Stuart Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Generally speaking businesses can survive if they move with the times. An emphasis on green and a campaign against using paper has forced newspapers to replace lost profit by providing downloadable subscriptions.Since their inception, newspapers have been able to be purchased on a daily basis, without the need to sign up to a lengthy, costly subscription.I don't see why, given how easy it would be to deliver and charge for why downloadable newspapers aren't available on a daily basis. I don't like it but I'd even pay the printed cover price for a pay-as-you-go digital newspaper. Much like downloadable books, the costs are lower but the price is the same or even more than a paperback - sometimes even a hardback!! A higher adoption rate for electronic books/newspapers/magazines is prevented, presumably because they don't want to completely kill off the printing presses. So digitally-minded folks are subsidising and propping up the printers to accommodate the NIMBYs.

So digitally-minded folks are subsidising and propping up the printers to accommodate the NIMBYs. Funny you should mention this , but was at the Library the other day and was asking about the digital book service they have and how digital book loans are comparing with hard copy. Basically they said that they have seen a massive increase in library memberships in the 16-30 age group over he last 12 months because of the "digital " library, but they are having to cut back on the amount of titles and copies of each title because they have to purchase a new licence of a title once ever 20 downloads (book out's) because of licences with the publishers, compare this to having to replace a hard copy approx every 30/35 times its booked out through wear and tear. Prices to the Library service are almost identical for a hard copy and a digital copy. So the publishers are in effect by their actions will be stunting the growth of people actually being able to use the library service for no other reason than greed . So why does a digital version of a book cost the same as a hard copy ? No doubt they will use the same excuse the music and film industry uses about piracy etc. Never really thought about the digital library being restricted to how many copies it holds of a certain title and having to replace a digital version, and even more odd that you have to wait for a digital version to be returned before it can be taken out by someone else. FYI If you are a digital book reader here's a link that maybe of interest https://archive.org/details/texts Contains thousands upon thousands of out of copyright books that are free to download
JAL Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Allright if you don't understand the written word then let me make it simple for you Al. Answer me this..... how long can a brewer produce large quantities of beer if not enough are drinking it? Tell you what, why don't you open a brewery and employ those 60 specialised and highly trained people? If it's that simple you can't go wrong. If Thwaites have too big a site for what they produce then why cant they demolish part of this large town centre site and rebuild a newer slimline brewery on site. The town centre certainly doesnt need a Sainsburys
thenodrog Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 The town centre does not encourage industry either. Smells, heavy transport etc are no longer encouraged. btw I don't believe Sainsbury's need Blackburn town centre either. Not enough 'Sainsbury types' about the place and surrounded by Tesco's, Morrisons, asda and Whalley range just up the road it's not an attractive site, and especially so with Aldi and Lidl for the Poles and the like coming up on the rails fast.
Paul Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Why would you assume "Poles and the like" shop in Aldi and Lidl? Have you been in one?
old darwen blue Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Pretty good is Aldi. Supermarket of the year for the past three years or something like that.
Backroom Mike E Posted January 30, 2014 Backroom Posted January 30, 2014 Pretty good is Aldi. Supermarket of the year for the past three years or something like that. As a student I swore by Lidl and Aldi. Great shops and are essentially Sainsbury's quality at Poundland prices. 8-packs of bottled Real Ale for a fiver? Ta very much!
thenodrog Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Why would you assume "Poles and the like" shop in Aldi and Lidl? Have you been in one? Both.... and netto before it was closed down by Asda. Lidl especially is full of em. tbh I quite enjoy it... it's like hiring a villa abroad and going to the local supermarket to stock up. Much more interesting. Fact is many supermarkets around these parts have special 'polish' sections. And for those with closed minds and primitive beliefs even sections for halal food too. Time you 'ofcumdens' who no doubt divide your grocery provision between Waitrose, your upmarket Sainsbury's and Asda and of course Franks butcherie, who live in rural idyll down quiet leafy lanes came to visit Blackburn for stuff other than the football then you'd know a bit more about the place before you make snidy insinuations. btw You live near the L&L canal don't you? I doubt there'll be many fish in there before too long.
Paul Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Very touchy this morning Gordon. So if I live in a rural idyll you're slumming it? Looked like a nice farm last time I cycled by your place, rural as well. Tesco, Asda, Booths, Sainsbury, Aldi, the local farm shop and Chorley market - good for veg and cheese - in fact. We don't support any particular supermarket, just shop at the one we are nearest which could be anywhere between Accrington and Knutsford depending on who's shopping and when. I'm not sure about the relevance of fish in the L&L canal, it's years since I saw anyone fishing it and the guys with roach poles used to be a regular feature.
T.J.Newton Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 This guy is the most unintrelligent person I've ever seen. I bet I could give him a run for his money.
JAL Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 The town centre does not encourage industry either. Smells, heavy transport etc are no longer encouraged. What do you mean the town centre doesnt encourage industry who says that Theno ? The location of Thwaites brewery is ideal for transport as its on the edge of Barbara Castle way and easy access to junction 6 of the M65.

Barbara Castle does not go anywhere, it is about 3 miles from J6 through urban traffic
Backroom Mike E Posted January 30, 2014 Backroom Posted January 30, 2014 I reckon it's nearer J5. And still bloody hard to get to with awkward turns on Cicely lane and top of Bennington street. Edit: Although if you head down Lark Hill, there's only one awkward turn and yhen straight on til you hit the dual carriageway, so.....
JAL Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 er! Barbara Castle does not go anywhere, it is about 3 miles from J6 through urban traffic Its a straight road along Eanam and down Burnley road, easily handle heavy vehicles.
yoda Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Its a straight road along Eanam and down Burnley road, easily handle heavy vehicles. You obviously don't cycle down there at peak times
Backroom Tom Posted January 30, 2014 Backroom Posted January 30, 2014 Not sure how we migrated to discussing supermarkets but I'm quite fond of the new little Sainsbury's in cherry tree - the local newsagents aren't though by all accounts
T.J.Newton Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 I went in there last week, nice store, but the way these mini versions of chain supermarkets up their prices by about 5-10%(especially on fresh foods) compared to their regular supermarket prices makes me avoid using them to often.
Backroom Tom Posted January 30, 2014 Backroom Posted January 30, 2014 Aye but they seem to reduce a fair bit when near sell by date picked up some nice mince half price this week Plus you don't have to fight a horde to have a quick gander at the reduced section
adopted scouser Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Both.... and netto before it was closed down by Asda. Are they 'eck ya daft dick. No more than Asda with it's Polish section. They tend to be visited by all and sundry (including me on a regular basis). The quality is great and collectively around a wopping 40% cheaper than the majors. Sainsburys - too expensive, can't believe the one in Darwen does so well. Waitrose - went to one in Stroud by mistake, BIG mistake.Only bought a few items and was lucky to get any change from a tenner. Give me the Germans anyday, no wonder they stock Polish products, (it's the least they could do ) Incidentally, did you know the Tesco on Hill Street has it's own Halal butchers in store, with it's own dedicated counter ? Awful.
Guest Norbert Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Aldi/Lidl are great. The chocolate is better and there are brands I remember from childhood.

Poles fishing are now the regular feature..... and they dont chuck em back. I caught up with Benefits Street last night, episode 4. Ironically it's not necessarily been the benefits issue that has irked me. It's the whole issue of intelligence. Mark went to the food bank to get some free food. He paid a bus fare to go and they asked him a few questions. The voucher was in Becky's name (his wife) so he couldn't take any food. Are people thick? You create as much of your own luck as you possibly can. So he wasted a bust fare from what little money he has as well as time. This guy is the most unintelligent person I've ever seen. Has he been allowed to breed?

Awful. Got to agree with that. I ran out of Kellogg's Corn Flakes so I picked some up from Marks on my way home. My wife also came home with some Kelloggs that she'd bought from Aldi. Roughly the same price, the box she brought home was about 3 times as big and just as good. More power to their elbow I say.
