Thierry Henry incident[edit]

In 2004 Aragonés was appointed coach of Spain. During a training session in the same year, a Spanish TV crew filmed Aragonés trying to 'motivate' José Antonio Reyes by making offensive references about Reyes' Arsenal black team-mate, Thierry Henry, saying:

Tell that negro de mierda that you are much better than him. Don't hold back, tell him. Tell him from me. You have to believe in yourself, you're better than that negro de mierda.[1]

The incident caused uproar in the British media with calls for Aragonés to be sacked.

Just as a matter of interest what the hell has it to do with us? A French player, a Spanish player and a Spanish manager at a Spanish training session.

Our media appear to be the press equivalent of Grant Hanley!

I'm very familiar with Leveson thank you. To repeat, all leading football nations have to live with an inquisitive and intrusive media. Germany in particular. The difference is they get with the football and recognise when they have a problem on and off the field, as Germany did in 2002. Blaming the press for the demise of inadequate England managers and the failure of the national team is lazy and for fools.

If Alf Ramsey had heeded the press in '66 we'd still be awaiting our first World Cup success.

Good story and of legitimate interest to fans and the public.

You need to get a life if you think that pathetic and mischievous nonsense is a good story. The press would have the entire nation walking on egg shells.

..... oh and btw completely irrational perhaps but I do admit to being more than a touch racist in that area.... I know it's wrong and the pc brigade on here will get all hot and bothered, but I much prefer brown eggs to white ones, and brown hens to white hens too for that matter.

From what I read last night in those tweets it seemed to be pointing to somebody who didn't play on Tuesday who had been passed story from somebody who did play, might have changed since then not looked today

As in most people who hear a joke pass it on if they think it's humerous. The 'leak' is not certain to have been malicious in any way. Malice comes later with whoever passed the story on and which pathetic ed decided to publish it.

The 'joke' was racist whether he meant it to be or not. The media are always going on about what an intelligent man Hodgson is and let's not forget that this is a man who played football in apartheid South Africa during the boycott. So with the evidence you either have to conclude that Hodgson is incredible naïve and not as intelligent as the media make out or Hodgson is a racist?

The joke doesn't mention colour in any shape or form, it mentions a man and a monkey. People's view points may connect uncoordinated dots but that does not make it so, the argument here is that he used this reference to Townsend and Smalling, so what? They knew what he meant and didn't take any offence, really a non-story. If however we discover Roy has assumed the leadership of the rudderless EDL I may change my view, until then I will assume that this is a storm in a teacup.

Soooo, any jokes involving monkeys are automatically racist now? Is that the deal we have? Therefore the whole Eddie Izzard routine about learning French by taking a monkey along with him, as it was in a textbook also disgusting and outrageous.

In that case, I find white chocolate racist, as it is not as nice as normal chocolate.

You can infer that I think this is a non-story, probably hyped up by bitter people who are big mates with Redknapp.

Correct Norbert! Hodgson Out!

Hodgson OUT! Give the job to Herman Ouseley from the pathetic 'Kick it out' organisation and let him take us to Brazil.

BUT Wouldn't playing football in SA not show that Hodgson did not support apartheid?

btw Somersetrover..... but what is it that makes you immediately connect monkeys to black people?

It's only racist if you take it completely out of context, sure.

I don't make a connection but Hodgson is doing that by referring black player in his 'joke' as a monkey. And we see racist bigots all around the world making monkey chants towards black people and throwing bananas at them, it is those sort of people making the connection not me.

As for your comment about apartheid are you really so uneducated that you know nothing about the sporting boycott of South Africa during the apartheid era. All though going by your signature you no doubt you supported apartheid like your heroin, hence your defence of Hodgson playing there.

It takes a racist to put a racist slant on that joke which has no racist meaning whatsoever

Surely it was referencing that Townsend was doing all the work, like the monkey in his joke, nothing to do with his colour. I think it says more about the people getting offended on Townsend's behalf than Roy personally.

That is how I see it. There was no race connotation whatsoever, but the press get hold of it, twist it, fake moral outrage, then force Hodgson to apologise only 24 hours after his proudest moment in management.

But oh no, the press aren't at fault at all. - what a load of utter keans.

As for the alleged leaker and Redknapp disciple, it's not too classy.

While efforts to eradicate racism are good, England's "Kick it Out" and similar organizations are comprised of complete bat**** insane psychopaths foaming at the mouth just looking for where they can possibly start up a fight. Complete fools that need kicking out themselves. It's one thing to promote change in society, it's another to act like the Gestapo.

Not my heroin but rather the originator of that piece.... it's obvious that you need to keep up. Try reading it a bit slower. ;)

Surely townsend decides if its racist and he has clearly said it wasnt. Isnt that end of debate?

Of course it is. Hodgson picked Townsend from nowhere and by doing so has massively escalated his value and his associated salary expectations. The guy is now set for life. Hardly the actions of a racist and tbh if I were Townsend I couldn't give a flying one if it was.

Indeed so. In fact imo their extreme efforts will actually foment racism in deference to the equal and opposite effect theory.

Isn't herion an illegal narcotic, whilst many would argue that the heroine described here mainlined the former that ain't necessarily so.

No that is heroin.

Quite easy to make are typo's don't you think blue-n-white? :P

Hodgson's a Rolling Stones fan, look it up and honestly, that in itself says to me he's not going to be harbouring hostile sentiments and probably the closest he's been to anyone using heroin.

Townsend, maybe Roy thinks of the Who... and I thought there was one more association one could make, escapes me now.

Of course, some of this is said in jest.

Hodgson could have avoided controversy if he had used the word "primate" instead of monkey. I don't think he should lose his job over this but he clearly needs to be more careful over what he says in future. Telling a monkey joke to a team with alot of black players was foolish to say the least. Still, if Hodgson fails in Brazil it will be all the press's fault anyway.
