the loan window open tomorrow. I think if players are signed on loan by 12pm then they can play in the Boro game just like we did when we signed David Jones last season on the Saturday Morning before the Peterborough home game

Tom, I said we need a back up striker and centre back in this loan window if we can sign the right player. Mani has said on this messageboard that Bowyer wants a back up striker in with experience. Varney fit the type of striker Bowyer seems to want plus he on low cost loan signing. plus Varney is out of contract in the summer.

Alan Nixon has said tonight on twitter that Luke Varney was at Rovers training ground at Brockhall today.

I defo cannot see Rovers bringing in another keeper when we have already got 3 keepers on the wage bill. Robinson is fit and playing well

So we're not going for Varney then!!

Is he any good ?

He is a decent player but I see him primarily as cover for Rhodes and Gestede. He has a strong work ethic and he can play off a target man. He is slightly different to what we have which is always a good thing.

To be fair to him though DJ Campbell did even better that season in the premier league for Blackpool scoring 13 goals to Varney's 5.

That may be true but you don't know about other things like attitude, influence on youngsters, work ethic, impact when coming on as a sub and a lot of other intangible stuff like that. It's presumably something like that hat bowyer is seeing if carney comes in.

Ok so iv just had a little catch up on here...

Chaddy you're right about Rodellega being far too expensive but his wages are actually up more around the £70k per week mark (omg).

Arbitro - good work on the Varney to Rovers bit. It's those snippets which we all appreciate. If you lot are anything like me I sit worrying about our lack of strikers quite a bit.

The longer the defender thing drags after Saturday the less likely it is to be Lucas Neill. They've had a good chance to look at him so I guess they may have others in the melting pot..

One thing is for sure...we won't be getting any Premier League players in unless were a) paying them a fraction of their actual wages and B) they're willing to come and sit on our bench....so not likely..

Iv said many times that I am not a proper ITK I'm just a fan who mixes in circles with lads who happen to have strong links to Rovers..bit sometimes it amazes me how little some of our fans actually listen and digest what is going on...these household premier league names keep popping up as potential replacements but let me ask you a question..Has GB signed one of these types of players yet? No he hasn't because he prefers young, hungry, ambitious players who can be motivated because they have a point to prove and they're cheap!!

My suggestion is stay up an hour later and watch the football league show..this is the pool of players that our budget can sustain.

I also think it's exactly the right approach. Look how signing experienced premier league players went last season, look how much it cost us. If we'd never signed Murphy, Etuhu and Best we would be absolutely no worse off as a team but financially probably £15-£20 million better off.

I just wonder if he will recall o'connell if there is an injury. He may be happy to not have a sub CB on the bench in the knowledge that Lowe can play there if needed. Who knows, Lowe may have been playing there in training now we are looking like having Evans back available.

Dont forget Ricky that Jason is pretty poor at heading the ball so what happens when the crosses come in if hes playing centre half ?

The same thing that happened with the Dann/Hanley partnership - the opposition score.

A common theme for me would be Hanley loses his man and leaves him to the fullback

Mani - Hugo was only a flippant suggestion due to his tears the other night, I could see his wages being subsidised and being back at Wigan though

I like the approach GB takes although not sure Varney fits in to that normal approach

I would have liked to see us have a look at one of the Murphy twins from Norwich on loan as an alternative option down the flank, both quick and one scored a cracker against our under 21s, the worse one is off to Swindon on loan so maybe not ready for this level yet

To be fair every signing is going to be a risk

Bang on. Signings start with good intentions until either weak kness / ankles etc or even weaker intelleyts enter the equation.... Hence why 12 month evergreen contracts are the way forward imo. It's horrifying to try and reckon up what long contracts have cost this club over the years.

Cant say im thrilled either, he does work hard, but does most of his best work out on the wing, which isnt a strikers role. Seems strange to let Campbell go, still have Best then go and sign Varney on a "emergency" loan.

Don't know a lot about Varney but often away from home you need to defend from the front with a striker doing the donkey work and constantly closing down and pressing. Particularly when you play with 2 defensive mids and sit off as we mostly seem to do. Maybe Varney fits this as he's known as a hardworking player.

Very few of our signings haven't been strange for one thing or another !

In fairness Bowyer has made some very poor signings but the ones he's got right have been superb and all of them low cost

If we can't get rid of best though id rather we somehow sorted that situation and used him instead of paying someone else

Time for Chaddy to say best will never play again - I get that but still think there are ways and means
