When you think back to the old Youth Cup winning team. We got 5 years out of Fred Pickering, 7 years out of Mike England and 10 years out of Keith Newton before they all got lured away. We’d have been lucky to get a first team game out of them today. Edited April 4 by Tyrone Shoelaces 2 Quote

The rules need to be addressed somehow. Smaller clubs are getting absolutely ransacked. Theres got to a be a win-win found for the clubs and the players. I dont think its unreasonable for young players to be treated like senior players if they are designated as a senior prospect and compensated to a certain level, with rules around the club losing this protection if they dont get a certain number of minutes in the league for the club or something. 6 Quote
joey_big_nose Posted April 4 Posted April 4 Would help talent development too as creates a big incentive for teams lower down the pyramid to play youth. 1 Quote
KentExile Posted April 4 Posted April 4 (edited) Assuming he does leave, Boggan at least had the decency to sign a pro deal with us last year so Rovers will get something for him. Which given he only joined Rovers a couple of years previously, leaves him in some credit, and is a much better approach to take than that of Finneran, who decided to sod off as soon as possible despite having been with Rovers since he was 7 or 8 Edited April 4 by KentExile 4 Quote
chaddyrovers Posted April 4 Posted April 4 JDT promoted a number of young players into squad in his first season. Players like Ash Phillips, Adam Wharton, Jake Garrett and Jack Vale. So they should be no problem in us bringing through our own players and developing there if the talent is there Who is ready to be part of the first team squad next season? Probably not many tbh. Duru, Tyjon and Michalski(as third choice). After that, not many but I haven't watched the under 21's this season. Isn't James Edmondson, Max Davies and Tom Atcheson highly rated? Best people are @arbitroand @Parsonblueas I think they are regularregularly under 21's watchers. Quote

Which is why the plan to develop youth and sell them on can't work under the current structure. You're left with the Travis / JRC / S. Wharton / Buckley level players. Decent Championship players, once they've developed (usually at 22+) but not worth a whole lot of money. Any one with PL talent is snaffled up for a minimal fee before they can play for you. It's absurd. 3 Quote

Doherty has also been playing full back for the u21s, so a good shout as cover on the bench as we only have JRC for right back currently Edit - maybe they were just held back from travelling to Southampton in case they were needed if Rovers picked up late injuries? If not that then very strange Edited April 4 by KentExile 1 Quote

Turned out none of them were. Montgomery was, so clearly been recalled to sit our bench (and probably not play). Bit of a strange one. Also weird, slight side note here, that we only made 2 subs in the first team game tonight. I'm not sure what he saw where he thought 'yes this is going swimmingly'. I'd have rather at least had a few minutes to see one of the youngsters near the end when the game was clearly gone. 3 Quote

We also said that putting Montgomery on would have been a no lose situation for him. The game was gone, Travis and Buckley were awful and we desperately needed an attacking midfielder which is what he is. It made no sense but then very little has recently. 3 Quote
simongarnerisgod Posted April 5 Posted April 5 cannot understad the recall for montgomery,my mate was at chorley last week and he said "good player, above the level at chorley but no way is he ready for championship football yet" no point in recalling him, leaving him at chorley would have more benificial to him, might be a low level but you don`t half get tested physically, lad would certainly learn how to look after himself 3 Quote
