And there's the bottom line to all of our troubles Al. Venky's, Kean etc would all have succeeded if we had kept hold of our better players.

We started slumping quite literally as soon as Kean took over so I don't buy that. They would have succeeded if they kept Allardyce on as manager, as soon as they replaced him with Kean we were sunk.

Nah DE. Kean started falling out with players from day one. Samba in particular followed by EHD. How many times have Bowyers supporters commented on the squad he inherited? How often has Kean been slated for the hoardes of players that we are still paying top dollar for?

You believe that a club can continually sell it's best players and not suffer for it if you like, but I warned a number of years ago that it would only finish in relegation. Possibly knowing what would happen makes it even harder to accept.

Absolutely! They must have known too, yet carried on in their own greedy, self interest..

This manager has signed some decent players but when I see he wants Varney I begin to despair. Completely useless. Adds nothing.

Is there a chance Varney won't happen like Feeney who has signed for Bolton.

Here's hoping.

Varney would be an underwhelming signing, wasting wage money we don't have. As others have said he adds nothing and at 31 is only going to get worse as a player who relies on strength.

Don't do it gary!

Has varney got any assists for us? I know he hasn't scored despite being put through one on one a few times?

Other than being a willing runner he hasn't offered us much but I expect he will sign.

16 youngster released - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/27443271

Including Edwards, Cotton and Payne, all of whom I thought were tipped for big(ish) things.

Edit- this may be old news, I've been away and only just noticed it.

Sadly, I think our Academy is spiralling down faster than the Raos' bank balance.

Once admired, I believe there is now a paucity of talent.

IMV, we've seen a dumbing down in talent of the club's key operators (scouts, coaches etc) since the V's bought the Rovers.

Very few academies are producing talent, hence the reason for so many foreigners players in England. Maybe British coaches just aren't good enough, hence the large number of foreigners in charge of English teams.........

I do remember last time we were relegated some comment how difficult it was to attract the better youngsters. Also - they warned that it would take a few years back in the top flight to recover.

Is that a guess or is it based on tangible evidence?

Genuien question because I don't pay much attention to the Youth setup really. It seems we have taken a few kids on whilst Bowyer has been at the helm. Plus given his strong background in youth development I would have thought that he would have wanted to continue that.

Not doom mongering by any chance are you Mercer? It wouldn't be like you ;)

If Bowyer produced the players we have sold or brought through in the last decade then it is only sensible and correct to assume that his input on the academy will be miniscule now he has other bigger things on his plate. Is his replacement up to snuff? Can we afford to wait?

It seems we have promoted Bowyer to the long term detriment of the academy production and we still have major question marks over the clubs ability to get promotion under a green manager and save the club from a quarter century of financial pain. We could have (for the first time ever) done a proper professional job of recruiting Keans replacement and been looking up on both the 1st team and academy fronts

God help us if Rudy or Rhodes left or were out any length of time and we have to rely on Varney. Think it's safe to say there isn't many goals in that lad :(

Other than the 67 he's already scored at this level? Fair enough that's in 327 games - to me that only highlights why he is a good asset to the squad. Rudy and Rhodes lack experience, and neither specialise in a wing/forward role which he has.

Signings of this ilk may not be groundbreaking or exciting, but we need a squad for this level. It's ok pointing out other freebies who are potentially better but if the guy who is paid to make these decisions (and has a record, albeit short, of finding good players) likes what he sees, then that's enough for me.

It's hardly going to be the kind if catastrophic "Leon Best esq" signing- on mega money with a lousy attitude and injury record...

Signings are never simply black and white, good or bad. There are more things to take into account. Varney will do as 3rd striker for me.
