. Long ball stuff isn't fashionably popular even with a player as dominant in the air as Gestede but when long balls are punted continually to a player so poorly equipped to cope as Rhodes they become downright unpopular.

Careful Gordon. We all know you are not Jordan's biggest fan, but he ain't bad in the air. Certainly lacks the pace that makes average players look good but GB wouldn't plonk JR on the front of the 6 yard box for every corner against us if he thought he was bad with his head. He might not have the power to be a target man like Gestede, but to label him "poorly equipped" is fairly laughable.

The difference having two players up top makes to the long ball is massive. I like to see teams mix it up either way, and the more these two play together- the more second balls they will win. Essentially that is one of Allardyce's mantras- the higher the percentage of attacking or defensive second balls won, the more goals scored or less conceded.

While Rhodes is certainly excellent with his head, it's only when he has space to head it that he actually heads it :P

A long ball from defence will see Gestede challenge for it and Rhodes try to get the knock-down. Rhodes, however, will either duck or shy out of challenging for that kind of header (a la Dann). But in the corner/free kick scenario, he'll challenge because he knows there's a damned good chance it'll go in if he meets it.

Spurr's throws + Conway's (and hopefully Marshall's) deliveries + Gestede + Rhodes = GOALS!!

Jbizzle you're talking about a completely different type of heading. For goalscoring headers, usually the secret to success is finding that yard of space. Rhodes does this because his anticipation in the box is superb. He either nips in front or drops in behind of a centre half and usually can place his headers extremely well. You ever seen him seriously out jump an opponent in the box though to score a header? Usually he's either on the back post looping a header in, or has anticipated well and is crouching to head home (ala Wigan).

Now, Gordon is on about both aerial and general quality outside the box.. something that Rhodes is embarrassingly bad at. The last 4 games I have been to (Watford, Charlton, Yeovil, Wigan), I have not seen him even concern a centre half once when it's come to winning a flick on or bringing the ball on his chest. In fact, at the Yeovil game me and my dad were laughing every time the ball came near to him in the air because he was that pathetic. Honestly didn't jump once.

This is where my theory of his inherent laziness comes about. Let's not forget that Rhodes is 6ft 1 and generally well built. He's not a slight player like people seem to believe. The fact that he doesn't even try to win headers completely infuriates me and he's getting away with it because none of the crowd ever comment or object. I have no idea why frankly.

There used to be an argument on here that JR couldn't run the flanks because the midfield would not be in support. Surely now that we have Gestede's aerial brilliance and Conway who is never far behind, then Rhodes could in theory be making SOME runs to draw defenders wide? Or am I expecting too much?

He's done it for at least the last three seasons. Why do you think the next one will be any difference. You are welcome to your opinion. I would just like to know on what you base that opinion.

I'd go with lots of what you say- he certainly us not the Jason Roberts "hungry bulldog" style striker who creates chances through using power and pressure on the back four.

From watching him the past 2 seasons, I have say - I've never thought he was particularly bad in the air. He certainly is not a complete forward though, and a distinct lack of pace is my main gripe.

The emergence of Rudy is only going to help though, especially as he has the assets that JR is perceived to lack.

Based on this I see another 20+ goal season in store for Jordan. Providing we keep the more creative players obviously!
