Actually I came out of the situation well. Had a better paid job within a week at a startup company but a lot of my friends who worked on the shop floor had no jobs to go to. It's them I am angry about.

Pretty much like my dad, then. Only he has reason to struggle to be angry with it :P

Al, I remember going around the empty workshops there, looking at all the rovers stickers on the lockers etc. Somebody had chalked " Come on Rovers " in big letters on one of the walls. We didn't buy anything at the aunction but I know a lot of the machines went abroad, India etc. It's always sad going around shops that have closed. I went around dozens over the years. It was always in the back of my mind that one day it would be my turn. One day it was.

Sounds like your dad ended up very well off, good for him.

That era shat on my dad and, although he worked long and hard, he wasn't quite so lucky.

Bloody heartbreaking to see another of our world-beating industries sacrificed by a dogmatic government hell bent on smashing the trade unions.

Thatcher can rot in her grave for the devastation she caused to this country.

'Cause and effect' Jim. As well you know but for the benefit of the younger members Margaret Thatcher was simply the result of the pendulum swinging back to the right. A natural reaction after 15 years of this countries successive governments having to cow tow to undemocratically elected communist led Trades Unions who had been able to hold previous governments to ransom and in two cases contribute massively to their downfall. 'The British Disease' was a phrase used time and again to describe our situation in the 70's. No doubt there were Trades Unions that were run in a fit and proper fashion for the benefit of their members, unfortunately it was the larger ones usually representing nationalised industries led by openly declared communist leaders that did so much damage to British industry as to render it uncompetative in world markets which resulted in the nations silent majority electing and supporting Mrs Thatcher for 11 years democtarically through the ballot box to provide balance. It's sad but Thatcher was merely cutting away the dead wood from the once mighty British Industry which hade been caused by 20 years of disruption.

I know the likes of you and Tyrone like all left wingers cannot stand it but that is how a democracy works. If you don't like it then go to a country that has dispensed with the ballot box and replaced it with communism. North Korea might suit.

Who the hell cares about this? An attempt at humour albeit in slightly poor taste in some opinion behind the doors of his own home does not require any apology whatsoever. And certainly not when it's based on the content of some Red Top fish and chip paper. Smalling is a footballer not a diplomat. Hell would have frozen over before I'd have apologised.

Time for top clubs to insist that footballers employ security to remove phones from all guests on arrival or barr them from entry.

Just so wrong in so many ways but you are too arrogant to argue with Gordon. There are better ways to fight the unions than to close down manufacturing industry in half of the country. Just an evil bitch. How old were you at the time?

I agree. It was in bad taste, but it was at a private party in his house. Guests would have probably known he had that sense of humour, so if they're likely to be morally outraged then they would not come. When I initially heard this, I thought it was in public, at a nightclub or whatever. Now I know it was at his house, with his friends then I don't see any need to apologise.

This shows us exactly why footballers and other public figures have no personality. People are so quick to jump on anything, wherever it takes place, whatever the context, that they have to clear it with a PR guru whether they can fart. Chris Smalling is a person, and people have flaws, idosycratic behaviour and views on issues. Some may be off kilter with what society thinks, some may be popular.

Only telling it how it was Al. Which bit is wrong? I'd been working quite a few years by 1979. The unions as well as the developing world changing had made a lot of manufacturing uncompetative. Case in point... we could import coal from places like Venezuala (at that time) cheaper than we could dig it out of the ground! The nation wanted cheap electricity, at that time we were fighting rampant inflation, we could save all our coal which may be invaluable in the future so it was logical to close soem of the less economical pits. What would you have done?

It's just the car / vacuum cleaner / washing machine / TV issue on a wider scale... have you never run a car made overseas Al? Yes or No? How about all the other things I mentioned?

Germany took a different route with their industry and credit to them but then Germans have a different mentality than us and Germany didn't have to contend with our Unions did they? Makes one wonder how the country would be fixed now if the Japs hadn't bombed Pearl Harbour eh? No doubt we'd still have Clayton Goodfellows churning out hi tech engineering items. Would that have been better do you think?

As I said no one can have a logical argument with you Gordon. What the hell does Pearl Harbour have to do with Thatcher. It has to make sense for a country to have full employment and to deliberately destroy jobs has got to be wrong no matter how you try to justify it. So many people suffered for this bitch. We only have one life and she ruined so many lives for so many people. If you justify that you are as bad as she was.

One sentence amid all this dross shows as usual you haven't got a f*oking clue.

If you are struggling then you need to read it a little slower.

Anyway it was Charles Darwin who suggested that evolution was governed by 'survival of the fittest'. Didn't they have any bikes for you to get on in Bash?

Doesn't matter how slowly you read dross, it's still dross.

I think I said before that I came out of it very well. I didn't need a bike I had a car, but if we are to rely on Darwinism there will be no help for the stricken in Africa they will just be allowed to die. I can't believe that even you from you're position to the right of Genghis Khan can be so inhuman.

The Germans tend to have the unions as part of works councils of the major companies like VW, or so I've heard. The management, the workers and the unions all meet together to plan future development and discuss issues. It seems that it was more confrontational during the 60's, 70's and finally the 80's in this country.

Oh, and it was not Charles Darwin Gordon, but Herbert Spencer who was the founding figure of Social Darwinism.

Now it's correct I agree with you; nothing at all.

Trying to re-write history I see. A well known tactic of extremist governments. You'll be burning books next.

It's well documented that Scanlon, McGahey, Jones, Scargill, Red Robbo etc etc were members of the communist party. A simple google will reveal that. Workers interests was not their main concern politics was. Disruption on a national scale and economic damage were their weapons. St Margaret slew the Dragons didn't she?

You know bloody well what the point was. Jim has the right idea.

Crikey.... I didn't have you down for an embittered and frustrated old commie Al. Not with your mild beer, golf and bowling greens. Still if the cap fits.

Note that I used the word 'extremist' Don. ;) It happens equally at 25 past and 25 to on the political clockface. The Religious too considering the shennanigins with Salman Rushdie's 'satanic verses@ and of course that hilarious comic book episode between Norway and the entire muslim world.

I cannot however find any references to the Conservative govt under Mrs Thatcher being responsible for public displays of such. Maybe you could provide the links you obviously have.

Lets reword your argument Gordon.

Can you provide links to disprove your theory that she wasnt extreme?

It wasn't an argument it was merely a request to you for the evidence that you must have. Obviously by her actions, unless you provide those links then we can be pretty sure that she didn't burn contentious books in public.

You have impaled yourself on a spike of infantile argument Don. :tu:

Not a Commie in fact a Conservative voter but not so blinkered as to see when the party is wrong and Thatcher certainly was. Stupid remarks about mild beer do not enhance your arguments in fact I believe you argue just for the sake of being obtuse whether you believe what you say or not.
