Really interesting to read the comments. I'm still a Welling United season ticket holder and remember quite a bit from that day. The police banned all pubs opening but the nearby Rose defied the ban and was packed with Blackburn fans. As far as I can tell it was your first team? image that happening now in the FA Cup!!
I saw a few scuffles but lots of Charlton and a few Millwall about that day. Looking back the police seemed quite heavy but I suppose that was then and this is now. I think they were worried about anything spoiling the big day. It was only by chance I kept newspaper cuttings that year, at our level we only get a few online comments now. Back then real journalism with reporters doing previews, reports etc.

I edited the video with music from 88/89 as well. Considering we had the likes of Bros, Rick Astley, Sonia and Jive Bunny we can all sigh with relief!

Anyone remember mental day out at Bradford? George Courtney was reffing and he looked shocked at the abuse he got from the away end. Palace still makes me feel sick and always will.

I think that day he gave us a pen? The first of 5 he gave us in 3 games following that awful Palace decision??...Plymouth (home) 2...Leicester (Wembley) 2?

Yes I remember that, always liked that away end at Bradford, small compact and everyone stood on the barrier that ran along the back of the terrace.

Where's lil Ronnie ? :)

Tom, thanks for pointing out the glaring error as of course our Ronnie started. Your post actually got me to recheck the lineup as I was using the matchday programme and Jackmans book. He says the lineup was Gennoe, Atkins, Hill, Hendry,Sulley, Finnigan, Hildersley, Gayle, Sellars, Garner and Sellars. Not sure who the subs are but the programme says Ainscow and Hill which is incorrect as Hill played. Not a bad lineup though is it?

It was lively in the streets behind the away end at Bradford. I heard some Rovers fans also called in at Burnley that day.

The big Window just down from the town hall I seem to recall, or was that another time.

Memory not what it was.

Thanks for the original post GaryH, certainly got the memory working :), after the game we looked around for a "friendly " pub and luckily bumped into two mid 40's blokes who were obvious welling supporters who we got chatting to and they took us to members club (really dodgy looking from the outside, presume it was a members club as they had to sign us in) that had a few Welling supporters in, friendly bunch who were ecstatically proud and rightly so, of the clubs performance that day, we had a good couple of hours in there before setting off home. Can't remember what it was called but about 15 minutes walk from the ground and looked like two converted houses.

sounds like the Bellegrove Social Club, still there and set back slightly from the road. proud is the correct term, we had only been playing Saturday football since the 70s and yet less than 15 years later up against Blackburn. shame the way the FA Cup is going now though.

Is the sports club still going?

Yes it was more or less our 1st team and we had a reasonably decent team at 2nd div level at the time. Can't remember much about the game but from what i do it was quite close and we had a few scares. What's happening down there now mate, what league/form/ crowds etc ?

Cracking away end that was. We usually had a good following there but there didn't have to be many to make a racket also the kop at the other end seemed massive although it probably wasn't. As for outside i remember all hell breaking loose once and we ended up legging it through some back gardens to get out of the way of a baying mob coming down the street. It was a Saturday afternoon game around 87/88 i think and this Asian fella threw a broom at us as we scrambled through his yard/garden . All the kids faces at the window laughing :) you did what you had to at times !

the sports club is still next door with the cricket pitch etc. As for us, we are now in the Conference Premier after a 13 year absence. Been through the wringer with tax debts and nearly folding but less that 40 fans raised £60,000 to get out us out of a certain creek about 3 years back. Now on the up and mid table but do struggle with home crowds. Last year we were playing in front of 500 crowds but going to place like Wrexham, Luton etc. it's a bit like League 2 I suppose. We have a great manager who will go on to much better things.

We made the 2nd round of the FA Cup this year, lost away to Plymouth but beat Luton in the 1st.

Slightly off topic but George Courtney gave us 2 penalties in the 92 play off final in his last ever game!! Rovers fans obviously softened him up!

Pity you didn't progress in the cup it would have been nice for 25 year reunion ! Anyway sounds like you have a good bunch of hardcore fans there raising that cash. Doesn't seem there are many clubs anywhere in England not struggling finance wise, sickening when you think of the money washing around and the fact hardly any of it gets back to that level.

I remember it getting tasty outside Oakwell one year, premiership season i think, and we got seperated from our 'brothers in arms' when it kicked off, further down the road 3 of us got chased by a large group of locals and ran right through someone's house and over the back wall, we got away.

Young and daft, what must the people that lived in the house have thought.
