Well we havnt won anything since 66, so I guess its been a long decline

Its well perceived by many that the world rankings at international level are a joke. Apart from seedings maybe they serve no purpose.

I can't believe the lack of national pride shown after a good England win. We topped the group and qualified for the finals. No wonder the foreigners are taking over the country.

Really?

#1 foreigners are taking over the country?

#2 because of a lack of pride?

If you live near Blackburn you had better believe it. With a bit more National pride we would never have allowed it.

England made it. Top of the group with no losses. I am very happy we did qualify as it sorts out my summer 2014.

Hodgson has done a good job. The press will have plenty of time to sharpen their knives before the tournament starts.

It's the press that has put pressure on England for years, yesterday England looked to be playing very loosely and free. Good performance, maybe the low-profile Hodgson will tell them not to read the papers. I myself could tolerate John Terry but after his antic, a player would have to do some very bad things to get press coverage.

In the past, you could see the England team playing like the weight of the world was on their shoulders, too much pressure.

Hodgson looked very strained and very old last night I thought, prob time for him to call it a day. He's done his job, got us there and elevated himself almost to a national treasure. A humiliating performance in Brazil will destroy all that.

He's steadied the ship since the 'failed foreigner' experiments of the past decade but last night showed me his limitations cos his substitutions were absolutely mystifying.

Failed foreigner ?? Eriksson gave England their pride back after taking over from the lamentable Keegan, sailing through three qualifying competitions and getting England to the last 8 in the 2006 World Cup. England were in much better shape when he departed than when he arrived though i will never forgive for taking the game against the convicts so lightly. Capello also qualified easily for two big tournaments and although his reign was more contentious (particularly his salary) England played well under him and he was unlucky that England went out to Germany in the 2010 WC after Lampard's over the line goal was ruled out. Overall both managers did well for England given the talent available and neither could be said to have "failed".

All national teams have the media on their backs. It's the old adage "if in doubt blame the press" and it's a load of horlicks.

Ahmed.

Why don't you fight your way to the top? You seem like quite the spokesman.

This could be your equivalent of Operation Hummingbird. Except they are falling on their long knives, rather than you having to actually do anything.

Or you can just spout garbage from your armchair and reminisce about the good old days, when everything was better.

Sven-Goran Eriksson commented numerous times how if the England team was not doing well, the manager could become the most hated man in England. I will go with his assessment and being depicted that way comes some at least from the press.

Eriksson stepped down from his most recent position as the English national team manager following England's exit from the 2006 World Cup; there was, however, considerable speculation that he was forced out by the English football authorities due to his tenure being punctuated by well-documented tabloid reports of his private life.

And this is just one aspect but I'd call this above "pressure from the press".

A manager of the national team in the world's biggest game is always going to be in the spotlight and it's no different here than in France, Germany, Spain, Italy, here or anywhere else. These people are always under pressure and to blame the press for England's failings is just nonsense. Germany's managers seem to cope very well. As for Eriksson he didn't help himself with the press by constantly dropping his trousers......

Where do you spout your garbage from Braddock? Maybe a soap box. I fought my way to the top when I was younger and now I can sit back and enjoy the rewards and ignore the @#/? from the likes of you

There was the fake-Shiek episode http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/sports/2007-05/22/content_877599.htm

Where has the press in Germany, Spain, Italy set up something like that??

By the way, as good as a manager as Spain's Aragones was, he ran into trouble for what he said in practise.

You mentioned Glenn Hoddle the other day:

Simon Weston, the Falklands war veteran, also referred to Hoddle's dismissal as a witchhunt and many people believed that the Football Association had simply caved in to Press pressure. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glenn_Hoddle

Capello leaving after the Terry episode, on and on.

I don't know where all of the pressure comes from, expectations or where from, but these players last night seemed to play with a lot more ease and in a relaxed style than some other England teams I have seen especially the ones from the last 10 years.

It may well be thanks to Hodgson, they played as a real cohesive unit.

Do your research - our press are like lambs compared to the media in other countries. In any case, a good manager like Ramsey ignores outside infuences and gets on with the job and some, like Venables, has the press eating out of his hand. Blaming the press for England';s failings since 1966 is putting your hand in the sand as to the real causes for our decline such as poor coaching and emphasis on strength rather than skill. Just accept like a,lot of people you're wrong.

Audax, Jim's from the journo fraternity, of course he is going to stick up for them. In my experience they have hardly ever helped. The insidious WAG coverage from 2006 irked me to no end.

Off the topic of England;

Mexico ragged it into the playoff's where they play New Zealand. They got beat off Costa Rica but stayed where they were in the group. Panama, the only team that could catch them, were 2-1 up at home but the USA scored 2 in stoppage time securing a 3-2 win. Heartbreaking.

So we can not show a "Fake Shiekh" sting operation in the foreign press. Thank you.

Also, no one said anything about 1966.

This team played very snake-bit in the past, they did, they had pressure, maybe not all from the press but clearly some. Particularly in the last decade though were very good I thought in 2004.

Panama had only one win, Mexico could not get a draw to save themselves. I hope the Kiwis can survive the challenge and go to the World Cup because it seems neither Panama or Mexico really deserve a World Cup birth.

First sentence does not make sense.

As for the second sentence, is this English ? I haven't a clue what you're banging on about.

Okay, so you rely on an argument now by criticising the punctuation of others.

So we (or you) can not show a "Fake Shiekh" sting operation conducted by the foreign press? As was done to entrap Erikksen.

Thank you

Fixed! I will make sure I proof read all message board material. :tu:

By the way, an Italian Journalist said the English Press went too far in going after the personal lives of players. It is what is done on the pitch that is important.

If England were (or the manager) were any good, whatever the press say or does would not make a halfpennty worth of difference. England have failed for 50 years not because of the press but because of its own shortcomings. End of story.
