Amo Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 Ah, memories... Grabbi had a good game and deserved a goal.
yoda's brother Posted January 17, 2014 Author Posted January 17, 2014 what about dunny, great goal and puffing at half time.nothing new there then.
Proudtobeblue&white Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 Great times, subs, Hignett/Hughes - sun and a packed BE, Matt in his prime, Grabbi, GS's greatest mistake, Hislop....not the greatest keeper.......ahhhh memories.......
Bundesburn Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 Bittersweet viewing, but nice to watch, all the same! Thanks for posting!
Brfcrule1 Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 Tugay was an absolute maestro that day that goal into the top corner was totally sublime oh great memories.
Tyrone Shoelaces Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 Grabbi was Souness's greatest mistake ? You forgotten about Dwight. Yorke ? I know who I'd prefer in my team.
duffbear Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Grabbi was Souness's greatest mistake ? You forgotten about Dwight. Yorke ? I know who I'd prefer in my team. I remember going to game at Yorke was on the bench and Souness told him to come on, Yorke was taking his time getting his shin pads sorted and laces tied etc, and Souney went over to him and said do you want to fuc*ing come on or what!
Tyrone Shoelaces Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I remember an early season game when Yorke was here. It was a hot day but Yorke and Cole just stood about 10 yards apart up front. When the ball didn't come their way they were just stood chatting to each other. We've had some lazy players over the years but Yorke was as bad as any for me. He also made Cole a worse player. At least Grabbi tried. I thought he was a bit unlucky to be honest. What about that little reverse ball right onto Flitcrofts's head for our first goal in that West Ham game. Great bit of vision.
Proudtobeblue&white Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Thought Grabbi was a tad overpriced, not a Yorke fan at all. Whatever happened to Grabbi?
bazza Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 That video clip shows what a good player Grabbi was; better than we remember him.
Tyrone Shoelaces Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Every time I saw Grabbi in the flesh he did something good. What went wrong I don't know.
yoda's brother Posted January 18, 2014 Author Posted January 18, 2014 Every time I saw Grabbi in the flesh he did something good. What went wrong I don't know. he also had one hell of a shot on him. i used to like watching him.
Jimmy612 Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Every time I saw Grabbi in the flesh he did something good. What went wrong I don't know. He lacked pace from what I recall. You can see flashes of quality in the above video. By the way, being a relative youngster at that time I don't really remember Johnson too much. He looked decent in that video, few good crosses and excellent play for his own goal. Was he any good?
Steve Kean's Hypnotoad Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Grabbi was Souness's greatest mistake ? You forgotten about Dwight. Yorke ? I know who I'd prefer in my team. You'd prefer Grabbi to Yorke? Yorke scored 19 goals for us and was pretty much an ever present in Souness' best team, the one that finished 6th in 02/03. He looked lazy and was a shadow of the Yorke at United but he was still bloody good and a hundred times better than Grabbi, I remember a beautiful finish from Yorke at Highbury against a phenomenal Arsenal side to win the game 2-1.
Tyrone Shoelaces Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Yorke didn't just look lazy, he was lazy. I liked Jonno, he was a grafter with a fair bit of skill and pace. He'd walk into this team we have now in about five different positions.
Steve Kean's Hypnotoad Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 If he was that lazy then how did we finish 6th in his first season at Rovers, carry him all season? And how did he score 8 league goals and 13 in all competitions that season? Hardly a bad ratio for a classic number 10. Like McCarthy he got lazier in later seasons but (also like McCarthy) he was still made into a bit of a scapegoat in my opinion. His brilliance, even reduced by his sometimes poor work-rate, still produced an end result a hell of a lot better than Grabbi's all round garbage.
Amo Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Grabbi was a talented striker with a silky first touch and worked hard. He just didn't get the rub of the green, with that disallowed goal against United, and then the Genclerbirligi match where he did everything but score. He suffered with a crisis of confidence, and fell victim to Souey's particular brand of man-management. Here's to you, Ciccio:

His brilliance, even reduced by his sometimes poor work-rate, still produced an end result a hell of a lot better than Grabbi's all round garbage. Because he was a bloody good footballer. No one would deny Berbatov is lazy but he's still been talented enough to care a career out in the Prem. If Messi and Ronaldo were lazy they would still score bucketfulls. What makes them extra special is talent and work ethic.

Dwight Yorke .= Waste of of a nice clean shirt.
Steve Kean's Hypnotoad Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Sheesh talk about sentimental. He scores one decent header totally unmarked from a corner, has long flowing hair, and smiles a lot, and this weird cult builds up around him. The guy played for us 30 times and scored 2 goals, he was rubbish! And what did he do in his career before and after? Play for nomark Italian teams, I think I saw one or 2 of them on Steve Kean's glittering playing resume. Dwight Yorke on the other hand, one of Villa's best ever players, an integral part of Man Utd's best ever team, and part of a Rovers side that beat Arsenal and Chelsea away in a season we finished 6th. Good god, go to a football fan if you want illogical praise/criticism.
Amo Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 It's the goals he didn't score that you're not appreciating.
bazza Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 By the way, being a relative youngster at that time I don't really remember Johnson too much. He looked decent in that video, few good crosses and excellent play for his own goal. Was he any good? At that time we were lucky to have four players come through the youth team into the first team. David Dunn, Damien Duff, Damien Johnson and Martin Taylor. I liked all four of them but in ascending order of my appreciation was: 4) Taylor, a tall centre back who was reasonable but, because he had been tall all his teenage years, hadn't learnt to jump high (like Alan Wright could) 3) Damien Johnson, a neat right midfield player who did well for the team. I was disappointed when we sold him to Birmingham City. 2) David Dunn, captain of England under 21s, great midfielder. We all know about his talents. 1) Damien Duff. One of the best left wingers and one of the best players to wear the blue and white halves. According to you lot on this message board he beat Langton, Sellars, Harrison, Wilcox, Wagstaff, McLeod and others into the best ever Rovers team.
Tyrone Shoelaces Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 I'm only concerned with what Yorke did in a blue and white shirt SKH, He was @#/? poor. Not because he hadn't got ability but because he just couldn't be bothered, for me that's un-forgiveable. He even brought Andy Cole down to his level. If we were having a Rovers " wasters " team he'd be in it. Souness soon had him weighed up. John Radford was a brilliant striker for Arsenal, when he came Rovers he was crap. That''s all that matters to me. Having seen most of the left wingers in that list I can tell you that Duff was the best the I've seen at Ewood. Taylor was one of those tall players who never really learnt to jump because they never had to. Peter Crouch is a bit like that. Chris Samba wasn't the greatest at getting off the ground either. The 6 ft 3in guys that actually jump 6 ft 2". That's what made Mike England so great, he was 6 ft 3 in tall and he could really jump. I really liked Johnno but he didn't seem to get a fair crack of the whip at Rovers. He moved to the BIg Club and made a real name for himself there. Played all over the park and captained the side as well. Just what we're short of at Ewood at the moment, some bloody enthusiasm and willingness to work for the team.
