[Archived] Rovers v Derby County: 25th January 2014, 3pm KO

Do you not think that as a team we defend far too deep ? Not certain it is just the midfield that are dropping back too deep - but the defence never seems to play a high line - which always leaves a gap between our midfield and strikers.

As each match progresses, Rovers tend to defend deeper and deeper. I think it is a fatigue issue. Other than Williamson, it is clear that Crainey tires quite dramatically in the last third of matches. This in turns leads to the forwards either being isolated or they drop deeper looking for the ball.

With the exception of the Birmingham game where Bowyer took these players off we have finished games hanging on.

Anyone else think some of the darwen end singing 'Marshall give us a wave' when he's led head in hands with a potential season ending injury was a bit poor form?

Yes, Tom. I agree. I thought exactly the same and even said to the lad next to me "Give us a wave? Are they taking the @#/??"

A chant of 'There's only one Ben Marshall' would've been much more appropriate as a show of appreciation & support.

From my point of view we'll badly miss him over the next few months and I wish the lad all the best & a speedy recovery.

Thought that was really stupid. Some sections of our support are so clueless it's actually hard to believe it although it was nice to see some of them boo and abuse the Derby fans as hardly any of them applauded a player being stretchered off as he was wheeled in front of them, tossers !

It certainly struck me as rather gauche at the time. Then I started to hope that the injury was not as bad as I was assuming....

I think you are overreacting. The fans were at least singing his name in the Darwen End which is more than the rest of the ground.

Talking about stupid chants how about ' where were you when you were kean ' to the Man City fans last week ?

Of course they could have answered ' selling-out Maine road ' when they were in the 3rd division !

That would never catch on,

They did lose a fair percentage of support for a while, like Manu did when they got relegated

They had to reduce the capacity to 31,000 for safety reasons, but every time I looked at the results they

seemed to have sold-out.

My point was it was a very stupid thing sing it to City fans, they're a very loyal bunch !

I remember going to Maine Road a few times in the late 80's and the crowds were around the 20k mark including 2 or 3 thousand of us. Strange how their crowds rocketed in the 3rd div though lol fair play to em.

Aye i remember they always seemed to be at odds with someone. Think that Swales or whatever he was called wasn't too popular with their masses. Mind you a trip to Maine Road was always an 'experience' at the best of times :)

Yeah, City always ' cocked it up ' in the boardroom, even that great team of the late 60s was nearly undermined I believe.

As for the area around the ground, you would'nt want to be wandering, I'm told the local taxis did a roaring trade, overcharging the

'cockneys and scousers' so they got back to Piccadilly in one piece, many of the taxis weren't licenced either.

I was in the Darwen End and it was the 'television corner' that chanted that. As you've said in another comment they did also sing 'one ben marshall'.

I thought at first that it was a bit of a stupid chant, but on reflection it's not really is it. If you were playing football at Sunday League and broke your leg and were on the stretcher being taken away, and your mates sung that (as mates would) you would probably raise a smile and a little wave. That's exactly what Marshall did, gave a little wave as they took him off. Nothing malicious and he did acknowledge them. Wasn't a life and death situation or anything. Perhaps if someone had done that to Muamba then quite rightly raise an eyebrow.

Blimey.. Now I am just grateful Muamba didn't collapse at the Darwen End!
