Not been widely reported in places but the National League sides are putting out near second strings in this competition.

I had hoped Joe Boggan might break through into the U23s this campaign. Hopefully, he’ll steer clear of injury and revolving door non-league loans and get a run of games somewhere beyond u18s.

Rovers U21s are away to Derby this evening, Tyjon is apparently one of several who are injured

score/update

Tyjon seems to get a lot of injuries for a 16 year old. Bit of a concern. Although getting them now may keep the big clubs off him for long enough to sign a proper pro deal here. Just hope he doesn't go the way of say, Gilsenan, who I think had injury issues at a similar age and never seems to stay fit for more than a couple months.

Interested to hear how Mafoumbi does tonight, wondering if he's anywhere near to being first team

He got subbed off, as did Doherty. Not sure when. Score currently still 0-0 with about 5 minutes left.

Just for clarity are you watching and they're both underperforming you've not noticed them? Or just tracking online

No that's why I don't know when they were subbed off. Just looking at the info on Google.

Ended 0-0.

Tonight's under 21 match against QPR at Leyland is off due to a 'waterlogged pitch'. I thought we had seen quite a lot of dry weather this week, certainly not enough for a postponement. Or could it be off because the first team are also playing tonight and it's all hands to the pump.

Who is Frank Vare? First time I've noticed the name was on the bench against PNE. Another 16 year old, attacking mid apparently...promising?

(Incidentally I believe the manager said we had three 16 year olds on the bench, but we appear to have had two, him and Dunn...next youngest was 18 year old Atcheson)

Vare is 17, Atcheson 18, Dunn 16, think Eustace was just exaggerating for effect (a "get me some players" plea)

Vare has only played 2 games at U21 level,  totalling little over 100 minutes, and didn't stand out as being first team ready when I saw him in the National League Cup game.  so seemed a strange choice to make the first team bench (especially in the absence of any strikers), unless he was just being rewarded for a good week and he was never going to get off the bench anyway?

Dennis,  Woodrow and Ribeiro all starting for the under 21's tonight.

From this, I assume they're all going to be on the bench this weekend, and that Kargbo is in line to start.

Wednesday night to Sunday lunchtime is plenty long enough a gap for me for them to start both. Especially given they haven\'t been playing recently. They might not be ready or the manager might choose not to start them but I would be inclined to think at least one will start on Sunday.

I thought that too but I have been told they are only playing for the first half tonight. It doesn't make much sense to me that we may be making an unenforced triple change at half time in a game where, if we win we can progress in the competition. We don't want a situation where a couple of injuries in the second half might scupper our chances.

Can we watch the game anywhere?

The previous ones in this competition have all been broadcast free on Rovers YouTube channel.  Albeit the WIFI at Accrington's ground does seem a bit iffy, so the quality of the stream is up and down.

Will post a link to a stream if/when one pops up

I was going off Eustace's general reticence to throw people in quickly, as shown by Kargbo getting about 9 minutes last night, rather than my own view, and the fact some of these lads haven't had much game time. But I also had it in my head the game was on Saturday. In that case, I'll predict he will start one, possibly two, if they look fit enough in the Bilbao game.

I'm going to guess it will be just Ribeiro starting. Beck needs a rest, and Ribeiro has played the most football recently. Woodrow might start at a push, he has played a little bit recently but far less minutes and exclusively as a sub. He's also a bit older at 30. I very much doubt Dennis will start, as he hasn't played even at youth level since April apparently.

Huh, ok, that may change the dynamic too. Still, I really don't expect Dennis to start on Sunday, it will be a big surprise to me if he does given how long since he played any kind of football outside of training.

Good old Notts Forest taking care of their players like their manager indignantly said that time...

Oh and I don't think Rovers are as bothered about progression in this competition as they are with blooding the new signings in a way they deem best. Personally I'd probably keep Dennis on for about 60, as like I said it would be a big surprise if he starts Sunday so he needs some minutes in his legs, unless they don't think he's up to more than 45.

score/update if there is no stream or twitter update

I'm assuming a 4-3-3 with Dennis wide left, but A.Doherty has played both sides this season, so you could maybe switch them around

                                   Barrett

R.Dohorty     Litherland      Atcheson      Ribeiro

O;Grady-Macken  Montgomery  Edmondson

A.Doherty              Woodrow            Dennis
