[Archived] Rovers away day on the South coast - Brighton, Sat 9th November

Recommended Posts

I will put something together tomorrow - would fancy a trip, good pies, real ale on the ground, and me Burnley mate Pete went tut Dingles game, one of the few they have lost this season, and he got wet through! There is a god! But I will be in the Lakes, getting equally wet.

A win would get us all excited, with two big home games to come......but then we owe the national debt care of Chicken lickers Utd.

Oh to be a Rovers fan, see you tomorrow!

Just some thoughts on the forthcoming fixture.

What do I know of Brighton off the top of my head....well me mum and dad took me there as a child. They showed me a glitzy huge Pavillion...very impressive, trouble was I couldn't see a cricket pitch for moss nor sand!

Like Blackpool, it's made up of three parts, whilst Blackpool has Fleetwood and St Annes, Brighton has Hove, and the small village of And, in between. It has a pier, but Blackpool has three, so in the words of the Country wordsmith, Shania Twain, "that don't impress me much"! Seagulls are common to both, nasty big blighters, nick your kids ice cream soon as look at them, whilst Brighton, the team, as a picture of one on its emblem.

According to the AA, it's 284 miles from Ewood to Brighton, so one of our longer away jaunts, well done to all those making the trip.

My little boy's book of footy says that in the football league years [excluding last year's fixtures] we had played Brighton only 26 times in our history, winning 9, drawing 7, and losing 10. They were late starters to the league, being only elected to the old third division in 1920. They have had a nomadic existence, starting off in Hove at the Goldstone ground, before that was sold for redevelopment in 1997. Thereafter forced to play 70 miles away at Gillingham, before moving back temporarily to Brighton and the Withdean stadium in 1999.

They finally had a purpose built, fancy dan stadium approved, and in 2011, the then Falmer Stadium was opened. It has since been renamed the Amex Gold Card, to be paid back in full at the end of the month, Stadium [other, more reasonable credit cards are available]. With a capacity of just over 30,000, currently this season it boasts the highest home attendances in the Championship.

Last year we managed to share the spoils, both home and away, 1-1. Still, a tough place to go, even though we are currently sitting 3 places above them, but separated by only a point. Their home form seems erratic, having won 2, drawn 3 and lost 2 so far.

On viewing the player profiles, I have to say I didn't recognize many of the Brighton players, Matthew Upson, Leroy Lita are familiar, although Keith Andrews appeared to wink at me when I got to player 4. A little bit of my weetybangs came back into my mouth from breakfast - I'd forgotten the wily old fox was still plying his trade on the south coast.

PAFELL has already said he will put any Rovers waifs and strays up if you miss the bus home! He has also provided a very good potted guide to popular watering holes in the vicinity of the ground.

Now boys and girls, no homophobia, just sing loud and proud and get behind the players and manager! Apparently, according to our website, over 600 tickets have been sold of our initial 950 allocation.

After the depressing financial news of the week, it is still our club, and 3 points on Saturday would stand us in good stead, with two home games to come.

COYB's!

Im going against my usual grain and predicting us to sneak a win. 1-2 to Rovers with Rhodes scoring an early goal, them equalising soon after then us being under the cosh until sub Ben Marshall scores a pearler of a free kick late on :) Looks likely to be over 800 Rovers down there so that would be just reward.

Just bought my tickets online and asked what seats they were. She said row 'B' at which point i said can you put me further back. She said 'these are the two that come up next on the system' She then went on to ask her mate who said she had 'row C'.

Does this mean that there were no tickets higher up or they just have to go in system order? I know I'm late but I thought I might get 2 tickets further back than row B.

What happened to the days when they used to look on a computer and find you the best seats? I hate sitting down too. I don't sing, nor do I shout or jump around, I just prefer standing up. Looks like I'll be sat down all afternoon.

I bought mine online at the weekend and there were only 2 rows available to choose from. Looked like they are at the front.

Well thats what I tried to do and then cause there were hardly any options I called up and said are you sold out and she said no we just don't put them all online.

Anyway, never mind.

You're in Bucks? whereabouts and how are you getting to Brighton. Nightmare that the train service is interrupted.

I live in Wycombe you see

Oh and for everyone's interest

Trains might be a nightmare if anyone is planning it. Can get as far as Hayward Heath before you need to get a coach. Details at bottom of webpage.

Taking the Mrs to this one and looking forward to a large and vocal Rovers following, credit to those making the journey from Lancashire.

I've been told that they sell real ale from the local area of the visiting team, so can we expect some Wainwrights? Here's hoping!! :)

Predicting a scrappy 1-1 (Rhodes pen)

I think it was Lancaster Bomber last season.

I'll be there on Saturday with a Rovers virgin, namely my old man. I've spent the week trying to explain to him why we hate burnley b*stards 'til our dying day and why it's OK for Lee Williamson to take a red but to no avail.

Hoping we can show him a good day out; 3-1 Rovers (Rhodes 2 and Lowe)

LOL I will point the way north to the waifs and strays. I will be in one or two of the watering holes. Though I live over an hour by train from the ground. I will probable be popping into pubs in Eastbourne, Lewes and Falmer - yes there is one there, but for home fans only. But as I know the landlord and the security blokes, I always get in.

I note your comment about homophobia - one thing I am aware of, Brighton are clamping down very hard on homophobic chants. When they hear such chants the cameras focus on the area, as well as the stewards. very hard to prove you were not the one chanting.

You forgot Brightons captain, Gordon Greer.

We need Dunn more for the back to back home games, so I'd start him on the bench and hopefully give him some minutes in the 2nd half.

After not being a fan of it all season I think 442 is now our best bet at the minute as long as king is up front. The boro game highlighted how much teams fear his pace when he's upfront. Boro immediatley defended 10-15 yards deeper when he joined rhodes up top. We suddenly started playing the game in there half which clearly suits JR bigtime also.

Kean

Kane Dann Hanley Spurr/killgallon

Cairney lowe williamson Any of taylor/marshall/judge

JR King

We take a 2 goal lead with JR and King getting 1 each. Dunny comes on for last 25mins as we switch to 4-5-1 to protect our lead and dunny bags a 3rd. 3-0 rovers :)

Kean

Henley Dann Hanley Spurr

Lowe Williamson

Cairney Dunn King

Rhodes

Subs: Eastwood, Kilgallon, Kane, Etuhu, Taylor, Judge, Best.

Would probably go with that, with maybe Kane ahead of Henley. Wouldn't ideally have Cairney out wide but I think Williamson and Lowe were our best players v Middlesbrough and will help us pack the midfield.
